Since its inception (two issues ago) Skyward has been a very unique tale. A future with a lot less gravity and all that entails was a great premise. The main character, Willa, is fierce and funny and the mystery around her father has me hooked. I’m all in for this engaging series, and have already recommended it to several other readers.

This third issue, in particular, was somewhat suspenseful. Willa finds herself in one tough situation after another. I love the sassiness of Joan, and the awkwardness of some of the other side characters that make an appearance. In the beginning, there was rather a long conversation that lasted quite a few pages, which normally makes for some boring panels, but the variety of angles helped with that.

The art, in fact, is very well done. I like the clarity of the images that is there, despite the twisty perspectives and actions at various times in the story. I did wonder a bit if something would look like what was portrayed if the world did indeed have less gravity. In fact, I find that I am always looking for how things would be different in this world of low gravity, and I have found a few discrepancies in the comics, but they don’t bother me much. It’s like when you watch a movie that was supposed to be filmed in Oklahoma, but there are mountains in the background. It takes you out of the story for a second, but isn’t that big of a deal.

I liked the dialogue a lot: it was realistic and witty. The comments of Willa and Joan are especially fun, and I hope I get to see more interactions between these two.

Generally, I really like this book and will continue to read consecutive issues. It’s different, it’s entertaining, and I’m very content with the quality.

Overall: 8/10
