Summary:

Destination Kill starts off with Gina Serene narrating the changes that have happened in the inner boroughs of New York, which is central city. She decides to go on vacation and describes the growing unrest among labourers against Overcon, a corporation that focuses on deploying robots and replacing labor with machines.

The artwork looks boxy and stylistic, which is a great touch. The dialogue is conversational and relatable; it is easy to read. Gina narrates throughout the book, which keeps the story grounded as readers will experience the city through her eyes. She works for the Central City Police as she fights to protect the peace of the neighborhood and the city. We meet other characters such as Yama, Gina’s partner in crime and other members of the police squad, such as the chief of police. Gina can be described as a dutiful woman dedicated to her assignments, yet a workaholic.

The lettering in this book is fantastic. Words pop out at readers, almost as if they are supplementary sound effects to fight scenes and dramatic entrances; the lettering pulls your attention to where action is happening, which creates a fun experience of jumping from panel to panel when reading. The illustrations themselves remind me of the boxy artwork that’s seen in video games such as Jet Set Radio, more stylish than simply technical.

Readers who enjoy punchy action and dialogue will enjoy Destination Kill. This book is more suited for young adults, and I think most who pick this up will enjoy the story from start to finish.

Overall: 9.5/10
