Mullet MadJack is a first-person, high-octane, crazy-ass shooter full of attitude and has a fantastic retro 90s art style. It’s a mixture of rogue-like and arcade shooter, where you have a time limit that can be extended by killing enemies to get to the end of each level and progress through this never-ending gore fest. It’s a thrilling shooter, while simple in one aspect, and it has tons going for it with its fast actioning and roguelike game-playing elements.
The first and most striking thing was the art style when I booted up the game. This 90s art style is superb, but it’s in a modern dystopian future where the game is almost a Twitch streamer-like experience; you will see people cheering you on in chat and a narrator who will guide you through each level and the game. The tone, voice-over, and art style are impeccable and are brilliantly created to immerse you in this wild first-person shooter world.
The game starts pretty straightforward: kill the bad guys and try to save the heroine, who is somewhere in a vast multi-floor building. You have a 10-second timer, which will expire if you don’t kill enemies quickly enough; killing goons, drones, and other random people will extend your timer. If the timer expires, you are a chump loser who must start again and take the “L”. At the end of each stage, you can get power-ups, new weapons, and new gadgets. Choose wisely, though, as the difficulty ramps over the levels. You have to be strategic with your upgrade choice. If certain weapons are found to be almost downgraded, you would take a power-up instead, so the game is also working against you.
Progressing through the game also introduces more enemies and more complex levels, which will sap you of that previous time. The game is challenging but fun; you can change the difficulty if it’s too hard, but where is the fun? Also, as you progress through the game, you will encounter bosses at the end of each section. The bosses are vastly from the corridor levels but are fantastic and freaky. There is a boss-run mode as well to relive those fantastic boss fights.
Mullet MadJack is a visually stunning game with excellent gameplay and mechanics. It is a fast, frenetic shooter that is fun and easy to pick up. Before you know it, you will kill goons left, right, and centre. It’s a fantastic game with endless fun!
Overall: 9.5/10

Enjoys more than the odd game, long time gamer, somewhat a technologist and everything else in between.
Also enjoys a good solid game of FIFA online. Currently PS4, XBOX 360 and STEAM.
