“Twister,” the blockbuster disaster film from the ’90s co-written by Michael Crichton, captivated audiences with its dramatic depiction of tornadoes, including the iconic scene of a cow being swept into the sky. The high-stakes sequel, “Twisters,” ramps up the action with multiple tornadoes wreaking havoc. Directed by Lee Isaac Chung, known for his acclaimed film “Minari,”.
“Twisters” stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate, a brilliant and daring tornado researcher. Kate, sometimes referred to as a tornado whisperer, has an innate ability to predict where tornadoes will form in Oklahoma. Haunted by a traumatic event from her past, she is acutely aware of the devastating power of these natural disasters.
Her mother, played by Maura Tierney, highlights extreme weather’s increasing frequency and severity, hinting at climate change, though the film avoids explicitly mentioning it. Kate devises a new scientific method to disrupt tornadoes by firing chemical reagents into them to save lives and communities. She is supported by Javi (Anthony Ramos), the project leader who might harbour romantic feelings for her.
Their efforts are complicated by the arrival of Tyler, a reckless and thrill-seeking storm chaser portrayed by Glen Powell, whose striking good looks seem almost artificial. Tyler, who chases storms for the adrenaline rush and his popular YouTube channel, clashes with Kate, though their antagonism hints at a possible romantic spark. The film uses the tornado as a metaphor for sexual excitement, suggesting an underlying romantic tension without explicit scenes.
The chase for the ultimate meteorological phenomenon culminates in a dramatic climax that captures the characters’ intense emotions. “Twisters” delivers exciting set pieces and solid performances from Ramos and Powell, who vie for Kate’s attention. Despite its entertainment value, the film leaves one wishing for a more substantial role for Edgar-Jones, who shone in the TV series “Normal People.” Nonetheless, the movie provides thrilling, stormy visuals and a fun cinematic experience.
