This week see the return to the Baltimore universe with the long-awaited release of Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens from Dark Horse comics. The series is co-written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, with art by Bridgit Connell, colours by Michelle Madsen, and covers by Hugo Award-winning illustrator Abigail Larson. We got a chance to sit down with the author Christopher Golden to talk about Baltimore. Christopher Golden has written a wide range of novels and comics, some of these include Angel, Baltimore, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Hellboy just to name a few.

Hi Christopher we are so excited to have you here with us today, we have been fans of your work for a very long time. We are so delighted that you are here to talk with us.

CG: Thanks so much!

You have been part of the Baltimore universe right from the beginning, how does it feel to be still creating in the Baltimore universe?

CG: It’s fantastic. When Mike and I created Baltimore in the novel Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire, we had some thoughts about there being a sequel at some point. But we never dreamed that it would grow to be this enormous mythology that goes back to the beginning of time, and the idea that it would become its own comic book universe never occurred to us. But then Joe Golem happened, and over time it grew organically into this much larger thing. Ideas and characters kept presenting themselves, and now it’s something I spend so much time thinking about, and I just want to keep exploring. And who could be anything but thrilled with the artists we’ve collaborated with while creating the Outerverse? Ben Stenbeck, Patric Reynolds, Peter Bergting, and Bridgit Connell. What a rogues’ gallery that is!

You have been working with Mike Mignola for quite a long time, what's it like working with Mike Mignola?

CG: As of this year, Mike and I have been working together for a quarter century, which is insane. We started way back when I persuaded him to let me write the first Hellboy novel, The Lost Army, which came out in 1997. I’d like to think we’ve been positive influences on one another. We share a certain frame of reference and a lot of similar interests, but our approaches have always been very different. My mind is always searching for explanations for things, trying to force order onto a story, and Mike’s much more about the weirdness and the beauty and not so much about explanation. Working with him has always inspired me by giving me the freedom to NOT explain something, to let the weird and beautiful just be weird and beautiful.

"ladybaltimore_twq1_1"

What can you tell us about the first issue of Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens?

CG: Thirteen years ago, Sofia Baltimore took part in a battle that decided the fate of the world. Her husband—her closest friend, Lord Baltimore—died during that battle. The great evil of the Red King was destroyed, but that didn’t drive all evil from the world. There are still monsters, there’s still darkness. It took time to begin to gather but now, as World War II begins and the Nazis ally themselves with a congregation of witches called the Hexenkorps, Lady Baltimore has gathered a small group of her own allies to combat the insidious evil and the monsters popping up around Europe. In the first issue, she encounters an old ally, Judge Rigo, who tells her that stories abound about Baltimore’s ghost appearing in various places. He needs her help in his own work against the Nazis, and if she’ll help him, he’ll help her get to the bottom of the stories of Baltimore’s wandering ghost. Of course, that’s just the first step in a dark, epic story of war, evil, love, and resurrection—but not the way you might think.

When you and Mike Mignola are writing together how does that work? Do you write the plot together? Do you write the script together?

CG: It really differs from project to project. Most of our work together is done on the phone. Sometimes Mike has a lot of plot elements in his head and we talk them out, or he’ll write down ideas. Sometimes I’ve dreamt up most of a story already. Either way, we hash it out, and then I’ll put flesh on the bones and run it all by him for his take on it all. The best part is that many of these characters and stories are big, sometimes epic, and Mike always has the ability to pull out the essence of a thing, to carve off the fat, whether in the plot or in the dialogue. When I started as a comics writer, I would overexplain everything, and Mike has done his best to cure me of that.

"ladybaltimore_twq1_2"

The Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens comic includes the talent of Bridgit Connell, Michelle Madsen and Abigail Larson. How did they join the Lady Baltimore comic and what has it been like working with them?

CG: Michelle has been the colorist on most of the previous Outerverse comics, and she’s fantastic. I wouldn’t want it any other way. With Bridgit—Katii and I had a long, ongoing email chain and various phone calls as we built a list of potential artists for this book, searching for someone who could bring the right combination of action and movement, who could do the kinds of backgrounds and visual world-building these stories need, and who could give life to the characters’ faces the way we wanted. We winnowed that list down to two or three people and then presented them to Mike. Katii and I had Bridgit as our first choice, but I don’t think we told Mike that. He had met Bridgit before, and loved her work. What I’ve found, working with Mike, is that he has a great eye for artists who are already really good but who have it in them to really level up, and he saw that in Bridgit…and boy, was he right. With Abigail, that was a Katii and Mike decision, but I’m so glad they made it. Abigail’s covers give Lady Baltimore a gorgeous, distinctive style that sets the series apart.

Some of our readers maybe not be familiar with the Baltimore novel and the comic series, is Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #1 new reader-friendly?

CG: Absolutely. My hope is that new readers will pick up Lady Baltimore #1 and, though they shouldn’t need to read Baltimore to understand it, they’ll be intrigued enough to go back to the beginning. Fortunately, the whole Baltimore story is available in two gorgeous, affordable omnibuses—check ’em out!

"ladybatlimore_twq1_3"

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

CG: Just a thanks in advance to readers who are willing to give Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #1 a shot. It’s a wild ride with a new hero I hope you’ll love as much as we do. Sofia is her own woman, with her own mission, and I can’t wait for people to see where it takes her!

We would like to say a big thank you to Christopher for taking the time to talk with us, Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #1 is out this week from Dark Horse comics.

YOUTH follows the turbulent lives of two teenage boys that run away from their small minded town in hopes of making it to California. Frank and River, two queer teens that fall for one another leave their troubled homes behind and drive untl they run out of gas. They soon come across other misfit teens, who welcome them into their group. The fun continues for this new gang of friends, as raging hormones are mixed with liquor and drugs. Soon tempers are flying and before they know it, they are being pursued by the cops. The madness continues, just when they think they have escaped with their lives - a cosmic blast changes these teens' lives forever!

Well every good superhero story has to start somewhere, usually the individuals are formed out of some kind of tragedy and that is exactly what has happened to this group of misfits. Speaking of, there are many similarities between this story and that of the UK sitcom Misfits. Both groups of wayward teens were struck with unusual powers, neither of which knew how best to use them and instead went instead for personal gain. In the later half of this volume, we see the horrifying consequences when one such superpowered individual gets hammered and starts throwing punches at civilians.

"youthvol1_1"

This series is just filled with countless twists and turns, there is never a calm moment. Its as though you got the cast of the TV show Misfits and put them in charge of establishing the X-Men - but first they have to fund it all through any means necessary. These teens are more like anti-heroes and are much more akin to the likes of Deadpool's personality. Look out for yourself and only those in your immediate circle. This is far from the end of YOUTH, as there is already a Season Two being published, which I will also be reviewing.

YOUTH was co created by author Curt Pires and illustrator Alex Diotto. Curt has had a very successful career as of late, as five out of his eight creator owned properties are now in development for TV and film, including YOUTH which has been licensed for Amazon Prime Video. The artwork is quite striking in a way that kind of reminds me of the rough sketches that are used for a storyboard during filming so everyone has an idea of how it will be shot. Some of the panels are quite crude at times, especially when it comes to facial expressions but it still manages to get the point & emotions across to the reader. This series doesn't need to rely on pretty drawings and perfect outlines, the story is more than enough to carry this through. Where it excels is in the scenarios it depicts, the chaos, car chases, drug filled parties and the horny teens making out. It is honestly a wild ride for a comic and its no surprise that it has been picked up for a live action series.

"youthvol1_2"

YOUTH is a modern coming of age series that follows a bunch of misfit teens that have been forgotten both by society and their families. We follow their lives as they go from parties, to drugs, alcohol and car chases. Only for them to be struck down by a cosmic power that totals their van but leaves them with unimaginable powers.

YOUTH Volume 1 is available to buy in physical print from Dark Horse Comics and online through comiXology.

After taking a beat to get my head around how this could have happened, I replied that I was very interested in all of those words. That story turned out to be the one-shot "Long Night at Goloski Station."

Did you read the novel Hellboy: The Bones of Giants?

Many times! I was already a longtime fan of Norse mythology, and so was on it when it came out. I love mythology and folklore in general, but the Norse myths and sagas have been the focus of my interest for ages. I haven’t read the novel recently, as my sister borrowed it and lost it. That’s right, I’m letting everyone know what happened to my treasured copy of the book.

What can you tell us about Hellboy: The Bones of Giants #1?

When [co-writer] Christopher Golden sent me the script, I was immediately impressed with how he adapted the length and format. Issue #1 gets moving right away, and we’re up in the mountains and in streets of Stockholm, being reunited with some familiar characters and meeting some new ones. It’s pretty lean and fast-moving, but without losing the great atmosphere of the book. [Colorist] Chris O’Halloran, who worked with me on Folklords but is new to the Hellboy world, did a hell of a job on colors. I’m really interested to hear what fellow Hellboy fans make of this first issue.

What is it like working with Mike and Christopher?

I had the good fortune to meet them both at a Boston comic con where they offered me the project, and they couldn’t have been more welcoming. Since then, it’s stayed on that same line. This had the potential to be pretty daunting, with me being a huge fan of the character, Mike’s art in general, and this particular Norse-steeped story––but Mike, Chris, and the strong editorial team at Dark Horse took the edge off for sure.

Did you get a full script for each issue?

I did. I can’t remember now if I got them all at once––I don’t think I did. I think they came along as I was working, which was fun to look forward to. I knew the story well, but to see how Chris adapted it for comics was really cool.

How good is your knowledge of Norse mythology?

It’s certainly not at an academic level, but I know my myths pretty well. I love the source material and also collect films, comics, and records that are influenced by them. That Norse-inspired material really comes first, chronologically. I got the first real bite with Walt Simonson’s work when I was a little kid, and then later as a teen, I was further infected by the Swedish band Bathory. Then there is Tolkien, who masterfully took from them to help build out his world. Somewhere in there I would have started reading the myths proper, and more recently developed a more focused interest in the medieval Icelandic sagas.

Do you have a favourite scene from Hellboy: The Bones of Giants #1?

I think it’s the Ragnarok scenes. It was a real treat to be drawing Thor and Jormungandr within the Hellboy world, though I’d also be happy drawing pages and pages of Hellboy wandering through mountains. Maybe there can be a slow comics movement, like that seven-hour train ride video from Bergen to Olso. Hundreds of pages of Hellboy wandering, arctic hares, and snow storms. I’m sure that’d go over well. Ha. I’d be into it, though. I watched that seven-hour train video with my father-in-law. It was great. We spent a day at it, took coffee breaks. It was lovely.

Artistically has Hellboy: The Bones of Giants been a challenge to illustrate?

Yes.

If this were a live interview, I’d just leave that hanging for comedic effect, take a long sip of coffee. Seriously though, it was, and it was a good challenge. Hard and worth the fight. It’s a big story with a lot going on. I’d done that one Hellboy issue, Long Night at Goloski Station, which was a single night in a single location really––maybe a more atmospheric story, if that makes sense. I’ve also done a couple of graphic novels outside the Hellboy world, but this was my first time handling Hellboy in a larger story. It was longer than the one-shot, of course, but the pace of the story and the scale of action are also pretty different. Support from everyone at Dark Horse was very helpful, as was looking at all the great Hellboy work that’s been done. Mike’s, of course, but also rereading through Duncan Fegredo’s Hellboy books and Mignolaverse titles by Peter Bergting and Ben Stenbeck. That put fuel in the tank for sure, revisiting what has been done––and has been done so damn well.

What are you currently reading?

I just started Tolkien's Sir Gawain and the Green Knight translation, but I'm only a dozen pages in at the moment. I had just finished the new book by Paul Tremblay before that, Survivor’s Song. There’s a Hellboy connection there––I was surprised when reading a Tremblay short story collection not long ago to come across a short Hellboy story in it. It was really cool, too! For comics, I just picked up the first two issues of Mazebook by Jeff Lemire, and you know everything he makes is wicked cool. I’ve also recently reread Simonson’s Ragnarok series, as that has consistently been one of my very favorite titles in recent times. They just take me back to what got me into comics in the first place. They are exciting, fun, and amazing to stare at. That he is doing his best work now is also heavy-duty inspiring.

We would like to thank Matt for sitting and chatting with us and we wish him and the rest of his team the best of luck with Hellboy: The Bones of Giants.

Adam and Madison find themselves on the run, after they are left fighting for their lives against Madisons’ mothers’ ‘scumbag boyfriend’. As they make their escape, knowing they would be locked up if the authorities were ever to find them. Their car is suddenly struck by a flying purple comet. Just like before, upon touching this ominous object the teens are gifted with immense powers. From super strength to invulnerability, however its not long before a wannabe Nick Fury tracks them down. Can our original gang of super powered YOUTHs from Volume 1 save the day, or are they all destined to be incinerated?

Season Two kicks off with a new set of characters, as we meet a trio of outcast teens from troubled backgrounds. Following on with the similar trend of broken families, drug use, abandonment and hormonal teens, season two of YOUTHs follows a very similar trend to what we saw in Volume 1. All of which is taking place not long after Volume 1 ended. It’s certainly full of action, violence, sex driven teens and bullying. The most intriguing character of them all however, has to be our very own knock-off Nick Fury.

"youthseason2_1"

This high ranking, special forces agent is on the constant prowl of tracking down these super-powered teens. Given just a short amount of time, he even acquired weapons that were capable of taking down these anti-hero Youths. Not only that, but he even bragged about taking down Gods. Who does the guy think he is and where is his spin off series? Apart from this guy, we have to return to our original duo of Frank and River. If you want to see more of these two, then you are just going to have to read the very last issue. There are far too many spoilers, to even mention what happens there.

As it stands, YOUTH was a pretty interesting series. It had taken similar elements and plots from the likes of Marvel and Misfits. However it certainly was a lot more violent and bloody than what I was expecting, it would also make a good TV series. Which luckily for us, it is currently in the works with backing from Amazon Prime Video. Given enough advertising and promotion, this could be the next big thing for people that have enjoyed The Boys and Umbrella Academy. However I could easily see this comic series expanding, but as it stands I think this is the last we will see of them until the TV series hits screens.

"youthseason2_2"

YOUTH was co created by author Curt Pires and illustrator Alex Diotto. Curt has had a very successful career as of late, as five out of his eight creator owned properties are now in development for TV and film, including YOUTH which has been licensed for Amazon Prime Video. The artwork is quite striking in a way that kind of reminds me of the rough sketches that are used for a storyboard during filming so everyone has an idea of how it will be shot. Some of the panels are quite crude at times, especially when it comes to facial expressions but it still manages to get the point & emotions across to the reader. This series doesn’t need to rely on pretty drawings and perfect outlines, the story is more than enough to carry this through. Where it excels is in the scenarios it depicts, the chaos, car chases, drug filled parties, horny teens making out and exploiting heads! It is honestly a wild ride for a comic and its no surprise that it has been picked up for a live action series.

In a World far similar to our own, terrifying supernatural beings have appeared to not only collect the souls of the damned but also grant them horrific deaths. One day you may receive a message from an unknown entity that will inform you of the time and date of your demise. It may be days from now, weeks, months or even decades. However when that time comes, hellish creatures will apparate before you and tear you limb from limb. Thus tracking you down to Hell for your sins. The World has also begun to accept these supernatural events, making it into a religion of sorts, going on crusades to make the sinner repent before their execution. Acting as though they are martyrs for a new World, the mysterious origins of these creatures has yet to be unfolded. Can they be stopped, is every ‘victim’ deserving of their punishment and what has happened to our society when it becomes normal for these deaths to be televised live on air for all to see?

"thehellboundv1_6"

This tale comes to us from Yeon Sang-Ho, the acclaimed director of ‘Train to Busan’ and cartoonist Choi Guy-Seok of webtoon series ‘Songgot’.

Netflix has been hitting it out of the park recently with their catalogue of Asian live action series. With many around the World still talking about the recent success of ‘Squid Game’, I also had just finished ‘Beyond Evil’ just before then. Now the live action adaptation of ‘Hellbound’ has been added to my to watch list, especially after reading this gripping new book. This is infact a live action adaptation of a Webtoon known as ‘The Hell’, which is now being translated into English for the very first time with Dark Horse distributing the physical release. This is only Volume One however, with Volume Two heading our way Summer next year. So this is just a taste of what the live action adaptation will have in store for us, as the original author and illustrator will also be working on the Netflix adaptation. Which is always great to hear, as it will be far closer to the original material and what the creators had envisioned for their work.

"thehellboundv1_7"

‘The Hellbound’ is an international horror series, based in a World far similar to our own but is now going through some unbelievable events. With the appearance of floating heads materializing to certain individuals just to give them a death notice. Perhaps to give them time to enjoy life whilst they can, or more realistically - to repent for their sins. When the time does come, Hellish creatures appear and rip them to shreds, burning their bodies before disappearing once again down to the depths of ‘Hell’. There is no answer as to why this has only started to occur or how the people/victims are chosen. Society however has taken these events as a direct message from God, interpreting it as they must repent, live life without sin and damn all others that go against his teachings. There is even the beginning of a cult emerging - the ‘New Truth Society’, as well as fanatics that are riling on the public. The police, on the other hand, still continue to investigate these deaths. Whilst the media begins to livestream the ‘prophesied’ murders. There is one particular death in this that was heartbreaking, not only for the person involved - but more for the family they left behind. It gave an almost real life scenario of what could very well happen if we all lived in that form of reality.

So if you want to get ahead of everyone else this month, then check out ‘The Hellbound’ Volume 1 when it hits bookshelves. From the cast of Critical Role and their second campaign which involved the Mighty Nein getting involved with the Kryn Dynasty - comes this comic book series in conjunction with Dark Horse Comics. This series follows Leylas Kryn, also known as the Bright Queen, the ruler of the Kryn Dynasty in Xhorhas. This tale is that of a bittersweet love story, as we learn of the Bright Queens romance with her partner Quana, one that has continued across many lifetimes. Both are devoted to assembling the Luxon, a religious and all powerful artifact, in hopes of bringing a new Golden Age to their kingdom. When another piece of the Luxon is found, Quana is sent forth to retrieve it, but what awaits her may be the Dynasties undoing.

Many fans of Dungeons & Dragons have at least heard of the cast of Critical Role, where a group of anime and video game voice actors gather together to film their D&D sessions for the enjoyment of people on the internet. All of this is hosted on Twitch and YouTube every Thursday over on their official Critical Role channels. The World of Exandria and its lore, has all been created by the incredibly talented DM - Matthew Mercer. This comic series is based off of the characters in their second campaign, with this particular series being written by Darcy Van Poelgeest. Here we see a brief glimpse into the life of the Bright Queen of Xhorhas, her partner Quana and their lifelong quests to reunite the Luxons to help their people prosper. Within only this very first issue, we learn of this couple's devotion to one another, their cause and their kingdom. The Luxon is not only a religious artifact, but a being or object of immense power not of this realm. Gathering all of its pieces will be incredibly difficult, as we soon see.

"criticalrole_ttoe_tbq1_1"

Within the livestreams of this campaign, the Bright Queen in my opinion was played with such high regard, as a ruler of a country should. Then this comic shows a somewhat softer side to her when we see moments of her interacting with Quana. Although Quana’s character only appeared briefly in the livestreams, here in these issues we get to learn more about the warrior she has become, her devotion to Leylas’ and how far each of them would go to save the other. It truly is a loving look into their relationship, but also brings forth the realisation that the Kryns are also being targeted by others not even from the Empire. It will be very interesting to see where Issue Two will take this story, as there is plenty of room for expansion.

This mini comics series was written by Darcy Van Poelgeest, a multi award winning writer and director now living in Vancouver, B.C. Not only has his work included producing short films and commercials, but he is also an Eisner Award winning writer as well. Of which he received the Harvey Awards ‘Book of the Year’ and the 2020 Eisner Award for ‘Best Limited Series’ for his debut comic series ‘Little Bird’ (2019). Now he has undertaken the four part mini series that focuses on the Bright Queen from Critical Roles’ Tales of Exandria series. With creative consultation from the loremaster himself Mattew Mercer. Artwork is handled both by CoupleOfKooks (Vox Machina Origins II #5) and Helen Mask.

We are delighted to be joined by Matt Smith; Matt is the creator of Barbarian Lord. Matt has worked on numerous comics including, Folklords, Lake Of Fire, Metal Quest and Jim Henson’s Storyteller.

Hi Matt, it's such a thrill to have you here with us.

How did the opportunity come about for you to be involved in the Hellboy universe again?

As I remember it, I was out raking leaves and listening to music on my headphones when I saw a notification that I got a message––which turned out to be Mike Mignola asking if I was interested in drawing a Hellboy story he was working on about an ancient werewolf hunter.
