Skullcandy Crusher 720 Review

Skullcandy has sent us the Crusher 720 Wireless Headphones in the Primer colour for review. The Crusher 720 is part of Skullcandy’s Crusher headphone range and features their patented Crusher Bass technology, which lets users adjust the bass and physically feel low frequencies while listening to music. The Skullcandy  Crusher 720 Wireless Headphones are priced at €189,99.

When we first received this pair of headphones, I initially thought they were the Crusher 1080 ANC, only to find out that these were actually the Crusher 720. Having spent time using them, they feel like a great addition to the Crusher series, offering a range of features for everyday listening, gaming, and watching content.

The Crusher 720 comes with a range of features, including up to 65 hours of battery life, customisable EQ settings, personal sound tuning, multipoint pairing, LE Audio, Auracast, microphone, low latency audio, and compatibility with the Skullcandy app. They also feature THX Spatial Audio, which provides an immersive 3D surround sound experience.

The packaging for the Crusher 720 features a picture of the headphones, with various specifications and information about the product displayed around the box. Inside, you are provided with a quick user guide, a 3.5 mm AUX cable for wired listening, a USB Type-C to Type-C charging cable, and a drawstring travel bag.

The travel bag is a nice addition, especially if you plan on taking the headphones with you when commuting or travelling. It gives you somewhere to store the headphones when they are not being used, making them easier to transport.

Overall, the packaging keeps things relatively simple while providing the essential accessories you need to get started with the headphones.

The overall design of the Crusher 720 is very similar to the other headphones in the Crusher range. We received the Primer colour, which gives the headphones a nice appearance while keeping to Skullcandy’s minimalist design.

The headphones have a soft cushion around the earcups and along the top of the headband, making them comfortable to wear over longer periods of time. Nothing felt particularly uncomfortable when using them, and the cushioning provides a nice fit around the ears.

The headphones also have a flat-folding and collapsible design, which makes them easier to store away when you are finished using them. This is especially useful when you are carrying them around with you.

One of the main features of the design is the Crusher Bass dial, which allows you to adjust how much bass you want to feel while listening to your music. This is a really cool feature and one that makes the Crusher headphones stand out from more traditional headphones.

The buttons on the headphones allow you to control your music, adjust the volume, manage calls, and access different settings. You can also customise the button controls through the Skullcandy app, which is a nice addition for users who want to personalise how they use their headphones. The Crusher 720 keeps a familiar design that will appeal to those who enjoy Skullcandy’s Crusher range. The headphones feel comfortable, the controls are convenient, and the collapsible design makes them practical for everyday use.

The Skullcandy Crusher 720 are wireless headphones featuring Bluetooth 5.3, 40.7mm drivers, and an impedance of 36Ω ±15%. They have a sensitivity of 110 ±3 dB at 1KHz@0.179V/1mW, a frequency response of 20Hz–20kHz, and weigh 362.8g.

The Crusher 720 offers up to 65 hours of battery life, which is a really good amount for a pair of wireless headphones. This should be more than enough for daily listening, whether you are using them for music, gaming, or watching videos.

They also feature Rapid Charge, where just 10 minutes of charging provides up to 4 hours of playtime. This is particularly handy if you ever forget to charge your headphones and need to use them again fairly quickly.

The headphones also support wired listening through the 3.5 mm AUX cable included in the box, giving you another way to connect them when needed. The battery specifications are promising, and having rapid charging alongside the option for wired listening makes the Crusher 720 a convenient pair of headphones to use throughout the day.

When it comes to sound quality, the Crusher 720 really impressed me. The audio is clear and crisp, and you can hear the different sounds nicely without everything becoming muddled together. Whether you are listening to music, watching videos, or playing games, the headphones provide a really enjoyable listening experience.

Of course, one of the main features of these headphones is the Crusher Bass technology. You can adjust the dial to amplify the bass, and honestly, it is such an amazing feature. When listening to bass-heavy songs, it almost feels like you are inside a speaker. You can really feel the bass thumping along with the music, which makes it perfect for those moments when you just want to sit back and enjoy your favourite tracks.

The bass is particularly enjoyable for songs where you want that extra impact. Being able to adjust it depending on what you are listening to is a great option, as not everyone will want the same amount of bass all the time.

The headphones also feature THX Spatial Audio, which allows you to immerse yourself in 3D surround sound. I thought this feature was pretty cool and found that it worked really well with music that was designed to be listened to in 3D. It creates a more immersive listening experience, although I do not think it is a feature I would find myself using very frequently.

When it comes to the EQ settings, you have three presets to choose from: Music, Movie, and Podcast. Each of these has some differences in how the sound is presented when listening to the respective audio. You also have a custom option where you can adjust the bass, mids, and treble to your liking.

The personal sound tuning feature is another nice addition. You can take a sound test to create your own profile, which customises the audio to better suit your preferences. The test does not take very long to complete either, making it a convenient way to personalise your listening experience.

The Crusher 720 is also great for watching videos and movies. The clear audio makes it easy to enjoy whatever you are watching, and I even ended up using the headphones for gaming at one point. They worked just as well, making them a versatile option for different types of entertainment.

The headphones also have a built-in microphone, which I found to be quite clear. This is useful for calls and gaming, especially if you want to communicate with friends without needing a separate microphone.

The Crusher 720 also features an adjustable Stay Aware mode, which allows you to hear your surroundings while listening to audio. The feature works pretty well, as you can hear the noises around you mixed in with whatever you are listening to. I think this could be particularly useful if you are in a quiet area and someone calls out to you, as you can still hear them even when your volume is turned up.

However, I did feel that this feature was not entirely necessary for these headphones. Since ANC is not included, you can already pick up on a decent amount of the surrounding noise while listening to music. In this case, Stay Aware almost feels like it simply amplifies what you can already hear.

For commuting, I found that I was more conscious of the volume I was using. I generally refrained from turning the headphones above 50%, mainly because some sound can leak out. When you are commuting or sitting near other people, you naturally want to be careful about your music being heard by everyone around you. This is something worth keeping in mind, particularly if you plan on using these headphones in public areas.

The Skullcandy app is compatible with the Crusher 720 and provides a range of options to customise your listening experience.

You can access the three EQ presets, create your own custom 5-band EQ, and complete the personal sound tuning test to create a profile that better suits your preferences. Having these options available is great because everyone listens to audio differently, and being able to adjust the sound makes the headphones feel more personalised.

The app also allows you to customise the button settings, giving you more control over how you use the headphones. You can adjust different functions to suit your preferences rather than being limited to the default controls.

Another feature I liked was Wear Detect. The headphones can detect when you take them off and automatically pause your audio, which is a really convenient feature for everyday use. They also include a 15-minute auto power-off function.

Multipoint Pairing is another useful addition, allowing you to connect to multiple devices, while Auto Connect makes it easier to reconnect to previously paired devices. Google Fast Pair is also included for supported Android devices, making the initial connection much quicker and more convenient.

You also have access to features such as Natural Voice Sidetone for calls, Low Latency Audio, and the ability to activate your assistant.

Skullcandy has another pair of headphones in the Crusher range, the Crusher 1080 ANC, which we previously reviewed. We wanted to briefly compare the Crusher 720 to the Crusher 1080 ANC, as both headphones share a similar overall design and feature the iconic Crusher Bass technology.

After using both the Crusher 720 and the Crusher 1080 ANC, I think the biggest thing to point out is that, although they are both part of the Crusher family, they offer quite different listening experiences. Both have that signature Skullcandy Crusher Bass that lets you physically feel the low-end, but the 1080 ANC takes things a step further with its Bose technology.

The Crusher 720 uses THX Spatial Audio, which gives music, games and videos a wider and more immersive sound. I found this especially noticeable when listening to tracks with a lot going on, as the audio feels like it has more space around you rather than everything coming directly from the left and right earcups. You also get the adjustable Crusher Bass, which is still the star of the show. Using the Crusher Wheel, you can turn the bass from a fairly normal level all the way up to the point where you can actually feel the headphones vibrating on your head. It’s definitely not for everyone, but if you enjoy bass, it’s a lot of fun.

The Crusher 1080 ANC, on the other hand, brings Bose into the equation. Skullcandy has incorporated several Bose technologies into these headphones, including Bose QuietControl Active Noise Cancellation, Bose TrueSpatial and Bose WaveForm Audio Platform. The ANC is probably the biggest difference you’ll notice in everyday use. Rather than simply turning the volume up to drown out your surroundings, the headphones actively work to reduce outside noise. This makes a big difference when you’re travelling, working somewhere noisy or just trying to focus on your music.

Bose TrueSpatial also gives the 1080 ANC a more immersive feel. It works alongside head tracking to make the sound feel like it’s coming from a space around you rather than simply sitting inside the headphones. I found this particularly interesting when watching films or videos, where having that extra sense of space makes the experience feel a little more cinematic. The 720’s THX Spatial Audio still does a good job of widening the sound, but the 1080 ANC feels like it is taking a more premium approach to the whole experience.

Then there’s the WaveForm Audio Platform, which is another Bose addition. Rather than being something you necessarily notice as a standalone feature, it is more about how the headphones handle the overall sound. The idea is to keep the audio feeling balanced and consistent as you change the volume. Combined with the Crusher Bass, this gives the 1080 ANC a slightly more refined presentation while still keeping that ridiculously fun low-end that Skullcandy is known for.

That doesn’t mean the Crusher 720 feels like the lesser headphone, though. In fact, I really enjoyed how straightforward it is. You get the Crusher Bass, THX Spatial Audio, a huge amount of battery life and plenty of customisation through the Skullcandy app. With up to 65 hours of battery life, it can also outlast the 1080 ANC’s 60 hours when ANC is switched off. Both also support rapid charging, so a quick 10-minute charge can give you several hours of playback.

For me, the biggest difference is really about what you want from your headphones. The Crusher 720 feels like the fun, bass-focused option, where the main attraction is being able to turn your music into something you can actually feel. The Crusher 1080 ANC feels more like the complete premium package, combining that Crusher experience with Bose’s noise cancellation and spatial audio technology.

Another difference is the overall package and accessories. The Crusher 1080 ANC came with a roll-top travel bag that I particularly liked, with a soft interior and a strap that allowed us to attach it to a bag. The Crusher 720 comes with a drawstring travel bag, which is still useful for transporting the headphones, but I personally preferred the carrying case provided with the 1080 ANC.

There is also a price difference between the two, with the Crusher 1080 ANC costing around €60 more based on the price difference we considered. With that additional cost, you are getting ANC, Sound by Bose technologies, and some extra features that may be useful depending on how you plan to use your headphones.

In terms of their overall design, the two headphones are very similar, so a lot of it comes down to personal preference and which features you value most. Suppose you want ANC and the additional Bose audio technologies; the 1080 ANC offers those features. If you are more interested in the Crusher Bass experience alongside THX Spatial Audio and the other wireless features, the Crusher 720 still provides plenty to enjoy.

Honestly, there are only a few things I would suggest changing about the Crusher 720. One thing I noticed was that sound could leak out when the volume was turned up, which is something to keep in mind when using the headphones around other people, especially when commuting.

I also think that having ANC would have been a nice addition, particularly for people who plan on using these headphones frequently in public areas. However, this is something that is available on the Crusher 1080 ANC, so it ultimately comes down to which features you are looking for. Other than that, I really enjoyed the overall sound quality, comfort, and customisation options available on the Crusher 720.

The Skullcandy Crusher 720 Wireless Headphones are a really enjoyable pair of headphones, especially if you love listening to music with powerful bass. The Crusher Bass technology is such a standout feature, allowing you to physically feel the bass while still enjoying clear audio across different types of content.

skullcandy_c720_8

The headphones also offer a comfortable fit, customisable EQ settings, THX Spatial Audio, multipoint pairing, Wear Detect, and compatibility with the Skullcandy app. These features make them a versatile option for listening to music, watching movies, gaming, and everyday use.

Although I would have liked to see ANC included, the Crusher 720 still has plenty to offer, and the ability to customise the sound to your liking makes the listening experience even more enjoyable. The sound quality is clear, the bass is incredibly fun to use, and the headphones are comfortable enough to wear over longer periods of time.

Overall, the Crusher 720 is a great addition to the Crusher range, particularly for those who want that signature Skullcandy bass experience alongside a range of useful wireless features. If you are looking for a pair of headphones that lets you feel the music as much as you hear it, then be sure to check it out!

Overall: 8.5/10
