Death's Door follows the trial and tribulations of a soul reaper, crow, as you progress through a series of puzzle-filled and action-packed levels. You play as a crow who has a job to get souls from creatures you encounter. Your job soon becomes a massive adventure.

As the crow reaper, you have assigned missions where you must collect the souls. The game starts in a sombre mood in a world lacking colour apart from the bright red sword you carry. However, before you know it the levels are filled with colours and you roam a plush world. The game does a fantastic job to tread between sombreness and being upbeat too.

"deathsdoor1"

The game starts with minimal instructions. I enjoyed this as it allows the player to explore and get used to the game. However, before you can do that, you have your first boss battle which turns into a hack and slash. You use the trusty bright red sword to kill the swathes of enemies that you encounter. The game shifts from dungeons that are a mix of hack and slash to dungeons full of puzzles. The game manages to make both gameplay elements enjoyable and challenging. Each level, puzzle and enemy get progressively more difficult, the instructions and assistance are kept to a minimum so it's up to the player to figure out the nuances of the game. While this seems subtle, it makes the game much richer, and the gameplay experience is gripping. I found it difficult to stop playing the game once I started.

The bosses are amazing; there is a real sense of accomplishment when you beat them. The bosses are a strange combination of weird, funny, and just plain odd. They are wonderfully rendered and full of detail.

"deathsdoor2"

I have to say I love the interconnected nature of each level. This gives a real feel that you are in a singular world and this helps to tie story elements too. Puzzles and unreachable sections become open as you progress through the game. The game does challenge the player to figure out what is available to do throughout the game.

The story is left purposely vague, and you will gather small morsels of information as you progress through levels and bosses. This helps to build up suspense, intrigue and tension. Each level helps to uncover more detail and builds the story into something of interest. The story has a mix of twists and turns with a beautiful soundtrack that helps to hammer the underlying theme.

"deathsdoor3"

The NPCs and your interactions act as the humour in the game and provide light-heartedness to the sombreness in the game, they also help drive the narration of the game too.

As this game is an indie game, there aren't any voice-overs. This is the only thing I think is missing for me, but the gameplay and story make up for it.

"deathsdoor4"

Death's Door combines a wonderful action-based game with a whole host of puzzles to solve. It has a brilliant mix of hack and slash, a beautifully crafted world that is intriguing and a joy to explore. Every aspect of the game has been designed impeccably, every small element including level design should be applauded. It's a wonderful game that excels in all elements: gameplay, story, music score and fun. I thoroughly enjoyed the game from start to end, I just found the game design and gameplay refreshing and such a joy.

“When I first discovered Kynseed, I immediately wanted to find out more about the team behind it,” said Sir Ian Livingstone. “I reached out to Neal and Charlie in 2020 and learned that they were former members of the Fable team at Lionhead. To my mind, Kynseed was a game with incredible potential, and I wanted to help them bring their vision to the world. There is so much to do when playing Kynseed, from exploring, questing, foraging, farming, and crafting to thrilling combat with strange creatures. The combat alone deserves to be a game in itself! I hope people will enjoy Neal and Charlie’s beautifully-crafted game because what they have developed is something rather special.”

God of War Ragnarök continues from the last game, where you are immersed in the immersive story of Kratos and Atreus. For those who haven't played God of War or can't remember the plot from the last game, a handy recap gives you an overview of the last; game which was much needed by me.

Ragnarök on the PS5 does utilise the power of the console, and from the first action, you see the world of God of War in stunning detail from the characters, level design, enemies, and surroundings are precise and pristine. It takes your breath away, and throughout the, entirety of the game, you are surprised and just in awe of the fantastic screenshot-laden game. I mean, the first impressions do; set the tone for the whole game, and it doesn't disappoint. It's very hard; to find any visual defects in the game; the landscapes and the variety of environments are stunning. I loved the transition from dark colosseum-like structures to open-world beaches, underwater levels, and much more. The game seamlessly brings the player through the story to playable parts, the game has a more immersive feel, and you feel a part of the story.

"godofwarragnarok1"

The cinematics throughout the game is further enhanced by the wonderful music score and sound effects. The superb music enhances every boss fight and cinematic piece. This is enhanced through the controller's haptic feedback, thinking of extra texture throughout the game.

Gameplay centres on using Kratos in this sandboxed environment which isn't an open world. This, means that levels are very structured, and God of War has made intricate levels that are wonderful to explore and find things. Levels are even more intriguing when you must use Atreus and work as a team to solve puzzles and progress further in the world. I didn't feel burdened and bored at any point when doing missions or side missions which just; made the game more enjoyable.

"godofwarragnarok5"

You can build your skill tree and upgrade your armour and weapons to customise; to your play style. The combat is superb; levelling up helps you get additional combos and move sets.

The weapon choices do give a richer; and deeper gameplay feel. Each weapon will affect how you play and how you level it up. I loved the diverse power-up options. The shields are intriguing; some shields are designed as big huge shields that; block, whereas others are more nimble and rely on parries.

"godofwarragnarok2"

Boss fights add another depth to the gameplay; you fight a mixture of Gods, Creatures, and the undead. Each boss battle requires you to approach the fight strategically, and button-bashing won't help! Some of the bosses are huge and impressive in scale. The mini-bosses and random bosses appear throughout the exploration of the world.

Game Length and playtime will be up to 40 hours, but this really depends on how many of the side quests; and if you decide to collect every trinket in the game. This, is a ballpark figure, and if you are taking your time as I did, it's easily a much longer and richer experience. There is a real timeless quality to the exploration in the game; it never seems like a chore; this includes the side missions. The side missions are as rewarding and interesting as the main missions too!

"godofwarragnarok3"

Graphic Fidelity Modes:

Resolution mode: 4k @ 30 FPS

Performance mode: 60 FPS

Performance Mode with High Frame Rate: 4k @ 40 FPS

Frame Rate Mode: 120 FPS

"godofwarragnarok4"

It's hard to find a more complete game in terms of gameplay, storytelling, and just all-out fun. It stays faithful to the storytelling and general awesomeness of God of War (2018) but is bigger, bolder and; is a beautiful next step in the journey of God of War. God of Ragnarök has this wonderful cinematic element that underpins the entire game, the transitions from a narrative-based story to solving puzzles and ultimately beating huge enemies. The game has this beautiful flow, and I ended up losing hours in the game where I was so immersed that I didn't feel the time go by. Ragnarök achieves this wonderful timeless immersion through fantastic level design, great storytelling, believable characters, stunning visuals, and amazing action rolled into one. The buddy team of Kratos and Atreus just makes the story and gameplay more involved to the player without making it seem like a standalone one-player.

Overall: 9.5/10

Developer: FromSoftware

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X (Reviewed)|S

Genre: Action, RPG

Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment

Elden Ring is the long-awaited latest release from FromSoftware. FromSoftware is most notable for their Dark Souls game which is brutally tough and unforgiving. Elden Ring follows in the footsteps of its predecessor, but the game provides an open-world experience with this action RPG title. It's not a total departure from the Souls franchise but the next evolution in the gaming series.

"eldenring1"

It must be noted that the gaming experience in terms of graphic fidelity and glitches may vary from system to system. On the Xbox Series X, I have had no game-breaking bugs in my playthrough, I have put approximately fifty hours into the game, and I haven't finished it yet. The visuals and the game, in general, is stunning; and I experienced a very little; slowdown during the majority of my playthrough. During my playthrough, I did notice some popup of and the odd elements of slowdown; but this was minor in the grand scheme of things and didn't detract from the game. The Xbox Series X supports two graphical modes: quality mode, which supports 4K native with a frame rate of 40-45 FPS, and performance mode, which targets 50-60 FPS at a lower resolution.

Elden Ring comprises the classic elements of an RPG - talk to NPCs, level up, kill enemies and progress on to big huge boss fights. A huge open world is your backdrop. I have to say the open world of Elden Ring is amazing; there are tons of quests to do and lots of items to find strewn all over the world. The graphical fidelity is superb, and the variety in different areas gives you a sense of awe. Some of the scenery is jaw-dropping, and the use of lighting effects is fantastic. I love the initial surprise and change in scenery in each distinct section of the map.

"eldenring2"

Gameplay and play style is dictated by the character build: strength builds, magic build or stealth build. There are numerous ways to play the game, but your first run-through of the game will give you only a taste. The choice of build and what you level up does affect your gameplay directly as knights will go for head-on combat, whereas mages and magicians will cast at a distance. The feel of the game is reminiscent of Souls, melee; combat requires skill to understand enemy attacks, avoid them and attack the right point. This ability to understand your enemy applies even more to the amazing boss battles. Bosses in Elden Ring are unmatched by any other game; they are huge and difficult. The bosses are extremely rewarding when you do defeat them. It must be noted; you must prepare to die over and over again and to run away too! This game is a tough slog for new players and will require persistence. Your playstyle will be affected by the trinkets and NPCs you encounter. Depending on what items you pick and NPCs you talk to, you will get different items. The items, weapons and armour will directly affect your skills and attributes; weapons will require certain stats to wield them. The game has numerous combinations and permutations. It's a learning experience with lots of trial and error.

"eldenring3"

Elden Ring is a tough game, but the open-world nature allows for players to explore and gather more items when they become stuck. I found the Souls games much tougher as there was less variety when you became stuck. Elden Ring's open world allows you to find new areas, bosses and dungeons to explore before coming back to the main game. Fifty hours in, and I have only got through maybe half of the game; the game is huge in scale and endeavour.

The cinematics, art, sound, music score and voice acting is amazing. George R. R. Martin helped with the story and the general mythology of the world. There are elements around the world that have George's stamp on them for sure.

"eldenring4"

The FromSoftware game is known for its rich community features. Elden Ring supports a whole host of online options that you will unlock as you play through the game. You can play co-op with friends or invade other people's games, or be invaded. The co-op modes and invasion modes add another layer to this stunning game. All these options can be turned off as well if you prefer a pure solo run. The ability to leave notes, helpful or not, is still available, which is novel at first but gets tiresome fairly quick.

Elden Ring is a wonderful open-world game that; is a breath of fresh air to the genre. Its lack of a narrative-led story where you are spoon-fed every element is quite a change. Everything is stripped to enhance the game and the gameplay. The emphasis throughout the game is one of discovery, dying and exploring this beautiful world. It's extremely tough that requires persistence and understanding various combat and item mechanics. I loved this game, it's amazing, and I still have lots to play!

Overall: 9.5/10
Developer: Guerrilla Games

Platforms: PS4, PS5 (Reviewed)

Genre: Action, RPG

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment

Horizon Forbidden West is the follow-up to the stunning and amazing game that is Horizon Zero Dawn. Horizon Zero Dawn was released in 2017 and is probably one of my favourite PS4 titles; it is a stunning game. If you are new to Horizon, I'd recommend playing the original game if you haven't. Forbidden West story follows on from where Zero Dawn left off. One nice touch I liked was the quick overview of Zero Dawn before you begin Forbidden West. Think of a Netflix recap to help refresh all our memories. You play as Aloy (The Nora Warrior), the protagonist in this huge open-world behemoth of an RPG action game.

The cinematics are fantastic; Horizon has always managed to negotiate the fine line of being a fantastic game that feels like a movie that has the right balance of story to the game. A lush open world that extends endlessly makes the game seem never-ending. The array of characters, side missions, errands, jobs, and various other missions also give the sense of a living and breathing world. Aloy is just planted in this world to figure out all the nuances and what is going on. Every part of the world has something to do. These can vary from ancient ruins, new machines, hidden cities, hidden loot to rare weapons or armour. Despite having a huge map, the world is segmented into regions that are further subdivided; to make the game seem more manageable and not overwhelming. The scale of the game is massive.

"horizon_fw1"

The voice-overs and acting are superb. Every piece of dialogue and cutscene is engrossing, which adds to the story. Forbidden West continues the fantastic storytelling from Zero Dawn and improves on it. It's all more polished; the sound, the voice, the lights, and the cinematics are superb. There are some breathtaking and jaw-dropping moments in the game.

Game mechanics are an action intensive puzzle-based RPG with a rich levelling up system; that allows you to customise your play to what suits you. Character levelling up is achieved; through side missions and the main quest, you can play stealth, an all-out action build or somewhere in between. It depends where you spend your skill tree points and what you prefer doing. My character build was a mix of stealth and tank build. The game has improved the levelling up mechanics, and a real focus can be seen in the combat mechanics. Everything gameplay-wise is richer and just more responsive. It enhances Zero Dawn but gives new life to the game too. There are new machines and each machine; looks superb.

"horizon_fw2"

PS5 graphics do support higher textures and detail throughout the game, in levels where it's dark or underwater; the lighting is immense. The environments are stunning, detailed, and wonderful to explore. The game does support 4K 30 fps and at 60 fps at a lower resolution on the PS5. The dual sense is used to give richer sounds and enhance the in-game action. The haptic feedback for certain game mechanics also enriches the gameplay; these may be small things but again make the game even more immersive. For example, you will get a new tool, the pullcaster, early on, which adds another tool to Aloy's arsenal. The pullcaster tool uses haptic feedback to give a real sensation that you are pulling and prying doors open. Haptic feedback is integrated throughout the game, from the parkour elements to battles the dinosaurs. When you are climbing the haptics, kick in too to make the game more immersive.

One thing to note is that SSD performance has been optimised for Forbidden West the load times are significantly reduced compared to Zero Dawn, and the game doesn't get any slowdown from loading. Once you are in the game, the level and scene transition flow superbly.

"horizon_fw3"

The big huge bosses are still present in this game which make for amazing action-filled gameplay. The scanning of the bosses using the focus is even more detailed than Zero Dawn. Bosses' defects are presented much clearer to Aloy. This extra level of detail makes the boss fights more compelling and in-depth. You will have to use your wits, guns and tools to beat these amazing huge bosses. The boss fights are next level.

I did have the odd graphical issue (disappeared after the patch) and some issues with collision detections in the map. A few times, I got stuck under the map, but this was a rare event, and with regular auto-saves, you were back the last save before you knew it. It's hard to find fault; I have to nit-pick and pick tiny issues to draw criticisms. I have put more than 60 hours into the game, and I'm loving; it.

"horizon_fw4"

The game gives a rich, deep, immersive adventure to the player. Horizon Forbidden West is a work of art; it impresses on so many fronts, graphical, story-telling and cinematics spring to mind at first. There are lots of improvements and tweaks compared to the first game. The improved levelling up, improved graphics sounds and richer combat just, to name a few.

The game combines elements of film and games into this hugely immersive experience that is a pure joy to play. Aloy and the cast of characters just bring this dystopian future to life. It's gameplay that is gripping and hard to put down, my favourite game on PS5 by a mile. Forbidden West is more than a worthy sequel to Zero Dawn; it's amazing.

Overall: 9.5/10
Developer: Gearbox Software

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X (Reviewed)|S

Genre: First-person shooter, RPG, Adventure

Publisher: 2K

Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep was originally the 4th instalment of DLC for Borderlands 2. Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure is the release of that DLC as a standalone game. Expect a wonderful Borderlands world where you get to explore plus an excellently narrated story.

Tina Tina's Assault is a first-person shooter in a beautiful world full of orcs, mages, skeletons and a cast of amazing characters that help to drive the narrative of the story. It has that wonderful cel-shaded art style of Borderlands and gameplay. It's an all-action shooter that has some great narration and storytelling that helps drive the story. Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep has fantastic voice acting and humour that helps to drive the game forward. The game oozes personality and humour. An engaging level up system with tons of customisation too.

"dragonkeep1"

The gameplay is just all out hectic action of first-person shooting with extra mayhem. Enemies spawn from every nook and cranny. You must deal with enemies as you wish - melee or shoot them; it's up to you. Your character can be levelled up and customised with your loadout. You can quickly switch between 4 weapons (as you unlock more slots throughout the game), while this may seem like a simple mechanic, it allows you to customise your gameplay to whatever weapons you have and the style you prefer. I love the ability to switch between rifles, shotguns, and bazookas at the hit of one key. It makes the gameplay more enjoyable, and you can cycle through the array of guns you find. You can also upgrade your characters as you please, magic heavy, health heavy, shield heavy etc. The upgrades, collectables, ammo are available easily throughout the world too. I liked the general availability of items whilst playing the game. Enemies drop upgrades too. If you prefer, you can upgrade by collecting cash and buying upgrades. A huge; array of customisations, weapons and mods are available, too much to mention.

"dragonkeep2"

The shooting elements and general gameplay is superb. It's easy to pick up and play and provides a rich gaming experience with multiple ways to play. The shooting mechanics are spot-on, the movement and navigation are smooth, and there weren't any noticeable annoyances with game mechanics on my playthrough. The game is smooth and super fun. It supports 4 players too. It's the chaotic fun I love and the numerous ways you can kill enemies. The level design and gameplay is top tier.

"dragonkeep3"

Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure is a beautifully rendered world. The game wonderfully transitions from being dark to bright to funny while the story unfolds. Narration helps drive the game forward and provides a wonderful rapport between the cast of characters which helps feel the world is alive and breathing. You feel you are immersed and part of this world. A wonderful mix of humour, storytelling helps drive you through the game. It's tons of fun; I highly recommend it.

The game is available for £7.99; prices may vary by format.

Overall: 8/10
Developer: Fossil Games

Platform: PC (Steam)

Genre: Action, RPG

Publisher: Hound Picked Games

Sunshine Manor is an 8-bit retro horror adventure from Fossil Games. It's a prequel to Camp Sunshine which was a cult hit. The game is a mix of dungeon crawler and story-driven RPG. At first, the bright and wonderfully detailed game looks fantastic and does the 8-bit genre justice. The game does have a spooky and eerie underlying theme that is ubiquitous. It's a heavily story-driven narrative that gives context to the Sunshine Manor and why you are there. You have that classic gameplay as you shift through numerous levels of the mansion. The top-down view with fantastically rendered levels gives me a sense of nostalgia but is used by many indie games still. The dungeons are detailed, and each dungeon has its theme. You play as Ada, and you have to go through a series of dungeons with clues to find out what happened in this mansion. Every dungeon, every character and every clue helps to uncover the mystery of the manor.

"sunshinemanor2"

The game has a timeless retro quality that is easy to pick up and play but has enough to keep you entertained for the duration of the game. The storyline is intriguing and adds wonderfully scary and horror themes during the game. Level design is superb and the transition between ordinary and horror levels changes the tone of the game. I loved the unexpected jump scares throughout. The dialogue is superb, and the mix of game mechanics from general dungeon crawling to boss battles adds many variations in gameplay. I love how dark and full of horror the game is. The game executes every element with fantastic detail. We are delighted to be joined by the writer Mark Sable this week. Mark is the writer of many comics including Graveyard of Empires, Grounded, War on Terror and Miskatonic just to name a few. Mark is working on a new project called Chaotic Neutral and we are delighted that we can about it with him today.

Hi Mark, we are so delighted to have you here with us today. We have been fans of your writing since Graveyard of Empires. We are soexcited to chat with you.

I’m delighted to be here! And thank you for the kind words about Graveyard of Empires, that’s a book I’m proud of and it means a lot.

We understand that you are working with Chris Anderson on a new project called Chaotic Neutral; can you tell us all about Chaotic Neutral?

CHAOTIC NEUTRAL is a 48 page comic and RPG adventure rolled into one. Inspired by old school role playing games like D&D, the goal is to capture the weird, wonderful and dangerous fantasy RPGs from the 80s in comic book form. And then let readers become players and interact with the world of the book.

"chaoticneutral2"

Can you tell us about the origins of Chaotic Neutral?

I’ve collected role playing game books for almost as long as I’ve collected comics. I say “collected” because I was extremely shy as a kid, and had a hard time working up the courage to get a group together. So I’d study rulebooks and modules like they were the Talmud, roll up characters and craft these imaginary adventures…but never shared them with anything else.

Flash forward to 2014, when the Fifth Edition of D&D came out. I finally had enough self-confidence to first play, and then run games with strangers and friends. That was a life changing experience – to this day I run a weekly D&D game, and the camaraderie helped get me through the pandemic.

But something felt like it was missing from modern day RPGs. The books were more polished, but also…safer. Old school RPGs had painted covers, but inside was this amazing black and white art. Sometimes it was amateurish, but it was often edgy – with demons and devils – and always weird. It made you feel like anything was possible.

I learned that of fantasy had been watered down as a result of the so-called “Satanic Panic of the 80s”. Religious groups tried to convince parents that games like D&D could corrupt kids souls, and gaming companies folded much like comic companies did with the Comic Code in the 50s.

CHAOTIC NEUTRAL aims to correct that. Our tag line is “They said fantasy roleplaying games were dangerous and they were wrong. But now? Maybe they were right to be afraid!” We’re trying to bring back that edge, and imagine what a comic that would truly scare those fear mongers would be like.

At the same time, it’s not edge for edge’s sake or shock value. While taking inspiration from the old school, this is a book that’s diverse, inclusive and welcoming to the new batch of players that shows like Stranger Things and Critical Role have brought into this wonderful hobby.

Chris Anderson is the perfect artist and co-creator for this book. His work conjures up the weird nature of old school artists like Erol Otus, Dave Trampier and Bill Willingham (yes, the man known best for writing Fables used to do rad drawings for D&D)…but he brings a modern sense of whimsy that helps balance out the darkness and make it accessible for everyone.

"chaoticneutral3"

Ryan Browne is also working on Chaotic Neutral; how did this collaboration come about?

Part of the propaganda of the Satanic Panic were these so-called “Chick Tracts”, pamphlet sized comic-books like “Dark Dungeons” by the late Jack Chick that depicted kids who dabbled in D&D meeting grisly ends. While the main story is told seriously, I wanted to satirize Chick’s work to add to the feeling that CHAOTIC NEUTRAL was an artifact of the 80s. I’m lucky enough to be friends with Ryan, who does humor better than anyone in comics, and it seemed like a the only person who could pull that off.

We understand that Chaotic Neutral will also have trading cards; what can you tell us about these trading cards?

In the early 80s, D&D had these monster trading cards with stats on one side and old school art on the other. We decided to do a modern spin on that by enlisting 9 superstar artists to illustrate some of the classic and original monsters in Issue one of CHAOTIC NEUTRAL. We’ve been lucky enough to enlist Max Dunbar (Dungeons & Dragons), Jeremy Haun (Haunthology), Maan House (Godkillers), Jeff Johnson (Boondocks), Tom Neely (The Humans), Dan Panosian (Slots), Jim Rugg (Mtsryr: Octobriana 1976), Tim Seeley (Money Shot) and Kyle Strahm (Spread) in creating them. They are a true murderers row of talent.

"chaoticneutral4"

As a creator, does the crowdfunding model and dealing directly with the public make the project more special for you rather than using a traditional publishing model?

I work equally as hard on all my comics, but there is something special about the process of crowdfunding. One of the things I’ve always loved about comics is the proximity of fans to creators. I love film, but I could never go up to a convention and meet Martin Scorsese. Comics was welcoming to me as a fan, and I love the opportunity to establish those connections to readers as a creator.

Do you have a favourite Kickstarter reward?

There are some cool stretch goals that haven’t been revealed yet, but my favorite reward connects back to your question about the special bond with the public Kickstarter can create. For a select few backers, I’ve offered to run the adventure in CHAOTIC NEUTRAL live (over Zoom) as Dungeon Master. I’m hoping that will be special for fans, and I personally can’t wait to challenge run them and their characters through the dangers that await inside.

"chaoticneutral5"

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

Just that I know there’s a lot of great comics to choose from, but Chris Anderson and I are offering a unique experience. Whether they are comics readers, role-players or both, we’ve crafted something special for them.

A big thank you to Mark for sitting and chatting with us, we would like to wish Mark and all of his team the best of luck with their Kickstarter.

Feel free to check out the campaign: Chaotic Neutral on Kickstarter.

Eastward is a pixel art 2D action RPG adventure. The game is based; around a world that is slowly decaying. You play as a digger, John, who assists a lost and mysterious girl named Sam. Through this world that is; slowly taking itself apart. A game similar to Eastward would be Little Witch In The Woods or Hyper Light Drifter. Eastward was developed by Pixpil Games and published by Chucklefish.

Eastward is a single-player game where you can go on; a wonderfully exciting adventure. The story revolves around the main character, you, playing as a digger named John, who works around a decaying world and now is accompanied by a girl named Sam. This post-apocalyptic setting sets out an adventure where you; get to come across charming characters, a thrilling story, and the power of using a frying pan to defeat enemies in your way. The opening scene of this game has an amazing; cinematic that sets the adventure you are about to go on.

"eastward1"

The controls to Eastward are very simple. Playing the game on the switch makes it accessible as if you are using a controller. Not many intricate controls are used within the game, which pretty much includes: controls like moving around, interacting with characters, and using your weapon. What is nice about the controls is that when you can interact with people or items, a little bubble with the control pad shows up to indicate you can interact with this item/person. Overall the controls are easy to play.

All the attention towards Eastward is brought upon by the art style that the game is based around. The game has a vibrant, quaint pixel-art landscape that holds such creativity. So much attention is put into the detail of the art style for this game which adds more to the atmosphere. I found myself going through everything in the area to; take a look at the close detail. I enjoy pixelated games very much, and the essence this game captures is so fun and endearing to explore. Small details throughout the game have little animations as well, like the running water or the shine of the metals. Little details bring the game to life. What is so interesting about the art style of this game is that it; is inspired by 90s Japanese animation.

"eastward2"

The soundtrack of Eastward consists of wonderful-sounding instrumental music that plays from scene to scene from transition to transition. I love how, when entering certain areas, the music changes to fit with the; theme of the area. It starts with this mellow piano music which sounds familiar to Stardew Valley’s opening to going to a jazz, funk kind of beat. The music in the game adds more life and compliments the visuals so well. Even the sound effects over the top of the music, like shutting the door and the footsteps makes, the game so much more enticing to play. I love the sound effect of the text bubble when interacting with characters, as it has that reminiscing typewriter sound to it which matches so well with the font of the dialogue. The soundtrack for this game is so immersive, and because of the amazing visuals, it compliments one another, making it so that the world of Eastward; is filled with adventure.

My opinion of this game is; extremely positive. I found this game to be so investing and to be; one that I can come to when wanting to wind down. With the visuals, the sound, and the story, it truly is an adventure; that is full of fun. The story itself is also so intriguing as you can unravel it while exploring the world of Eastward. I also really; enjoyed how you can play both John and Sam to be able to solve various puzzles. The selection of weapons that you have handy makes the fighting even more exciting. What I like about how you can switch between the characters is that either character can be helpful when exploring. For instance, Sam is shorter than John, so she can fit through logs that are too small for John.

"eastward3"

The boss fights in this game are so unique from one another; each boss plays differently and has a theme to itself. The boss battles are what allow you to get an understanding of what you need to upgrade. I enjoy the combat in this game as the progression of each boss battle allows for; the player to get better at using both Sam and John as well as fighting mini monsters on the way to upgrade your items. I find the frying pan; to be my favourite weapon choice, but John comes in handy with loads more. Playing with the weapons isn't difficult, and it is fun to be able to whack objects or set them on fire. You can upgrade your health and weapon damage by meeting this guy in the central town. As you progress through the story, you collect more currency which allows you to buy new weapons; that you can add to your collection.

I find the difficulty of the puzzles to also be well balanced, not making you shoot completely in the dark. I found Daniel and William to be interesting characters in the game, and the railway location reminded me of something from a Studio Ghibli movie. Another thing I love about the gameplay is how there is a little mix of everything in the game; you can cook food by putting ingredients together. The one scene where Sam and John drive a car in the water was something I did not expect. What is also so helpful about this game is the objectives menu, the map and other things that help you on your journey. I found this RPG to be so charming and took up so much of my time as it got me invested in wanting to uncover the story. Travel the world, and upgrade the character; to be able to progress further. I also love how you can play a game within this game. The attention to detail is just outstanding.

"eastward4"

If; you want to play a game where you get to explore a post-apocalyptic world through the travels of a digger and his sidekick. Then make your way and start; your adventure with this captivating, beautiful, outstanding work of art. This game captures a true essence of a pixelated-RPG game that is so fun to play and in some way relaxing even with all the monster fighting. So, if you want to indulge in this whimsical adventure, then go check out Eastward!
