“Enchanting Matsuri”

Hello everyone, I am back once again with yet another SoKawaii review. This time we take a look at what was included in July's box, which just like the Nihon Box is all themed around celebrating the summer matsuri season. The products in this box are from Sanrio, San-X, Sumikko Guarashi and Pokémon. So let’s get started on our usual description of what SoKawaii is and what they have to offer you!

For those of you that don’t know – SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 5 to 7 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep each month. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media accounts. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts, particularly their Instagram one – https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

“Dreamy Creatures”

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another ComicBuzz review! In todays’ post I took a look into what was included in SoKawaii’s June Box. The theme they ran with this time is “Dreamy Creatures”, which features six products from a number of licenses. Including Studio Ghibli, Sanrio, Pokémon and Kirby. So let’s get started on our usual description of what SoKawaii is and what they have to offer you!

For those of you that don’t know – SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts, particularly their Instagram one – https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

So our first item this month is surely worth the price of the box alone, and that is the official Totoro plush from My Neighbour Totoro. Studio Ghibli merch is not cheap folks, especially on this side of the World. I have seen this exact plush go for £45 in HMV - and it’s not a massive plush by any regards! So for me, everything else in this box I may have just gotten for free cause this plush was definitely the cream of the crop. It’s super fluffy, plump, stands freely on its own and is an official merch. Although it doesn’t have its toothy, almost creepy looking grin - it is still adorable as heck and perfect to be put on display alongside your Studio Ghibli film collection.

Moving on we head on over to the world of Pokémon, with this highly adorable Pikachu masking tape. This item was available in four designs, all from the Pokemon Sepia Graffiti collection. Looking into it now, this is a fairly old release, as it first came out back in 2016. However the designs are still just as adorable all the same, I wouldn’t say no to another item from this collection being added again in a future box.

We are now onto our second Pokémon item, with this very large Face Towel. With two designs available at random in every box, one of which will feature both Pikachu and Eevee enjoying a relaxing nap. This super soft towel is quite large and is more of a hand towel in my eyes, than a face towel. It looks like 8 times the size of a face cloth and the picture I took of it above is with the towel folded over 3 times!

We are now back to stationary with this next item, featuring Kirby. June’s box saw everyone getting a set of two limited edition KIrby clear file folders, which were available in four regional designs. Including Tokyo, Osaka, Okinawa and Fujisan, with Kirby posing at each location. Now this is another older collection, as this was originally released last April. However it is quite adorable, but what does everyone do with their clear files? Do you display them, and if so how? Reach out to us on either Twitter or Facebook and tag us in your posts, to show us your clear file display ideas.

Our final two items are both from Sanrio, the largest of which is the My Melody circular floor mat in the picture above. Which is just one of three designs that was available at random in every box, the other two included Cinnamoroll and Hello Kitty. This mat is 50x50cm, probably amongst the smallest you can find and would be perfect to have at your computer desk. Better yet it has numerous anti slip bumps underneath, so it shouldn't go sliding about the place when you walk on it. The upside has a printed design of one of the three characters included, with the name in pastel print and a quote about the character underneath. This item was released in 2020, going by the trademark on the mat. It’s nice and soft, but I could easily see this getting stained very quickly and I’m unsure how machine washable it is. So best be careful with this one.

And our final item is a small Hello Kitty storage box. This clip-closed box would easily work as a small lunch box, for storing your washi/masking tape, for hair ties or even your medication as long as you don’t have small kids in the house that will be quickly drawn to such a cute box as this one. It also looks like a classic vintage Hello Kitty design, one that is sure to last the ages.

There we have it folks, that was Junes’ SoKawaii box. This month had a good mix of items, from decorative, storage, household and stationary from some iconic franchises. Now let’s get on to the all important information, for how YOU can begin your own subscription, as well as a special discount code just for you guys.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. SoKawaii are back to shipping their boxes via Japan Post, so delivery may take a number of weeks. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 Month – $35.00 (€29.00mo roughly)

3 Months – $33.50 (€28.00mo roughly)

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)

Better yet, here is a $3 discount code that you can use on your first box by clicking this link!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you enjoyed June’s box, then just wait for July’s! It’s theme is “Enchanting Matsuri”, which will feature a number of items from Sumikko Gurashi, Sanrio and Rilakkuma. That box is already sold out and on the way to me and will include a Sumikko Gurashi electric hand fan! Shame the Irish heatwave has already been and gone! Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for – so go have your say now! Also make sure and use that special discount code I left you all above!

https://www.sokawaii.com/

‘Beastial New Year’

Hello all, look what finally turned up in the post! My Nihon Box from January this year, it was such a long wait for this one as it was shipped just before Japan Post resumed their normal service. So let’s begin with the usual spiel of what this service offers!

Much like SoKawaii, Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

Our first item this month comes straight from San-X, with their Rilakkuma tray made from bamboo fibre. A more sustainable material that has become very popular with brands over the last few years, due to how quickly the plant grows and the fact it doesn’t need any pesticides. This tray has a lovely print on the front of Rilakkuma, Korilakkuma and Kiiroitori dressed in their colorful yukatas as they enjoy a night filled with fireworks and tasty treats. The ideal way to enjoy a matsuri festival in Japan. This tray also has a trademark on the bottom right for 2021, meaning this tray was only just recently released during this summer.

Next up is our Pokémon item from the Pocket Monsters Sepia Graffiti collection. We actually received another item from this very same collection in last month’s box, with a washi tape. Now I am unsure as to how old this collection actually is, as I have seen on other websites that the washi tape was first released back in 2018. However this month we have gone a little more upscale, with this handy pouch case. This pouch is actually really well made, has a tanned look to it and you would almost expect that it was made entirely out of leather. The design on the front features an Eevee and Pikachu, as they do a bit of window shopping. As you can see, Eevee is taking interest in the three evolution stones on display in the window. Behind them is a cobbled street, with an old style phone box and lamp post. The whole look to this design, gives off a feel of old London in the last century. The script on the front is also pretty charming as well, as it gives a very brief description of the idea of Pokémon. Now the pouch is snug enough, you would certainly fit in a normal of pens and pencils, perhaps some make up or cash envelopes. Unfortunately it was too snug to fit my phone, so you would want a very slim model to fit into this pouch.

Now we move on to Sanrio, with this pair of My Melody Kitchen sponges. Now this item was in fact available in two different designs, with the iconic Hello Kitty being the other pair you could receive. These die cut sponges are just adorable, that it would almost be a shame to use them to wash a mound of dirty dishes. However they are indeed practical and will certainly get you out of a pinch if you don’t intend on making a special trip to the shop.

Where or where was this several weeks back during the big Irish heat wave! Honestly could have done with this a while back. So we now move onto the Sumikko Gurashi part of our July box, with this electric hand fan. This fan would be the perfect accessory to accompany you on a trip during a hot summer's day. It’s design is made to resemble an ice cream cone, with the characters of Sumikko Gurashi acting as the toppings. All you do is slide the cover over to reveal the fan, with a switch on the side to turn it on. Hopefully I can get better use out of this next year!

And now we end with our final item, a Little Twin Stars plush. You could have gotten either Kiki or Lala in your July box, both of which are dressed in their light Summery Yukatas. Of which you can see I got Kiki in his blue yukata. This quality looking plush is well made, no loose threads or fabric. Well stuffed and stitched together. This could even be safe for young children to have. It is also a lovely addition for all plush collectors.

There we have it folks, that was Julys’ SoKawaii box. This month had a good mix of items, from a seasonal plush, a hand fan, a Pokémon pouch and some homeware from some iconic franchises. Now let’s get on to the all important information, for how YOU can begin your own subscription, as well as a special discount code just for you guys.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get.

January’s box theme was ‘Beastial New Year’, which also marks the year of the Ox according to the zodiac calendar. The theme ties in with the Netflix show ‘Beastars’, which became a fan favorite when Season One was first released back in 2019. To which we received two items of merchandise from the show, including a Foaming Soap Dispenser - which is pictured above on the left. This pump bottle features the main wolf Legoshi, with the shows logo. Great to have when you buy the refillable bags of liquid soap. We also received a Legoshi plush as well, which is a nice addition to the box. As you don’t see many Beastars merch here in the west.

Moving on, we received a Demon Slayer mini figure from the Hikkake collection. Hikkake translates to Hooked, which is exactly what this figure series represents. Each character hooks onto a box underneath, with three characters available including Tanjiro, Nezuko and Zenitsu. This is just series one of these figures, you can buy the rest of them and more from Dekai Anime at the moment through this link: https://tinyurl.com/zjjz2mx6

Next up is this tiny little glass hanging mascot, featuring a Tanuki and Kitsune. This very well detailed figure pictured above is from the PUTITTO Tanuki to Kitsune collection. With five different figures to collect, they are from a very popular Japanese online manga series that tells the story of these two mischievous creatures from Japanese folklore. Its very cute and is certainly a series I would be interested in getting into. Although the figure is far from practical, it would be cute to have on your glass shelf or on any display glassware you might have.

Now in this box there was a note saying that when my box was being prepared to ship my food item - the Monaka chestnut and mochi, went out of date. So they kindly replaced the item with the above two, which on the left I am unsure as to what exactly it was. I was guessing some kind of mochi maybe? While on the right was the brown sugar soybean sticks that I really enjoyed from a previous box. Unfortunately neither of which I can eat, as both items went out of date a month or so before arriving in the post. Which was very disappointing, but I appreciate the thought.

Following on from our food items, we received a miso soup bowl featuring an image of Mount Fuji. This item has been entirely made in Japan, with a black background finish on the outside of the bowl, with images of sakura, clouds and the iconic Fuji-san. The only issue I have with it, is that it appears to be made of hard plastic. Which gives it a bit of a cheap feel to it. An interesting fact though is that Mt. Fuji is one of the symbols that represent a New Year in Japan. It is said that if you dream of the Mountain on the first sleep of the year, it will bring you good luck!

Another authentic item made exclusively in Japan, is the above Tako - Flying Kite. This is another New Years tradition in Japan, where you fly a kite with a traditional design on it. It can also be used as decoration, but I hope to be able to fly it one day. Perhaps pack it in my luggage and bring it with me on my eventual trip to Tokyo. Its very small, about the size of an A5 page. Little to no weight to it and was available in a number of different designs. The one I received featured a number of Gods in a boat, which is the image of the 7 Lucky Gods on a Treasure ship. Also known as the Takarabune. It’s interesting looking up the image of the kite you receive in your box, so you can discover the history of kites design.

The last item we all received in January’s box is a Pikachu Bento box. We now have a matching set, as we received a pair of Pokémon chopsticks and a case in last November’s box. This super adorable bento box, features the iconic yellow mascot's face on the front of the box.

Now if you are a regular subscriber, you will also receive a bonus item every few months. This is a very welcome surprise every time it happens and I have had my eye on this collection ever since it came out. The bonus item I received is a canvas tote bag from the Cardcaptor Sakura and Little Twin Stars collaboration that was released in August 2018. This bag features the iconic Cardcaptor Sakura in her new outfit from the Clear Card series and Kero. Both are drawn in the same design as Little Twin Stars siblings, Kiki & Lala. This bag even folds up into the inner pocket, into a very easily transportable size.

And that is a recap of January’s box, just five months late is all. Now I am still missing February's box, so expect another recap review in the coming weeks as well as new reviews for all upcoming Nihon and SoKawaii boxes as they arrive. This box had a good array of goods, for both anime and food fans. As we get a plush, a figure, some traditional and iconic items as well. Such a good box and well worth buying if you can.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

https://www.nihonbox.com/en
Happy New Year everyone! I’m back again with the first So Kawaii box of 2020, with the theme “Winter Celebrations”. This months’ box is filled with more useful, cute and official goods from Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura and Sanrio! So shall we get started?!

First off, a massive welcome back to all you regular ComicBuzz readers, it’s great to see you again!! To does of you that are new here, welcome! I hope you all had a wonderful and restful Christmas season and I am sure you are all back to the grind again with work, college and everyday life! So sit back and I hope you enjoy this little unboxing I have for you. To kick things off, I am reviewing once again a new So Kawaii box. I have been subscribed to this subscription service for close to a year now and I have been loving it! So Kawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (Japanese for cute). They create monthly boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 6 to 8 cute & useful items exclusive in Japan, pack them up in this very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently appearing in Japanese arcades. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

First off we have some very handy products for around the house. Beginning with our Little Twin Stars mist bottle from Sanrio. This was available in two designs, with the other being My Melody. Let me know in the comments below which version you got in your box! Now I am currently growing some dwarf daffodils on my sitting room windosill and they are doing so well - I haven’t killed them yet which is amazing!! So I am going to use my mist bottle to water my flowers. You can also of course use this to train your pets to not scratch the furniture, as a disinfectant bottle for cleaning, or even as a salon water mist bottle if you are great at cutting hair. You might even be able to put salad dressing in it if you want to liven up your veggies.

Now I am actually going to categorise this second product as a household item, as it’s a Suppi squishy mascot from Cardcaprtor Sakura. Now this is also available in two designs, with Kero Chan being the other one. Personally I am delighted to get Suppi, as I have never seen other Suppi merchandise over here before. You might be asking why I would say this is a household item, well everyone is bound to get stressed at times from life, work, school etc. So when you get home all worked up over the negative things going on in your day, just squeeze this toy as much as you want and it all just starts to melt away. It reforms really well after you vent out your frustrations, the only issue I have though is the smell. Mine had a very strong rubber odour which does tend to dissipate a little if you keep it out of the packaging.

The next product I pulled out from the box was this very useful Gudetama 2020 planner! This is just adorable, with plenty of unique and seasonal designs used throughout the book, it also comes in a protective sleeve and is just a bit bigger than pocket sized. This Gudetama planner is available in all boxes this month!

My second Gudetama item was this Winter Snowman Plush doll, a pretty big item that took up half the box. It sits well on my shelf, so it has good balance. Very soft and well padded, can be a great decoration or cuddly toy. I love the knitted hat on it, it is so well made and is great to see a different fabric being used to make the character stand out more. It is done in the same way you would generally build a snowman by adding old scarves and hats to it. I wish I had the same hat as Gudetama! This Snowman plush is available in 7 Sanrio characters, including Hello Kitty, My Melody and Pochacco.

Next we have some more stationary in the form of this very cute Pikachu Girly Collection Notebook. Although not stated on the flyer inside, it was announced on the So Kawaii Facebook page just before Christmas as a Bonus Item for all boxes. This Pikachu notebook is available in two designs, but left me a bit disappointed. Although the cover is adorable, the inside pages are just ruled with no page designs. I feel like this was a missed opportunity on The Pokémon Company's part, as it makes the book just that little bit cheap and generic. On the plus side, you can never have too many notebooks really.

And next we have our third and last Sanrio item, in the form of this adorable Cinnamoroll mug! I am amazed it made it all the way over from Japan without a single crack! Now if you read Japanese then all well and good, but if you don’t make sure and read the description on the flyer as this gorgeous looking mug is hand wash only. Don’t risk it by putting it in a microwave or dishwasher, as you wouldn’t want this porcelain mug to shatter. It is very cute though and is sure to cheer you up weather you sip your tea from it or a hot toddy.

And lastly we have our Sailor Moon item with this gashapon figurine. With three designs available including Princess Serenity, Sailor Venus and Jupiter. I got the Sailor Venus one in my box, which looks well made and was very simple to assemble. I especially like the ball joint that was used to attach the head to the body, and the figure also has good balance on the stand. And there you have it folks, January's box and the first of 2020.
