ComicBuzz Chats With David “D.B.” Andry

With Estuary: A Ghost Story releasing from Oni Press on April 8th, written by Tim Daniel & David “D.B.” Andry, and art from Maan House, we are delighted to be joined by David “D.B.” Andry. David has written numerous comics, including Resonant, Morning Star and Creepshow.

Hi David, it’s so great to have you with us.

Could you please introduce yourself to our readers? Hello readers! My name is David ‘DB’ Andry and I’m a physical therapist and comic book writer from Sacramento, CA. Some of my credits include Resonant from Vault comics, Morning Star from Mad Cave Studios and Creepshow from Image.

Can you tell us how you got involved with Estuary: A Ghost Story?

My co-writer Tim Daniel and I had a chance to pitch a series idea to our now editor from Oni Press, Bess Pallares. We had wanted to do a romance story for a while, as well as a ghost story. We put those two ideas together along with our shared history of being raised religious and growing up in California, spending time along the northern California coast and Estuary was what came out.

When you first heard the pitch for Estuary: A Ghost Story, what did you think?

Since Tim and I came up with the pitch, I thought it was great! Seriously though, some ideas fall into place easily, some you struggle with for a while. Estuary was definitely the first kind. It immediately felt personal, with a heart that both Tim and I cared about.

Can you tell us about the process of writing Estuary: A Ghost Story with Tim Daniel?

Tim and I have been working together for a while, so we have a pretty smooth process. We talk for a long time before the writing process starts, making sure we know the characters, the themes of the story, and the basic plot. Once we have a solid idea of the story, Tim comes up with some inspirational key art to guide us (for Estuary, this key art turned into the C cover for the first issue) and I’ll start a very rough draft. We talk that over, pass it back and forth until we’re happy with it, then one of us will start scripting and it again goes back and forth until it’s polished and ready for art.

Who is Maris Cristobal?

She is an underwater archaeologist, someone who thrives on solving mysteries and exposing the past. She is both afraid of the water and inexplicitly drawn to it. She has been raised religious, but has struggled with finding her faith.

As an artist, what does Maan House bring to Estuary: A Ghost Story?

Everything! Maan is a horror master. He knows how to set a scene, how to hint at things to come and obscure things that should remain hidden. His use of blacks and heavy shadow perfectly set the mood for Estuary.

How long have you been working on Estuary: A Ghost Story?

Feels like not very long, but looking back at my files, the first rough draft for issue 1 was written in October 2022. But that’s how comics go, both a marathon and sprint.

Do you have a favourite ghost story?

I’m a really big fan of Mike Flanagan, so I would say The Haunting of Hill House. And maybe not as conventionally thought of as a ghost story, but in Macbeth and Hamlet the ghosts were always a cool part of those stories.

What can you tell us about Estuary: A Ghost Story?

If you like mystery, ghost stories, romance, and justified retribution, this might be the book for you. The art is gorgeous, hopefully you’ll love the characters as much as we do, and you’ll be satisfied with the ending.
