Culbard (Everything, Tales from the Umbrella Academy: You Look Like Death) for a chat.

Hi I.N.J. Culbard; it's so wonderful to have you here with us.

Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?

I'm I. N. J. Culbard. I write and draw comics.

How would you describe the Salamandre graphic novel?

Salamandre is the story of a young boy who loses his father and in turn loses himself in his grief and is sent to stay with his grandfather in a country that has lost its freedom of expression to a totalitarian regime.

"salamandre1"

Can you tell us about the origins of Salamandre?

The story draws on my experiences growing up on both sides of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War of the 1970’s right up to the fall of the Berlin Wall in the late 1980’s. I took a dramatic event from my own childhood and used that as my finale and worked my way backwards from that to make sense of what was going on at the time. Although it draws heavily on that experience, the world of Salamandre is a sort of misremembered version of our own.

Who is Kaspar Salamandre?

He’s a young boy who draws comics and bears more than a passing resemblance to me at the same age.

"salamandre2"

How long have you been working on Salamandre?

I started work on the script in the summer of 2021 and finished drawing the book in the summer of 2022.

The story is very emotional; it has lots of ups and downs. From when you started to write the story and when you finished writing the story. Did your writing follow the initial idea for the story, or did the path change for the story as you wrote it?

I wrote the pitch in one sitting and gave it to my editor (Karen Berger) the following day having not slept all night. I’d worked out a pretty solid breakdown for the entire thing that was initially about 11 pages long. Working with Karen I managed to tighten up the story (it had a lot more dinner party scenes in it beforehand and there were some logic leaps that needed addressing) and then I wrote the script from that outline. There were tiny changes from there, mostly dialogue though.

"salamandre3"

You are creating all of the art for the graphic novel. What part of that process do you enjoy the most, pencils, inking or colouring?

Every part of the process is different and I enjoy every part for very different reasons. Every step of the process is a step closer to the finish. I guess it’s the satisfaction of a completed page where everything is working together.

Artistically has it been a challenge creating the world that Kaspar inhabits?

I was drawing on a lot of memories, but also very idealistic notions of the ways I wished things had been, so I wasn’t really restricted by things like “Oh, it looked like this” or “they dressed like this.” This was a misremembered past after all. I could do what I wanted since it was an off kilter version of our own world. It was more liberating than challenging.

"salamandre4"

What has it been like working with Berger Books and Dark Horse Comics?

Dark Horse Comics are fantastic. Always brilliant to work with — I’ve done a few things for them now including an Umbrella Academy spin off, but the team I worked with directly on Salamandre was Berger Books and I absolutely love working with them. Every time I work with them I learn so much. It changes the way I work on other things. Looking forward to doing it again.

A big thank you to I.N.J. Culbard for chatting with us. We would like to wish I.N.J. Culbard the best of luck with the Salamandre graphic novel.

ComicBuzz Chats With I.N.J. I'm an Italian cartoonist who turned professional about three years ago after a lot of indie apprenticeship. My first long comic was Melvina published by Bao Publishing and in America under the name and Mel the Chosen by Penguin Random House, in France under Dargaud and in Spain under Liana Editorial. I won a few awards and also worked in illustration for a short time. The latest works were with Mike Mignola and a short story with Skottie Young.

How did you get involved with the Leonide the Vampyr series?

One day I posted some ink sketches on Facebook. Mike noticed one of these that featured a very endearing yet fearless vampire girl. He loved it and we started talking about her: a story about her would be crazy! Within a day or two he had already written the subjects of the two issues and I totally fell in love with them. She was dark and archaic, a mix between folklore and gothic, just the kind of mood I love!

"leonide_crows1_1"

How would you describe Leonide the Vampyr: A Christmas for Crows?

A perfect Christmas ghostly story, which mixes deeply obscure characters in a festive atmosphere. It seems to smell like gingerbread and cinnamon, but also the humidity of a saloon that has been closed for too long with all the darker creatures locked inside.

What's it like working with Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart?

Crazy! I would have no other way to describe it… Mike has always been in the Olympus of my beloved and favorite authors. Being able to work with him was something magical, like a closing circle. He left me free to express myself as I wanted both in the creation of the characters and in the direction of the table, I could not have asked for better. Dave gave life to our Leonide with perfectly fitting colors. He managed, remaining faithful to his way of working, to approach my style and enhance it to the maximum. A marvel!

"leonide_crows1_2"

Do you have a favourite scene from Leonide the Vampyr: Miracle at the Crow's Head?

My favorite scene is definitely the one where Leonide captures the souls of those present. She does it with an almost out of tune sweetness compared to the crudeness of the gesture: she looks like a little girl who enjoys picking flowers in a field but in reality she is sucking the life out of them. And then Dave's colors made this moment epic.

For any of our readers who are not familiar with; Leonide, what can you tell us about her?

Leonide is a little vampire who is found almost lifeless in a coffin carried by the sea after a shipwreck. She's actually not the classic being we all expect: violent, bloodthirsty and brutally evil. She performs her gestures with great delicacy and even when she defends herself from the mummy bishop, she finds stratagems worthy of a witty intelligence.

"leonide_crows1_3"

What has the feedback been like for Leonide the Vampyr: Miracle at the Crow's Head?

It was a riot of beautiful reviews! People immediately fell in love with our protagonist and, even here in Italy, at Lucca Comics, there were many requests for a drawing of Leonide. I think our vampire already has a lot of fans who keep asking for more stories. And I hope so, there is really a lot to tell.

When you are working with Mike Mignola on a comic, do you get a full script from Mike?

Not entirely. In my case Mike sent me a script in which he asked what he wanted to see on each page, without forcing me to give him a vision of him. It was challenging and terrifying at the same time: I felt free to move the camera and the characters however I wanted but I didn't want to disappoint Mike and our team with bad choices… in the end, however, everything turned out well.

"leonide_crows1_4"

How long have you been working on Leonide the Vampyr: A Christmas for Crows?

I worked on the second issue of Leonide for a few months in the spring. We had to give everyone, from letterers to the colorist, the opportunity to then be able to complete their work calmly before the release.

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

In the meantime, thank you for reading my words up to here, for me this is a very emotional journey and I hope Leonide enters everyone's heart and you want to stay with us to get to know her better. I couldn't be happier to have been able to work with Mike and Dave and with all the Dark Horse team, they are unique!

"leonide_crows1_5"

A big thank you to Rachele for chatting with us. The Ambassadors will lead directly into the big 2023 Summer event BIG GAME, where all the Millarworld characters from Kick-Ass, Kingsman, Starlight, Jupiter's Legacy, and more, come together in a huge adventure drawn by Marvel superstar Pepe Larraz.

"theambassadors1b"

The Ambassadors #1 will also feature variant covers by Larraz and Gigi Cavenago and give us a superhero comic unlike anything we've ever seen before.

"theambassadors1_1"

"The idea for this is actually incredibly simple. Superheroes have always felt very American to the rest of the world, but what if the scientist who cracks the super genome is in Asia? What if this genius billionaire Korean girl launches the world's first real-life super-team from a headquarters in Seoul and it all takes off on the other side of the world with America watching like they watched the USSR putting the first man in orbit? What's exciting is that this opens us up to doing completely fresh kinds of superhero stories and this one has a Willy Wonka appeal," said Millar. "This scientist putting out a message to the world to volunteer their services and say why they deserve superpowers. It's a global competition and only six people will be chosen out of eight billion. It's worked out GREAT and I'm really excited for people to see this. I started working on it back in 2018 and some of the artists are so brilliant and so committed to their work they've spent four years on their single issue.
