Summary:
This issue starts off with a puppy reminiscing about his life with his human owner until he ran away from home and was caught by a dog catcher he called “The Giant”. The puppies are dropped off at the dog pound, as the flashback continues with a meteor crashing on Earth’s surface. The debris from the meteor makes an impact on two blocks of Los Angeles’s metro downtown.

The meteor makes a huge protective barrier in downtown Los Angeles, which is nicknamed “The Gleam”. Groups of dogs are sent in with astronaut suits to enter “The Gleam” and investigate. A group of thugs named “Chromedome and the goo gang” are poking people with guns until the Super Mondo Mega Mutts make their first appearance.
Frankee, the demolitions expert, Freddy the Cyber-Ronin, Wolf, the lover boy and Griffy, the hard-headed bruiser of the team. Wolf saves a woman from a thug by shooting the man in the face, and Freddy slices the guns that the thugs hold into smaller pieces. Griffy shoots another thug with machine guns strapped to his extra-large shoulder pads.

The story continues as the boys go home to eat fresh spaghetti takeout, as the news brags about a new group of vigilantes that are helping the Los Angeles citizens. The news shows a town hall meeting in a live broadcast, as the mayor states that the Grey Cube LLC is here to help lower crime by using AI technology. Wolf saves a reporter from impending doom as they hitch a ride on the “muttmobile”, which is the dog’s version of a Mystery Machine or another branded vehicle. The issue ends with another animal scouting the Mutts’ location on a motorcycle.
Great start to a new IP such as this; I had a lot of fun reading Super Mondo Mega Mutts, and I would highly encourage this series to readers who are fans of 80s properties such as Thundercats and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Overall: 10/10
