Summary:

The first issue of The Last Driver starts out with the first few pages of a cascade of images. Political images, illustrations stating the fragmented pieces of what was known as the United States of America. The introduction beautifully introduces the main character named Clutch and his plight: Stopping the “powers that be” from shutting out the lower classes of people from having goods and electricity from the central power grid that controls all areas of America.

Clutch drives a Mustang with the number 4 on the side as he drives into what looks like Times Square, demanding justice. There is a stark separation between people who live in the cities versus the people who live in the desert. It’s obvious upon reading a few pages that driving on the road is a way of life for him, and that it represents a sense of freedom from the authoritarian control of the grid.

Clutch seems to have a relationship with the grid authorities, as they take him away in handcuffs for driving a car, as it’s outlawed in this present future. He also reveals that he used to work in the smuggling business. The issue ends with authorities discussing the need to stop crime and prevent criminals like Clutch from taking over the grid.

I believe that readers will stay engaged throughout this issue, as it’s a great setup to the overall plot and starts off with great world-setting. Sean Murphy is known for delivering immersive and tight dialogue and visuals, and this series has started at a great point.

Overall: 10/10
