As we meet Effie and her two Aunts, as they meet through unfortunate circumstances and are instantly put into a new family dynamic. Where the resident senior citizen witches are enjoying their routine life, they are overnight made into guardians for a young girl that is only roughly related to them. We begin to understand both sides of the story, as we see the situation from both viewpoints. Effie begins to deal with her loss, the challenges that await her in both a new home, school and environment. Thankfully, there are children her age that take a shine to her and almost instantly they become friends. As they all share the same interests, its not long before what was once a quiet house is soon filled with laughter again.<\/span><\/p>\n Once the initial secret has been exposed, there are a number of other surprises waiting for Effie in her new home. From a popstar in her kitchen, to the dedication and science behind creating new potions and even some magical talent that has made it down through generations of her family tree. This story not only tackles some sad subjects such as loss, but also the anxiety of having to adjust to a new life without any familiarities. It\u2019s a book well worth spending your time reading, with beautiful illustrations and great storytelling. I doubt it will be the last we hear of Effie\u2019s character, as I hope to see a second book joining this series next year.<\/span><\/p>\n The story and illustrations were created by Sophie Escabasse, a French author and illustrator living in Montreal. She has done illustrations for many books in her career, including Florence Parry Heide and Roxanne Heide Pierce\u2019s Spotlight Club Mysteries series (Albert Whitman); and the Freestyler Funnies series by Tom Easton (Hachette UK). With his talents having been acknowledged by members of the Royal family, Sherlock has been tasked to deal with a very important and private matter, before some dreadfully embarrassing photos get leaked to the public. This is where the iconic character of Irene Adler gets introduced, but there is a twist to this story. As Ms Adler is portrayed as a very professional dominatrix, whose clients are all members of High Society - some are even members of the Royal family. Now Holmes must do all he can to persuade Ms Adler to hand over the very sensitive photographs that would ultimately ruin the image of the Royal Family for good.<\/span>\n\nIt has been quite some time since I've reviewed a Sherlock Holmes graphic novel. The last one being 'A Study in Pink' back in 2017 from what I recall. 'A Study in Belgravia' is another graphic novel adaption of the hit TV series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the lead detective. Having already seen the series, I know what direction this book was already going to take, but nonetheless it was still a very enjoyable read.<\/span>\n\n Dewdrop, is a caring and loveable little sea creature who loves cheerleading. She lives in a pond with her friends - there is a weightlifting turtle, a musical newt and three minnows who love to cook. They are all getting ready to showcase their talents at the up-coming sports festival, but all of Dewdrops\u2019 friends are getting really nervous about the big day. Can Dewdrop help put their worries at ease in time for the big day?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\r\n Well this is a sweet little story, with colorful illustrations and adorable characters that I am sure all fans of Katie O\u2019Neill will find some enjoyment in. This story is targeted at the 4 to 8 year old age group (despite what it says on Amazon), as it can be easily enjoyed by the younger audience. The illustrations alone would be enough to entice them, but the short story will hold their attention. We meet Dewdrop, an endangered amphibian in todays\u2019 world, but a cheerful creature in this book, who loves doing cheerleading routines. As the Annual Sports Day gets closer, each of Dewdrops\u2019 friends begin to get frustrated and upset about showcasing each of their talents. Dewdrop appears to have no worries of his\/her own, and so embarks on checking on and helping each one of their friends\u2019. A sentiment that is more important now than ever. This story is perfect to teach any young child this lifelong lesson.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The main character Dewdrop, is actually based on a very interesting looking animal. Although alien looking at first glance, Dewdrop takes her resemblance from an Axolotl. Also known as a Mexican Walking Fish, this animal is also used as inspiration for the Pok\u00e9mon Wooper. Its cute and simplistic design would attract anyones attention to this book on shop shelves. Growing up, I only encountered the usual sea creatures such as whales, sharks, dolphins and octopuses in my children's books. Nowadays, we see more stories using characters such as pufferfish, newts and even an axolotl here. Animals, that although are unusual at first, spark many questions from young children as to what other kinds of creatures live in the ponds and oceans. This book could easily start an inquisitive journey into young readers doing their own research, and that is probably the most positive outcome one could hope for from any book. A child setting off down their own path to understand and research the World around them.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The creator of this book is New Zealand born author and illustrator Katie O\u2019Neill, who is also an Eisner award winning author. This award is given to people that have been nominated for their talents and creative achievement in the comic book industry. Ms O\u2019Neill was nominated for this prize just last year for \u2018Aquicorn Cove\u2019. She also won the award twice back in 2018 for her book \u2018The Tea Dragon Society\u2019, which won both the Best Webcomic & Best Publication for Kids for ages 9-12 categories. We have experienced what a Tea Dragon Society is like, now we venture into a Festival. Although this particular book is known as a Companion Story to The Tea Dragon Society<\/em>, I see it more as a prequel. As we meet both Erik and Hesekiel once more, but in the prime of their youth. Having traveled together for some time, they journey back to Erik\u2019s village in the mountains where we meet his niece Rinn, the heroine of our story. Although these two familiar faces manage to take more of a backseat in this story, they play their part near the end of the adventure. Ultimately this tale is about Rinn and the village's Dragon Guardian Aedhan, as he begins his duties much later than expected.<\/span>\r\n\r\n Henrietta is a 15 year old orphan, who has just been whisked away from her orphanage by an unknown stranger and is on her way to her new home in a town called Malrenard. Once she arrives in the mysterious looking town, she is bombarded with requests\/orders from the Mayor, regarding both her deceased Uncle, whom she had no prior knowledge of nor had she ever met him. Now she has inherited the house of the great War hero - Ornun Zol! Problem is this immense house is like a maze. Not only are there mysteries behind every corner, but also some bandits and Kingsmen creating their own warzone inside her front door.<\/em> <\/span><\/p>\r\n This story is full of adventure and is perfect for those that enjoy role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, as the creators do. They have taken their lifelong friendship, hobbies and talents together to create this wondrous story. We follow the story of Henrietta, who after losing both of her parents during the Great War, has spent the last 9 years in an orphanage. Tracked down and whisked away to a mysterious town after the death of a relative, whom she had never known. An Uncle, known as a Wizard and the one to have magically ended the Great War - Ornun Zol. Now Henrietta has been left with the responsibility over looking after and resolving the damage that this house has caused. From uncontrolled curses flying out of windows, monsters escaping into the neighbouring woods and giant rats causing chaos in the town. Add to that, numerous bandits and Kingsmen now fighting amongst themselves in her new home, with no intention of leaving anytime soon! Henrietta has just been dumped in the middle of a warzone yet again.<\/span><\/p>\r\n A quiet child, who has suffered so much in her young life, from being in the middle of a warzone, the death of her parents, suffering trauma after trauma. Now she is escorted to a town in the middle of nowhere, where the townspeople expect her to take the responsibility for all the damage that has been done to them, by her Uncle\u2019s house. A building of immeasurable height, with many different weather patterns and environments inside, frightening creatures, magical statues and dangerous, yet convenient transport systems that can take you around the house in a horrifying instant. Henrietta is not alone in this house however, as she walks into a warzone between two groups of people that have trespassed into her new home, in search of the weapon which ended the Great War. Through-out this issue we begin to see the true Henrietta, from when we first met her as a terrified child, to a quiet adolescent and then to a young woman who stands against all the madness! I can not wait to see how her character develops in the next book!<\/span><\/p>\r\n Soon after the \u2018mysterious\u2019 death of her Uncle Ornun, his home was invaded by a band of thieves looking to find the \u2018Vault\u2019 which holds the all powerful and unseen weapon, which ended the Great War. These thieves and their plan were known by the King, so he sent some of his men to capture them. Thus this struggle for the weapon began, as for how long both parties have been engaged in battle in this house, I don\u2019t know but I would be interested to find out. However the big question at the moment resides with, why has this cat been following Henrietta around? And why are there massive claw marks appearing on items near Henrietta lately? There is far more going on in this series, than just this crazy ass house. Between the house, the War, the Vault, Cat and late Uncle - just what part will Henrietta have to play in this story?<\/span><\/p>\r\n As I said before, both creators are fans of role playing games and have incorporated it into this story. With every room being an adventure of its own. You can even spot a pair of D20 dice in amongst Ornuns\u2019 belongings. One bottle in the bathroom is also labelled \u2018Tears of the Kraken\u2019, which you could connect to a monster that is found in the D&D Tabletop RPG.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The artwork and story go hand in hand, each complimenting the other. This could well have been a difficult story to adapt, as there are so many elements involved, with new stories that could be expanded upon in every corner. In fact the author Haiko Ho\u0308rnig spent his childhood in his parents\u2019 comic book store, \u2018Comicothek\u2019 in Germany, where he developed a love for sequential art at an early age. In Middle School he met his best friend Marius Pawlitza, the artist for this series and fellow RPG enthusiast. Over the years they not only developed a love for Tabletop games, but also worked together to create their own comics.<\/span><\/p>\r\n The artwork in this series has enhanced the role playing experience the duo wished to get across to the readers, without a doubt! Having designed each room to be unlike any other which you think you would find in the house. This story is far from ordinary and boring, the artwork certainly makes sure of that. It was a joy to read and is one that I think is worth re-reading numerous times again in the future. It may even give you some ideas for some D&D campaigns to develop.<\/span><\/p>\r\n This is only the beginning of what is to be a four part adventure for Henrietta in \u201cA House Divided: The Accursed Inheritance of Henrietta Achilles\u201d<\/em>. \n\nWith Sherlock's reputation now being published in all the newspapers and even Watsons online blog. It's no wonder that his client list has now reached wider circles. Following his encounters with Moriarty, Sherlock needs another opponent that is skilled enough to keep him on his toes. Thus we have Ms Irene Adler, her first meeting with Sherlock is indeed startling to see the least and she is bolder than what I would have imagined prior to watching the show. She indeed has the skill to go toe to toe with the Detective, and can easily unarm any other individual that comes her way. However Ms Adler still manages to get into some serious trouble, as her life is now on the line when intruders decide to attack her home at the same time Sherlock and Watson are visiting.<\/span>\n\nMs Adlers character is not only bold, but she has a brilliant mind. Although she is adaptable and appears to be in control of practically any room, her curiosity gets the better of her at times. Especially in regards to Holmes and his cases. The sort of relationship the two begin to share, leaves a black mark on Sherlock when he receives some devastating news during Christmas. For fans however it does leave a spark of hope, that Benedict Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock, may in fact have a love interest down the line. \n\nWhether you have seen the TV show adaptation or not, but have a good idea of what the infamous story of Sherlock Holmes involves - then I think you would enjoy this graphic novel release. \r\n\r\nOne of the main themes of this book seems to be how a shy, recluse teenager is forced to adapt to their new surroundings. Almost like how a student from a public school, is whisked away to a boarding school. Quickly thrown into the fire, Tara learns much more about herself from strangers than what she understood to be true her entire life. This girl must learn to accept the truth, come to terms with who and what she is, as well as her people's history. She isn\u2019t the only character that must do this though, her case isn\u2019t as rare as you would think either as a fellow room mate has a similar-ish story. There is also a lovely lesson in this story, apart from being true to yourself. \u2018Don\u2019t judge people based on their appearance\u2019. That statement is imperative to this story.<\/span>\r\n\r\nSo we have several \u2018heated\u2019 moments in this book, with emotional breakdowns, some harsh truths, tough choices, incredibly bad decisions and a good deal of apologizing. I don\u2019t want to give away any more detail, as half the enjoyment of this book is the surprise. As you can tell from the title and cover though, its\u2019 no secret that there are aliens involved of all shapes and species. So take your time reading this book and tell me in the comments section below or on our social media - how many different alien species did you spot. The one that stood out for me and you can spot it on the cover - is the humanoid cat. All I can picture is that they might be related to Goose, the cat looking creature known as a Flerken from Captain Marvel. Now that would be a twist! As well as the usual teenage, high spirited drama. There are breaches in Galactic protocol, some Alien child traffickers, a secret U.S government department to deal with all of this and then the usual school assignments for history class. \r\n\r\nSchool for Extraterrestrial Girls Volume 1: Girl on Fire<\/em>\u00a0is the first original graphic novel release from author Jeremy Whitley. His previous work includes \u2018Princeless\u2019<\/em>, several issues of \u2018Courage The Cowardly Dog\u2019<\/em>, Marvels \u2018The Unstoppable Wasp\u2019<\/em>, and \u2018My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic\u2019<\/em>. The illustrations were handled by Jamie Noguchi, who has worked with numerous companies including UDON, Marvel, Dark Horse Comics and Image. He also did the illustrations for the series Erfworld<\/em> - which was among the Top 10 Graphic Novels of 2007 according to Times Magazine<\/em>. The background artwork in this volume however has been lacking, but the character designs - well that is where Jamie\u2019s imagination went wild. \r\n\r\nThroughout this book we discover how unique this World is, where Tea Dragons, Celestial Dragons and other civilized animal humanoids live together. This World isn\u2019t without it\u2019s dangers though, as we see later on. It is a charming Universe nonetheless and I can fully understand why it has gotten so much love. Full credit has to go to Katie, for this wonderful franchise she has brought to live.<\/span>\r\n\r\nNow back to the story at hand, much like the first book we meet yet another young female character that is struggling with their future career. Rinn is training to be a cook, unfortunately it doesn\u2019t seem to come naturally for the girl and through the new Guardians help - she accepts the talents she does have and decides to focus on her strengths. Now the Guardian - Aedhan, he has not had an easy go of it. Having only arrived at the village and his new Shrine home, he comes under an enchanted sleep and doesn\u2019t awake until 80 years later when Rinn & her Tea Dragon come upon the forgotten shrine. Aedhan is forced to come to terms with the situation and the loss of nearly an entire century to sleep. Having not been able to carry out his duties as Guardian, he has missed out on some very important moments in the village's history, from celebrations, to births and even deaths. Eager to make up for lost time. He throws himself forward at every opportunity to help the village - and of course, Rinn.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAs well as this being an LGBTQ friendly book, as we already know the obvious relationship that Erik and Hesekiel have in the previous book - The Tea Dragon Society<\/em>. We see the early days of their relationship and an important conversation between them, where they begin planning ahead for their future retirement - in a tea shop. Another moment I want to focus on is between Rinn and Aedhan, as they have a quiet conversation between themselves up in the mountains. The topic Rinn approached Aedhan with was about a dragons\u2019 ability to change between genders and if it was possible. His answer seems to have been an important one for Rinn, as she seems to be deeply thinking about it in regards to herself. \r\n\r\nLana is a strong little girl, who has been through some hard times from the death of a parent, to moving away from her hometown. Lana even admits to herself that she never reached out for help from her father, and just learned to deal with it all herself. All boiling down to the grief she still holds for her mother and acknowledging how much she needs her Aunt in her life. These are important issues she faces, highlighting the fact that it is also important to reach out to others as you do not have to go through such hard times on your own. A lesson I hope all readers, young or old, get from this book. Lana goes through some exceptional character growth in this story because of her realization.<\/span>\r\n\r\nWe also meet Auntie Mae, a woman born to live by the sea and is a dependable pillar in the community, who usually supplies the town with fresh fish daily. After receiving a necklace she once lost years ago, we discover just how Mae became close to the leader of the Aquicorns. Without putting any labels on the relationship in the book, Mae and the Aquicorn Queen Aure grow incredibly close. However their opinions on the rapid decay of the coral reef and what is to blame for it, tear them apart for several years. It is only with the interaction of Lana do we see a positive outcome for those living above and below the sea.<\/span>\r\n\r\nAs well as being a story that highlights both a childs\u2019 sense of loss and isolation, it is more of an environmental story. Focussing on the negative effects of using plastic nets and over fishing, which in turn has a massive impact on the health of coral reefs. These reefs act as a natural barrier against storms and rough seas, by taking the brunt of the impact before it hits land. There is plenty more valuable information provided at the end of the story, with information links given for reputable sources including the Coral Reef Conservation Alliance<\/em> and the UN Environment<\/em> website.
