When Language Fails is the story of two estranged sisters who are thrown together at the outbreak of a strange, unknowable war. Over the course of just a few hours, they try and repair their relationship, and survive the war that has broken out in their city.
When Language Fails is about family, not fitting in, violence and war.
The genesis of the story comes from growing up in Ireland during The Troubles, a time where every day brought murder, bombings, violence, terrorism. It was simply part of what life was. But growing up in the South of Ireland, far removed from the violence, created a strange dissonance where the war was part of my life, but without ever endangering or impacting me in any way.
The story examines this, and tries to ask some questions about our attitudes to war and violence. These are themes which, despite the improved situation in Ireland, remain sadly relevant throughout the world.
