Effie has just lost her Mom and now stands in the home of her estranged Aunt, a woman whom she has never known. Now left in her Aunt's care, Effie is suddenly forced to adjust her whole life as not only to being an orphan but also to her new surroundings. As her Aunts try their best to comfort her and also learn to adjust to their new and much younger houseguest, they are also trying to juggle keeping their other job a secret. Effie’s Aunt and her partner are both Witches! The good kind of course, who use their knowledge to help people and also lift curses from World renowned popstars. An exciting adventure awaits, as Effie begins to develop her own magical talents.

"witchesofbrooklyn1"

What began as a story of immense loss and sadness, a complete life unheavful and total uncertainty of what tomorrow will bring - was instead turned into quite an uplifting read. As we meet Effie and her two Aunts, as they meet through unfortunate circumstances and are instantly put into a new family dynamic. Where the resident senior citizen witches are enjoying their routine life, they are overnight made into guardians for a young girl that is only roughly related to them. We begin to understand both sides of the story, as we see the situation from both viewpoints. Effie begins to deal with her loss, the challenges that await her in both a new home, school and environment. Thankfully, there are children her age that take a shine to her and almost instantly they become friends. As they all share the same interests, its not long before what was once a quiet house is soon filled with laughter again.

Once the initial secret has been exposed, there are a number of other surprises waiting for Effie in her new home. From a popstar in her kitchen, to the dedication and science behind creating new potions and even some magical talent that has made it down through generations of her family tree. This story not only tackles some sad subjects such as loss, but also the anxiety of having to adjust to a new life without any familiarities. It’s a book well worth spending your time reading, with beautiful illustrations and great storytelling. I doubt it will be the last we hear of Effie’s character, as I hope to see a second book joining this series next year.

The story and illustrations were created by Sophie Escabasse, a French author and illustrator living in Montreal. She has done illustrations for many books in her career, including Florence Parry Heide and Roxanne Heide Pierce’s Spotlight Club Mysteries series (Albert Whitman); and the Freestyler Funnies series by Tom Easton (Hachette UK). This book, “Witches of Brooklyn” appears to be her first solo debut and I am sure it will be a success.

With his talents having been acknowledged by members of the Royal family, Sherlock has been tasked to deal with a very important and private matter, before some dreadfully embarrassing photos get leaked to the public. This is where the iconic character of Irene Adler gets introduced, but there is a twist to this story. As Ms Adler is portrayed as a very professional dominatrix, whose clients are all members of High Society - some are even members of the Royal family. Now Holmes must do all he can to persuade Ms Adler to hand over the very sensitive photographs that would ultimately ruin the image of the Royal Family for good.

It has been quite some time since I've reviewed a Sherlock Holmes graphic novel. The last one being 'A Study in Pink' back in 2017 from what I recall. 'A Study in Belgravia' is another graphic novel adaption of the hit TV series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the lead detective. Having already seen the series, I know what direction this book was already going to take, but nonetheless it was still a very enjoyable read.

"sherlockvol1_sib1"

With Sherlock's reputation now being published in all the newspapers and even Watsons online blog. It's no wonder that his client list has now reached wider circles. Following his encounters with Moriarty, Sherlock needs another opponent that is skilled enough to keep him on his toes. Thus we have Ms Irene Adler, her first meeting with Sherlock is indeed startling to see the least and she is bolder than what I would have imagined prior to watching the show. She indeed has the skill to go toe to toe with the Detective, and can easily unarm any other individual that comes her way. However Ms Adler still manages to get into some serious trouble, as her life is now on the line when intruders decide to attack her home at the same time Sherlock and Watson are visiting.

Ms Adlers character is not only bold, but she has a brilliant mind. Although she is adaptable and appears to be in control of practically any room, her curiosity gets the better of her at times. Especially in regards to Holmes and his cases. The sort of relationship the two begin to share, leaves a black mark on Sherlock when he receives some devastating news during Christmas. For fans however it does leave a spark of hope, that Benedict Cumberbatch's version of Sherlock, may in fact have a love interest down the line. What was once deemed as highly unimaginable in the first season, has just entered the realm of possibility.

"Sherlockvol1_sib2"

Whether you have seen the TV show adaptation or not, but have a good idea of what the infamous story of Sherlock Holmes involves - then I think you would enjoy this graphic novel release. Although this story takes place in what would be Season Two of the show, it would be best to start reading this series from the very beginning, so you can better understand the dynamic between Sherlock and his flatmate - Watson, as well as the very interesting brotherly love relationship between the two Holmes boys.

Once again, it is well worth checking out and is a must have in your collection if you are indeed a Sherlockian.

Overall: 7/10

A fascinating historical biography of the man who brought fame, grandeur and revolution back to the Palace of Versailles.

Henri de Nolhac grew up without a father...though his father, Pierre, was very much alive and working mere meters away from their home at the Palace of Versailles.

Once appointed to the Palace in 1887, Pierre de Nolhac dedicated his life to protecting its historical archives and restoring Versailles to its former glory: an agora of politics, art and culture. Tara has a secret that even she was unaware of. For the first time in her life, Tara wakes up late for school one morning and her life changed forever. After a series of clumsy accidents, not taking her daily medication and losing her temper for the first time - Tara ends up catching fire! Just what is happening to her body, why don’t the flames hurt her and will she ever be able to get back to living her quiet life again? Perhaps the guy in the suit will be able to explain why she just woke up in an ice box!

Now this has been an interesting read! Girl on Fire is the first book in the new School for Extraterrestrial Girls series from author Jeremy Whitley. A series that I assume will be following the new life of this volume's main character Tara, as she comes to terms with her lost identity, heritage, appearance and how she came to be on Earth. With a Universe of possibilities in front of her, the next volume looks to include another aspect of being a teenager that Tara seems to have had zero experience of so far. But I’ll leave that a secret for now, as you’ll be able to discover it for yourself when you get to the end of this book.

"School-for-Extraterrestrial-Girls_Page_1"

One of the main themes of this book seems to be how a shy, recluse teenager is forced to adapt to their new surroundings. Almost like how a student from a public school, is whisked away to a boarding school. Quickly thrown into the fire, Tara learns much more about herself from strangers than what she understood to be true her entire life. This girl must learn to accept the truth, come to terms with who and what she is, as well as her people's history. She isn’t the only character that must do this though, her case isn’t as rare as you would think either as a fellow room mate has a similar-ish story. There is also a lovely lesson in this story, apart from being true to yourself. ‘Don’t judge people based on their appearance’. That statement is imperative to this story.

So we have several ‘heated’ moments in this book, with emotional breakdowns, some harsh truths, tough choices, incredibly bad decisions and a good deal of apologizing. I don’t want to give away any more detail, as half the enjoyment of this book is the surprise. As you can tell from the title and cover though, its’ no secret that there are aliens involved of all shapes and species. So take your time reading this book and tell me in the comments section below or on our social media - how many different alien species did you spot. The one that stood out for me and you can spot it on the cover - is the humanoid cat. All I can picture is that they might be related to Goose, the cat looking creature known as a Flerken from Captain Marvel. Now that would be a twist! As well as the usual teenage, high spirited drama. There are breaches in Galactic protocol, some Alien child traffickers, a secret U.S government department to deal with all of this and then the usual school assignments for history class. I mean, what else can they put in this story!

"School-for-Extraterrestrial-Girls_Page_2"

School for Extraterrestrial Girls Volume 1: Girl on Fire is the first original graphic novel release from author Jeremy Whitley. His previous work includes ‘Princeless’, several issues of ‘Courage The Cowardly Dog’, Marvels ‘The Unstoppable Wasp’, and ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’. The illustrations were handled by Jamie Noguchi, who has worked with numerous companies including UDON, Marvel, Dark Horse Comics and Image. He also did the illustrations for the series Erfworld - which was among the Top 10 Graphic Novels of 2007 according to Times Magazine. The background artwork in this volume however has been lacking, but the character designs - well that is where Jamie’s imagination went wild. Some designs are iconic, others look somewhat familiar, but he has done a great job in taking ideas from several genres to create his own school of aliens. I’m looking forward to seeing what or who we get introduced to in the next issue.

As of right now you can start pre ordering this book over on Amazon and Book Depository. If you can, please order it through your local comic bookstore. Dewdrop, is a caring and loveable little sea creature who loves cheerleading. She lives in a pond with her friends - there is a weightlifting turtle, a musical newt and three minnows who love to cook. They are all getting ready to showcase their talents at the up-coming sports festival, but all of Dewdrops’ friends are getting really nervous about the big day. Can Dewdrop help put their worries at ease in time for the big day?

Well this is a sweet little story, with colorful illustrations and adorable characters that I am sure all fans of Katie O’Neill will find some enjoyment in. This story is targeted at the 4 to 8 year old age group (despite what it says on Amazon), as it can be easily enjoyed by the younger audience. The illustrations alone would be enough to entice them, but the short story will hold their attention. We meet Dewdrop, an endangered amphibian in todays’ world, but a cheerful creature in this book, who loves doing cheerleading routines. As the Annual Sports Day gets closer, each of Dewdrops’ friends begin to get frustrated and upset about showcasing each of their talents. Dewdrop appears to have no worries of his/her own, and so embarks on checking on and helping each one of their friends’. A sentiment that is more important now than ever. This story is perfect to teach any young child this lifelong lesson.

"drewdrop2"

The main character Dewdrop, is actually based on a very interesting looking animal. Although alien looking at first glance, Dewdrop takes her resemblance from an Axolotl. Also known as a Mexican Walking Fish, this animal is also used as inspiration for the Pokémon Wooper. Its cute and simplistic design would attract anyones attention to this book on shop shelves. Growing up, I only encountered the usual sea creatures such as whales, sharks, dolphins and octopuses in my children's books. Nowadays, we see more stories using characters such as pufferfish, newts and even an axolotl here. Animals, that although are unusual at first, spark many questions from young children as to what other kinds of creatures live in the ponds and oceans. This book could easily start an inquisitive journey into young readers doing their own research, and that is probably the most positive outcome one could hope for from any book. A child setting off down their own path to understand and research the World around them.

She has grown up caring for the Tea Dragons that live in her hometown. Whilst out foraging for plants one day, she comes across a sleeping dragon in a dilapidated house. His name is Aedhan, and unbeknownst to him, he has been in an enchanted sleep for eighty years. As luck might have it, two familiar faces arrive back in the village that can help track down the beast that caused this magical slumber, before there are any more victims.

We return once more with another Katie O’Neill book and the continuation of the Tea Dragon series. We have experienced what a Tea Dragon Society is like, now we venture into a Festival. Although this particular book is known as a Companion Story to The Tea Dragon Society, I see it more as a prequel. As we meet both Erik and Hesekiel once more, but in the prime of their youth. Having traveled together for some time, they journey back to Erik’s village in the mountains where we meet his niece Rinn, the heroine of our story. Although these two familiar faces manage to take more of a backseat in this story, they play their part near the end of the adventure. Ultimately this tale is about Rinn and the village's Dragon Guardian Aedhan, as he begins his duties much later than expected.

"teadragonfestival1"

Throughout this book we discover how unique this World is, where Tea Dragons, Celestial Dragons and other civilized animal humanoids live together. This World isn’t without it’s dangers though, as we see later on. It is a charming Universe nonetheless and I can fully understand why it has gotten so much love. Full credit has to go to Katie, for this wonderful franchise she has brought to live.

Now back to the story at hand, much like the first book we meet yet another young female character that is struggling with their future career. Rinn is training to be a cook, unfortunately it doesn’t seem to come naturally for the girl and through the new Guardians help - she accepts the talents she does have and decides to focus on her strengths. Now the Guardian - Aedhan, he has not had an easy go of it. Having only arrived at the village and his new Shrine home, he comes under an enchanted sleep and doesn’t awake until 80 years later when Rinn & her Tea Dragon come upon the forgotten shrine. Aedhan is forced to come to terms with the situation and the loss of nearly an entire century to sleep. Having not been able to carry out his duties as Guardian, he has missed out on some very important moments in the village's history, from celebrations, to births and even deaths. Eager to make up for lost time. He throws himself forward at every opportunity to help the village - and of course, Rinn.

As well as this being an LGBTQ friendly book, as we already know the obvious relationship that Erik and Hesekiel have in the previous book - The Tea Dragon Society. We see the early days of their relationship and an important conversation between them, where they begin planning ahead for their future retirement - in a tea shop. Another moment I want to focus on is between Rinn and Aedhan, as they have a quiet conversation between themselves up in the mountains. The topic Rinn approached Aedhan with was about a dragons’ ability to change between genders and if it was possible. His answer seems to have been an important one for Rinn, as she seems to be deeply thinking about it in regards to herself. Perhaps we may learn more about that particular journey for her in the next book.

"teadragonfestival2"

The creator of ‘The Tea Dragon Festival’ is New Zealand born author and illustrator - Katie O’Neill, who is also an Eisner award winning author. Infact, ‘The Tea Dragon Society’ series has also been adapted and released as a Card Game, Pin sets and Plush toys due to its popularity. All of which can be found and bought on the Oni Press website.

‘The Tea Dragon Festival’ is once again another charming and enchanting story by Katie O’Neill. With a story that focuses on many emotional challenges, relatable topics, a small insight into gender identification, as well as highlighting a community's openness to learn sign language to help include another member of the village as much as possible. Henrietta is a 15 year old orphan, who has just been whisked away from her orphanage by an unknown stranger and is on her way to her new home in a town called Malrenard. Once she arrives in the mysterious looking town, she is bombarded with requests/orders from the Mayor, regarding both her deceased Uncle, whom she had no prior knowledge of nor had she ever met him. Now she has inherited the house of the great War hero - Ornun Zol! Problem is this immense house is like a maze. Not only are there mysteries behind every corner, but also some bandits and Kingsmen creating their own warzone inside her front door.

This story is full of adventure and is perfect for those that enjoy role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, as the creators do. They have taken their lifelong friendship, hobbies and talents together to create this wondrous story. We follow the story of Henrietta, who after losing both of her parents during the Great War, has spent the last 9 years in an orphanage. Tracked down and whisked away to a mysterious town after the death of a relative, whom she had never known. An Uncle, known as a Wizard and the one to have magically ended the Great War - Ornun Zol. Now Henrietta has been left with the responsibility over looking after and resolving the damage that this house has caused. From uncontrolled curses flying out of windows, monsters escaping into the neighbouring woods and giant rats causing chaos in the town. Add to that, numerous bandits and Kingsmen now fighting amongst themselves in her new home, with no intention of leaving anytime soon! Henrietta has just been dumped in the middle of a warzone yet again.

"ahousedivided1"

A quiet child, who has suffered so much in her young life, from being in the middle of a warzone, the death of her parents, suffering trauma after trauma. Now she is escorted to a town in the middle of nowhere, where the townspeople expect her to take the responsibility for all the damage that has been done to them, by her Uncle’s house. A building of immeasurable height, with many different weather patterns and environments inside, frightening creatures, magical statues and dangerous, yet convenient transport systems that can take you around the house in a horrifying instant. Henrietta is not alone in this house however, as she walks into a warzone between two groups of people that have trespassed into her new home, in search of the weapon which ended the Great War. Through-out this issue we begin to see the true Henrietta, from when we first met her as a terrified child, to a quiet adolescent and then to a young woman who stands against all the madness! I can not wait to see how her character develops in the next book!

Soon after the ‘mysterious’ death of her Uncle Ornun, his home was invaded by a band of thieves looking to find the ‘Vault’ which holds the all powerful and unseen weapon, which ended the Great War. These thieves and their plan were known by the King, so he sent some of his men to capture them. Thus this struggle for the weapon began, as for how long both parties have been engaged in battle in this house, I don’t know but I would be interested to find out. However the big question at the moment resides with, why has this cat been following Henrietta around? And why are there massive claw marks appearing on items near Henrietta lately? There is far more going on in this series, than just this crazy ass house. Between the house, the War, the Vault, Cat and late Uncle - just what part will Henrietta have to play in this story?

As I said before, both creators are fans of role playing games and have incorporated it into this story. With every room being an adventure of its own. You can even spot a pair of D20 dice in amongst Ornuns’ belongings. One bottle in the bathroom is also labelled ‘Tears of the Kraken’, which you could connect to a monster that is found in the D&D Tabletop RPG.

"ahousedivided2"

The artwork and story go hand in hand, each complimenting the other. This could well have been a difficult story to adapt, as there are so many elements involved, with new stories that could be expanded upon in every corner. In fact the author Haiko Hörnig spent his childhood in his parents’ comic book store, ‘Comicothek’ in Germany, where he developed a love for sequential art at an early age. In Middle School he met his best friend Marius Pawlitza, the artist for this series and fellow RPG enthusiast. Over the years they not only developed a love for Tabletop games, but also worked together to create their own comics.

The artwork in this series has enhanced the role playing experience the duo wished to get across to the readers, without a doubt! Having designed each room to be unlike any other which you think you would find in the house. This story is far from ordinary and boring, the artwork certainly makes sure of that. It was a joy to read and is one that I think is worth re-reading numerous times again in the future. It may even give you some ideas for some D&D campaigns to develop.

This is only the beginning of what is to be a four part adventure for Henrietta in “A House Divided: The Accursed Inheritance of Henrietta Achilles”. You can buy it now in either hardback paperback or digital from Amazon, BookDepository or any good bookshop that will order it for you!

This story follows a young girl named Lora and her group of friends as they begin to grow up into teenagers. From days spent playing ‘make believe adventures’ and using their imagination to create new games, slowly Lora’s friend circle begins to dwindle as they each become more interested in make up, video games and finding romance. Lora on the other hand has no interest in any of these topics yet and prefers the simple things in life, like just messing around in the outdoors. Whilst reading a book on the supernatural, Lora decides to hold a séance tea party in her attic. Little did she realise that her childhood imaginary friend Alexa would reappear.

Alexa is infact a wandering ghost of a young girl that used to live in the town decades ago. As the two girls rekindle their lost friendship, they each start helping one another accept life's challenges. This is a very charming coming of age story, perfect for those aged ten and above who are starting to shy away from playing with traditional toys and games.

"seanceteaparty_1"

This is in fact the first story I have ever read by Reimena Yee and it really was delightful. With a plot that can almost instantly connect with the majority of readers, it also has the magic to bring up old memories for the older readers like myself of when they were at a similar age and going through the same challenges. This story is even more relevant in todays' society as it seems as though todays' generation of kids are getting interested in video games and pop culture at a much younger age than before. So when I first thought that this story would be ideal for those aged 12 and above, in reality we could be looking more at the 10 years old age bracket.

It is also the perfect time of year to get into a good book or series, as the winter season begins to creep in and the evenings get darker a lot earlier now. I have always enjoyed the coming of age genre of books, each of them usually has their own take on that stressful time between wanting to stay a kid forever but at the same time, wanting to be more adult. This is perhaps the first book I've read that actually involves a ghost, Alexa who helps our protagonist Lora to better understand her feelings and with just a bit of extra support is able to gather the courage to go out and try new things.

"seanceteaparty_2"

This is also a good book to perhaps read alongside your child as it does touch on a number of important subjects, like bullying, peer pressure and feeling as though they are being left behind by their friends. It is one of those stories that is there to help you create an environment for your child to be comfortable to talk openly about issues such as these.

This book was entirely created by Reimena Yee, a very talented illustrator, writer and designer originally from Kuala Lumpur but now resides in Melbourne, Australia. She is the author-illustrator of the gothic comics, "The World in Deeper Inspection", the Eisner and Mcduffie-nominated "The Carpet Merchant of Konstantiniyya", and is also the writer of "The Makers Club" series.

Ms O’Neill was nominated for this prize just last year for ‘Aquicorn Cove’. She also won the award twice back in 2018 for her book ‘The Tea Dragon Society’, which won both the Best Webcomic & Best Publication for Kids for ages 9-12 categories.

This is an all round, feel good book and one I would highly recommend!

Overall: 9/10

Written By: Haiko Hórnig

Illustrated By: Marius Pawlitza

Age Range: 12-18 years

Genre: Fiction, Science-Fiction, Fantasy

Format: Paperback, Kindle

Published By: Lerner Publishing Group

Tiến is a young boy living in America, the only child of immigrant parents from Vietnam. Having grown up in the States his entire life, his first language is English. Which unfortunately means that there is a difficult language barrier at times when he wishes to speak to his parents, as they are still trying to learn the language. In order to include them more, Tiến reads fairy tales with them every night ever since he was a little boy. The only problem is, that the one subject he wishes to talk about most isn’t found in your traditional fairy tales. So just how is Tiến going to come out to his parents?

First off, this really was an interesting story. I haven't come across many that deal with the same scenario that Tiến is living in. Born to immigrant parents, and not being fluent in the language his parents have grown up with. I can see that his parents work incredibly hard for the life they currently have, and as we see by his mothers’ actions they have been saving money for several years in order to go back to visit their families back in Vietnam. Which would act as a first meeting for Tiến and his wider family, even though he is already about twelve years old I say. In order to set their son up and give him the best start in America, they solely focussed on him having English as his first language. A difficult decision to make, as it does suggest they made a big sacrifice in regards to their identity and where they came from by not being able to pass that on to their son. The biggest barrier they face though, is this language connection and trying to find a perfect balance between both their native languages. Although his parents do try their best, they are also incredibly busy with their jobs in order to stay afloat and being able to send money back home to Vietnam to care for their ailing parents. This is a sad tale and its not completely fiction, as there are people today that still struggle with the same living standards and cultural barriers within families who have also made the dangerous journey of fleeing to another country in order to live a better life. All you have to do is look at the news.

"themagicfish_28"

Tiến seems to have some bit of understanding about the struggles his parents have gone through in order to give him the life they now have. He can see how tired his father is when he returns home from work, the odd jobs his mother has. As well as the numerous times that even just his clothes need to be mended, instead of replacing them with something new. Tiến has his own struggles as well, which include his self confidence and the guilt he feels, as he does not know how to act on his feelings towards his best guy friend. This story is also based in the 1990’s, so ideals and community values were still high and expected to be inline with what the Church thought - much like Ireland was at the time. So for Tiến to even talk about or approach anyone about his sexuality, was met with having to be reeducated and being forced to talk to the local clergyman. He not only had no support that he could reach out to, because of either a language barrier or not knowing who to trust. Combined with the sudden family tragedy, he had a lot of emotional baggage to deal with at the time. This is certainly a book worth reading, as it puts it all down to a human level and one that makes it instantaneous to connect with the characters.

"themagicfish_45"

The majority of this book is also a retelling of a fairy tale called ‘Tattercoats’, as well as versions of the Little Mermaid and Cinderella. Versions that I have not read before, but were beautifully drawn and told. They fitted in well alongside the main story, but left me wanting to read more about these children's classics by the end. Now this book isn’t entirely fiction, as it is somewhat based off of the childhood of the author. Trung Le Nguyen was born from Vietnamese Immigrants that arrived in the US. Having learnt both English and Vietnamese side by side when he was young, just like his main character they also shared the same pastime of borrowing fairy tales from the library. Which led to family discussions about the stories and eventually their language barrier developed its own balance, as they all used a hybrid of both English & Vietnamese at home. A balance which Tiến and his mother are searching for.

In order to experience this book in all its glory, you are just going to have to pick it up for yourself. As I fear I am failing to describe, just how influential this story may become for so many people. You can find the book now, in both digital and print. Even better yet, go and grab the hardback copy from your local bookstore!

We got a chance to sit with Eisner nominated writer/artist Ibrahim Moustafa to talk about his upcoming graphic novel Count from Humanoids. He is best know for his work on Jaeger and High Crimes but has worked on numerous titles including James Bond, Mother Panic, Moon Knight and Guardians of the Galaxy to name just a few of the titles he has worked on.

Hi Ibrahim we are so delighted to have you here with us today, we have been fans of your work since your High Crimes comic with Christopher Sebela. We are so happy that you are here to chat with us today.

Thanks so much for having me, and for the kind words!

"count-14"

Before we talk about your new graphic novel Count, can we just step back a little bit and talk about you signing a three-book deal with Humanoids, can you tell us how the deal came about?

Count was actually how it came about, haha. I had pitched the book to Humanoids, and we had developed a really great working relationship, and when we were about 2/3 of the way through, Mark Waid and editor Rob Levin presented me with the idea of signing an overall deal for Count and two more books. It was a very good email to receive, haha.

Your new graphic novel Count which is out on the 16th of March it's an adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, what made you want to adapt Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo?

I love stories about justice and revenge, and I've really loved the story of Edmond Dantes for a long time. It's the ultimate story of comeuppance, and I realized it was incredibly fertile ground for a reimagining of this scale. There are also a lot of themes in the original that are sadly still relevant today; classism, wrongful imprisonment, governmental corruption... I wanted to amplify some of that by putting it through a new lens that highlights the fact that whether it's 200 years ago in France, or in this adjacent sci-fi world I've created, they're issues that affect us all.

"count-15"

What has it been like working with Humanoids?

Great!

When did you start working on Count?

I had the idea to adapt it back in 2017, and then I began the process of slowly developing it in my head for a while as I did various other projects, and then I went back to it in earnest in 2018 and started chipping away at character designs. I pitched it in early 2019, and then started working on it full time in the summer of that year.

Brad Simpson and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou are both working with you on the Count, how did they join the project?

Hass and I have been online friends for a handful of years, and I had been chomping at the bit to collaborate with him on something. So when the opportunity came up I was thrilled that we were able to ask him to join this project. Brad and I had a lot of mutual friends in comics and so I was familiar with him and his work, and when it was time to find the right colorist for the book, his work was 100% what the book needed. And luckily, he was available at the time!

During the adaption process is there any part of the process that you enjoy the most, the layout of the pages, pencilling, inking?

I actually came to the realization recently that my favorite part is always the step that I'm about to do next. Then when I'm doing it, I can't wait to get to the next step, because then that step is my favorite part, haha. If I had to choose though, I think penciling is my favorite. It's often the most relaxing (unless I keep messing up a face and having to redraw it over and over).

"count-16"

Before you signed your deal with Humanoids, what did you think about them as a publisher?

Humanoids is a publisher that I think people discover when their taste in, and love of, the comics medium and what it has to offer elevates to the next level, and they begin to go deeper into the rabbit hole. For me personally, I got into comics, I read a bunch of the excellent superhero books that are available, and then I went "okay, what's next? What else is out there?" and that's when I discovered Humanoids.

How would you describe Count?

Count is a story about revenge, retribution, and revolution, with cool sword fights, and robots.

What has it been like working on Count?

Incredibly fun and very exhausting, haha.

"count-17"

Do you have a favourite scene from Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo?

I really love the scene where Albert has challenged Edmond to a duel, and Edmond in a display of prowess, shoots a bullet through the ace of spades on a playing card. It was a cool way to show how much he had honed himself over the years.

We would love to know what comics are you currently reading?

I recently tore through several volumes of The Undertaker by Ralph Meyer and Xavier Dorison from Europe Comics. It's a really cool western about a traveling undertaker who is more than he appears to be. I also recently finished Hawkeye: Freefall by Matthew Rosenberg and Otto Schmidt, which was maybe the funniest comic I've ever read, and very good.

"count-18"

Would you have any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

I hope you enjoy Count! If you're curious about it, you can visit www.countcomic.com and watch a pretty cool trailer that I put together for the book, and there you'll also find a link to a number of purchase options. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this!

We would like to say thank you to Ibrahim for taking the time to sit and chat with us. We wish him all the best for his new project, Count which will be out on the 16th of March from Humanoids.

A rare plant that is said to cure all illnesses, there is said to be one amongst them called the Celestial Aweto that may even grant eternal life. This trio of travellers are known far and wide as the Aweto Seekers, who sell their findings to the rich and wealthy for a hefty profit. However they are also feared by many, as in order to obtain this plant they must steal it from the enormous Earth deities: the Chadolos, that many follow and protect. After one such hunt, Xinyue discovers the offspring of their prey and instead vows to protect it from his family. All the while, they are being followed by warriors from the same tribe that they just stole this little creature from. Much danger lies ahead for Xinyue, but just who can he rely on when his secret is exposed.

"thehuntison4-5"

This story is visually stunning, The Hunt Is On: Book 1 Reviewand is one that carries a unique storytelling and artstyle belonging to the author. Nie Jun was born in Qinghai, a province in the western part of China. It mostly consists of a high altitude Tibetan plateau, that is sparsely populated. However it also has a strong culture and is home to many Buddhist monks, who are renowned producers of thangka, which are religious paintings depicted on silk or cotton. Which I believe is very reminiscent of the artstyle in this series. The story also takes place in a country much similar to China, centuries ago. Much similar in ways to our own, but also more mystical and magical with the addition of giant Earth deities, large insects and similar races that seem to be a cross between humans and insects. In some ways, it kind of reminds me of the world from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

"thehuntisontheon6-7"

This is only Book One and our story is just beginning, but we have a good stable start at the moment as well as a quick introduction into our characters. From the get go, this trio seemed like an unusual bunch. Having later discovered the truth behind this ‘family’, Xinyue’s reality has shattered. With little to no information on his heritage and homeland, just what will happen to him next? His ‘brother’ Qiliu also has his own mysteries to solve. Just what exactly is he? How did he meet Xinyue and just why is he so obsessed about finding the celestial aweto?

Both Xinyue and Qiliu have their own special talents, the former is capable of controlling insects with the beating of his drums and is able to speak an ancient language that is used by the divine Chadolos. Whilst the older brother has large insect wings that protrude from his back allowing him to glide through the air. Just who exactly are these two boys?

"thehuntison8-9"

Aweto Seekers is a dying occupation, due to how difficult the job has become. Although it can wield a high profit, the Aweto have become scarce to find. These plants are found on top of a Chadolos head, and have been said to be the home of the giants’ spirit. Once removed, the Chadolo dies. In this book, we meet a tribe who have been worshipping their Chadolo as it has provided for them ever since they were once attacked by ‘wolf ravagers’. Now remember that name, as it will appear again at the end of the book and should give a big clue as to where this story will be going. I am also very curious to see where Qiliu’s story goes, as so far this is the more interesting backstory. Also it won’t be long I say, before the warriors of the tribe they attacked catch up wanting to take revenge and rescue the young chadolo.

"thehuntison10-11"

Both the story and illustrations for “Seekers of Aweto” was created by Nie Jun. As I have mentioned before, he was born in the Tibetan plateau of Qinghai in China. A remote place, but that didn’t stop this man from developing his talent for drawing and coming up with fun stories. Much of which has to do with ‘wandering’ lead characters. Having later discovered the art of cartooning from around the world, which led him to Japan where he worked as a researcher at the Manga Department of Kyoto Seika University. Since then, he has refined his artistic skill so that his work can be recognized as a ‘Chinese’ cartoon. As he wished to differentiate his work from other Japanese manga, Western comics and Korean Manhwa. Nowadays, he lives in Beijing and teaches drawing to university students whilst also working on his own books.

"witchesofbrooklyn1"
