Dark Horse Comics and Hope Nicholson Bring Together an All-Star Creative Team for the Anthology “Pros and (Comic) Cons”

MILWAUKIE, Ore., (October 30, 2018)—Editor Hope Nicholson is no stranger to bringing together diverse and talented creators from every corner of the comics industry for humorous and emotional anthologies. Following the success of The Secret Loves of Geek Girls and The Secret Loves of Geeks comes a brand-new anthology of personal stories by writers, artists, cartoonists, and professional geeks around the globe.

Pros and (Comic) Cons explores the mad world of comic conventions and the funny, sad, sweet, embarrassing, and heartfelt stories that go along with them. These true-to-life stories showcase surprise celebrity run-ins, fan encounters that changed creator’s lives, costume malfunctions, and practical advice for both new and experienced convention attendees. Featuring comics and essays by Brian Michael Bendis (The Man of Steel), Greg Pak (The Incredible Hercules), Jenn St-Onge (Nancy Drew), Tim Seeley (Hack + Slash), Kieron Gillen (The Wicked and the Divine), Sina Grace (Iceman), Amy Chu (Green Hornet) and many more, Pros and (Comic) Cons paints a picture of the geek culture life that shapes us, encourages us, and exhausts us every summer.

With a beautiful cover by Colleen Coover, Pros and (Comic) Cons TPB goes on sale May 29, 2019, and is available for pre-order at Amazon and your local comic shop.

Writer: Tim Seeley

Artists: Sami Basri/Otto Schmidt

Cover: Rafael Albuquerque

Colors: Jessica Kholinne

Letters: Dave Sharpe

Assistant Editor: Dave Wielgosz

Editor: Chris Conroy

Group Editor: Jamie S. What opens with Harley running the Joker down with her car goes to a giant vat of tapioca pudding - that serves as a metaphor for Harley having escaped the grasp of the clown - and then to a dark and twisted fairy tale landscape on which Harley makes clear that she is vicariously living her own fairytale through Batman and Catwoman’s wedding.

However, the dynamic of power reverses quite easily. By playing with Harley’s need for his approval, the Joker is able to spot the flaws in her plan and save himself from certain death.

"bpttwhqvsj1_2"

In the end, the Joker’s biggest complain, of not having been invited to the big wedding takes the spotlight, and the epilogue paves the way for the events on the serial The Best Man, seen in Batman #48 and #49, the two issues preceding the big day.

To the Batrimony we go!

Overall: 10/10

Writer: Tim Seeley

Artists: Travis Moore/Otto Schmidt

Colors: Tamra Bonvillain

Letters: Dave Sharpe

Cover: Rafael Albuquerque & Dave McCaig

Published by: DC Comics

Spoilers

I’m adoring the Prelude to the Wedding series. Actually, I’m adoring this entire new run of Batman, that has been dealing with the characters in a very tactful and human manner without losing all the fun of the action and almost over the top violence Batman is known for.

The second issue starts with some wholesome fun, with Superman and Nightwing throwing a bachelor party for the Caped Crusader. After some burgers eaten while in full superhero regalia, the plans for an impromptu fishing trip inside a pocket universe are ruined by the interruption of the supervillain Hush.

"batman_pttwnvsh1_1"

While Superman is distracted by Hush’s diversion, Batman and Nightwing face off against the villain. Trying to defend his disciple from and oncoming threat to his life, Batman accidentally sends both Nightwing and Hush through the pocket universe’s door, and they end in an alternate reality Gotham, where only the dangerous, faceless echoes of its citizens inhabit.

Hush’s resentment towards Nightwing then shows up fully fledged. Bruce Wayne’s former best friend struggles to understand why Dick Grayson has Bruce’s full trust when for he has been completely forgotten, proof being that he was not invited to be one of Bruce’s groomsmen.

With the help of an interdimensional figure that very closely resemble The Dude, from The Big Lebowsky, the duo of rivals search for a place where their individuality and identity resonates stronger so they can fight against the echoes, and guided by Nightwing, they end up in Wayne Manor.

"batman_pttwnvsh1_2"

It’s there the the difference between Tommy and Dick’s relationship with Bruce is made clear. While Dick was always there for Bruce and has in the Manor a huge part of what made him who he is, Tommy did nothing but to envy Bruce’s life, and has in the Manor and the time he spent there his biggest weakness of character, instead of a strength.

Once again, we have an ending that’s sweet without being sappy, with Dick coming to terms with not being Bruce’s best man, but estating that he never wanted to distance himself from him when moving to Bludhaven. He only wanted space to be himself, but still wanted to be there for his friend.

One more time I’m left with a warm fuzzy feeling inside, mixed with the apprehension of the clear party poopers that are going to crash the wedding, as shown in the epilogue. Seeing the relationships between the Bat-family and adjacent members towards the bride and groom to be is fanservice enough to last me a lifetime, and all the action peppered in between it’s just as awesome and enough to satiate my “thirst for blood.”

Overall: 10/10
Writer: Tim Seeley (with Steve Seeley for story writing)

Artist: Priscilla Petraites

Colourist: Marco Lesko

Letterer: Marshall Dillon

Cover: Addison Duke & Mike Norton

Publisher: AfterShock Comics

Brilliant Trash #4 escalates the tensions from the previous issue, opening with more of Zhen’s troubling memories flooding into Kennedy’s head. Heller and Kennedy make it to Lifespan Inc., and it does not take long before Kennedy (with Zhen’s knowledge) comes into conflict with Lifespan’s CEO, Jay Cromwell. Exposed to the cruel truths behind Lifespan’s goals, Kennedy and Heller suddenly find themselves the target of super-powered infiltrators, hell-bent on capturing Kennedy for themselves. Can Heller be a true superhero and save the day, or is he too loyal to Cromwell?

Minor Spoilers Follow!

This is an action-packed issue, and does an admirable job of ratcheting up the tension. Opening with more of Zhen’s memories, now slowly spilling into Kennedy’s conscious mind, we learn about Zhen’s altruistic motivations, and the money-centric plans of Cromwell. Back in the present, Kennedy and Heller reach the ostentatious Lifespan headquarters, and things quickly descend into chaos. Kennedy is back on top sarcastic form, and wisely tells Cromwell where to stick his offer of employment. The moment is interrupted by an attack from within; more ‘god hackers’ with an impressive array of powers, hiding amongst Cromwell’s own staff. Kennedy is their target, and that leaves Heller with a choice. Defend Kennedy, and the children that Lifespan have locked up, or listen to Cromwell, who he has been passively obeying since this story started. Heller makes his choice, which intriguingly may have been assisted by one of the children, and a super-powered royal rumble takes place. The issue ends on this cliff-hanger high note, and it is an excellent lead up to Brilliant Trash #5.

"brillianttrash4_1"

Brilliant Trash #4 is a definite increase in both pace and dynamic action from the previous issue, and continues the building of Heller as character. It seems he is, after all, a good man, and whether he was prompted into action by an outside force or not, he does recognise the wrong course of action. The writing from Tim (and Steve) Seeley is on point in this issue; Kennedy is her biting, sarcastic self, and is aware enough to not fall for Cromwell’s PR-laden silver tongue. Even the hackers get some gloriously unhinged dialogue, not to mention an interesting array of abilities. There are even a few sly digs at 21st century America, and although not quite as prevalent as it was in the first issue, the return to form is welcome. This issue also wins points for highlighting how super strength alone won’t stop a bullet to the head. The fight scene itself stands apart by having the additional filter of Heller’s idealised view of himself as a hero from the 1940s/50s, but with all the violence and bad language from ‘real life’ 2018. Just in case you were wondering, it’s great. The children locked away in Lifespan also get a chance for revenge, and although extremely disturbing, it feels like something they have earnt after their earlier treatment.

"brillianttrash4_2"

This brings us to the art, again provided by Priscilla Petraites. Apart from the clear, bright and well-assembled panels that have become part of this series, this issue incorporates Heller’s idealised view of an old-school superhero; Petraites implements this with aplomb, adjusting the style perfectly, and redrawing the characters to match the aesthetic. The action flows well, and the brutal consequences of superpowers is rendered in gory detail. Marco Lesko compliments and contributes to this with the colour palette, using simpler, muted colours for Heller’s vision, whilst using various filters for other important effects, like the sepia for flashbacks. This also includes bursts of bright colour to highlight important or action-packed panels, making them stand out from the page. Marshall Dillon provides the lettering, making sure dialogue is clear and easily read, whilst also making sure that the entertaining 1950’s style superhero noises (including a good use of POW!) are used liberally. Overall, this is a nice change from traditional formatting, giving the issue some nice touches. Addison Duke and Mike Norton provide the cover for this issue, giving us a hint of Heller’s heroic moment (including the old-school artwork). It’s also a nice reminder of the contrast between what would be the bloody reality of using superpowered abilities and the more sanitised version of stories past. Overall, the art team have done an excellent job with this issue, and it is nice to see inventive features that make Brilliant Trash #4 stand out. This issue also features a preview of the compilation Shock, coming soon from AfterShock Comics.

Brilliant Trash #4 is an exciting continuation of the story, with dynamic action, good pacing, and entertaining writing. It will be interesting to see where events lead after the ending, and what is in store for the characters in the future.

Brilliant Trash #4 is available now from AfterShock Comics, at any good retailer.

Overall: 9/10

;
