Summary:
The first issue starts as Archie rushes to class after a late alarm bell has rung a few times. A few characters that are central to the Archie universe and Riverdale are named, such as Betty and Veronica, which he mentions to himself. This issue contains several short stories that are 6-10 pages, and many of the stories feature Archie and how he moves throughout the world.
In the story “Yes we Cannes!”, Archie tries to help his love interest Veronica in making a short film for Riverdale’s film festival. Another short story features Archie racing against Reggie, dressed up as a teenage delinquent from the 50s.
Another story features Jughead, called “Jughead’s Journal Part 1”, where Jughead reminisces on his favorite hangout diner, Pop’s. The issue ends with Jughead’s story, a bittersweet ending.
This issue also features a sneak peek at Sabrina the Teenage Witch issue #1, as well.
The coloring in this issue is a nice change of pace, as there’s a lighter color palette happening here; that fits with the youthful feel of Riverdale and its citizens. I think Archie has been a great series for teens and pre-teens, and this issue shows exactly that point. Readers that enjoy simple, slice-of-life stories and Archie fans will enjoy the start to this series.
