We are delighted to be joined by Matt Smith; Matt is the creator of Barbarian Lord. Matt has worked on numerous comics including, Folklords, Lake Of Fire, Metal Quest and Jim Henson’s Storyteller.

Hi Matt, it's such a thrill to have you here with us.

How did the opportunity come about for you to be involved in the Hellboy universe again?

As I remember it, I was out raking leaves and listening to music on my headphones when I saw a notification that I got a message––which turned out to be Mike Mignola asking if I was interested in drawing a Hellboy story he was working on about an ancient werewolf hunter. After taking a beat to get my head around how this could have happened, I replied that I was very interested in all of those words. That story turned out to be the one-shot "Long Night at Goloski Station."

Did you read the novel Hellboy: The Bones of Giants?

Many times! I was already a longtime fan of Norse mythology, and so was on it when it came out. I love mythology and folklore in general, but the Norse myths and sagas have been the focus of my interest for ages. I haven’t read the novel recently, as my sister borrowed it and lost it. That’s right, I’m letting everyone know what happened to my treasured copy of the book.

What can you tell us about Hellboy: The Bones of Giants #1?

When [co-writer] Christopher Golden sent me the script, I was immediately impressed with how he adapted the length and format. Issue #1 gets moving right away, and we’re up in the mountains and in streets of Stockholm, being reunited with some familiar characters and meeting some new ones. It’s pretty lean and fast-moving, but without losing the great atmosphere of the book. [Colorist] Chris O’Halloran, who worked with me on Folklords but is new to the Hellboy world, did a hell of a job on colors. I’m really interested to hear what fellow Hellboy fans make of this first issue.

What is it like working with Mike and Christopher?

I had the good fortune to meet them both at a Boston comic con where they offered me the project, and they couldn’t have been more welcoming. Since then, it’s stayed on that same line. This had the potential to be pretty daunting, with me being a huge fan of the character, Mike’s art in general, and this particular Norse-steeped story––but Mike, Chris, and the strong editorial team at Dark Horse took the edge off for sure.

Did you get a full script for each issue?

I did. I can’t remember now if I got them all at once––I don’t think I did. I think they came along as I was working, which was fun to look forward to. I knew the story well, but to see how Chris adapted it for comics was really cool.

How good is your knowledge of Norse mythology?

It’s certainly not at an academic level, but I know my myths pretty well. I love the source material and also collect films, comics, and records that are influenced by them. That Norse-inspired material really comes first, chronologically. I got the first real bite with Walt Simonson’s work when I was a little kid, and then later as a teen, I was further infected by the Swedish band Bathory. Then there is Tolkien, who masterfully took from them to help build out his world. Somewhere in there I would have started reading the myths proper, and more recently developed a more focused interest in the medieval Icelandic sagas.

Do you have a favourite scene from Hellboy: The Bones of Giants #1?

I think it’s the Ragnarok scenes. It was a real treat to be drawing Thor and Jormungandr within the Hellboy world, though I’d also be happy drawing pages and pages of Hellboy wandering through mountains. Maybe there can be a slow comics movement, like that seven-hour train ride video from Bergen to Olso. Hundreds of pages of Hellboy wandering, arctic hares, and snow storms. I’m sure that’d go over well. Ha. I’d be into it, though. I watched that seven-hour train video with my father-in-law. It was great. We spent a day at it, took coffee breaks. It was lovely.

Artistically has Hellboy: The Bones of Giants been a challenge to illustrate?

Yes.

If this were a live interview, I’d just leave that hanging for comedic effect, take a long sip of coffee. Seriously though, it was, and it was a good challenge. Hard and worth the fight. It’s a big story with a lot going on. I’d done that one Hellboy issue, Long Night at Goloski Station, which was a single night in a single location really––maybe a more atmospheric story, if that makes sense. I’ve also done a couple of graphic novels outside the Hellboy world, but this was my first time handling Hellboy in a larger story. It was longer than the one-shot, of course, but the pace of the story and the scale of action are also pretty different. Support from everyone at Dark Horse was very helpful, as was looking at all the great Hellboy work that’s been done. Mike’s, of course, but also rereading through Duncan Fegredo’s Hellboy books and Mignolaverse titles by Peter Bergting and Ben Stenbeck. That put fuel in the tank for sure, revisiting what has been done––and has been done so damn well.

What are you currently reading?

I just started Tolkien's Sir Gawain and the Green Knight translation, but I'm only a dozen pages in at the moment. I had just finished the new book by Paul Tremblay before that, Survivor’s Song. There’s a Hellboy connection there––I was surprised when reading a Tremblay short story collection not long ago to come across a short Hellboy story in it. It was really cool, too! For comics, I just picked up the first two issues of Mazebook by Jeff Lemire, and you know everything he makes is wicked cool. I’ve also recently reread Simonson’s Ragnarok series, as that has consistently been one of my very favorite titles in recent times. They just take me back to what got me into comics in the first place. They are exciting, fun, and amazing to stare at. That he is doing his best work now is also heavy-duty inspiring.

We would like to thank Matt for sitting and chatting with us and we wish him and the rest of his team the best of luck with Hellboy: The Bones of Giants.

This week see the return to the Baltimore universe with the long-awaited release of Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens from Dark Horse comics. The series is co-written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden, with art by Bridgit Connell, colours by Michelle Madsen, and covers by Hugo Award-winning illustrator Abigail Larson. We got a chance to sit down with the author Christopher Golden to talk about Baltimore. Christopher Golden has written a wide range of novels and comics, some of these include Angel, Baltimore, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Hellboy just to name a few.

Hi Christopher we are so excited to have you here with us today, we have been fans of your work for a very long time. We are so delighted that you are here to talk with us.

CG: Thanks so much!

You have been part of the Baltimore universe right from the beginning, how does it feel to be still creating in the Baltimore universe?

CG: It’s fantastic. When Mike and I created Baltimore in the novel Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire, we had some thoughts about there being a sequel at some point. But we never dreamed that it would grow to be this enormous mythology that goes back to the beginning of time, and the idea that it would become its own comic book universe never occurred to us. But then Joe Golem happened, and over time it grew organically into this much larger thing. Ideas and characters kept presenting themselves, and now it’s something I spend so much time thinking about, and I just want to keep exploring. And who could be anything but thrilled with the artists we’ve collaborated with while creating the Outerverse? Ben Stenbeck, Patric Reynolds, Peter Bergting, and Bridgit Connell. What a rogues’ gallery that is!

You have been working with Mike Mignola for quite a long time, what's it like working with Mike Mignola?

CG: As of this year, Mike and I have been working together for a quarter century, which is insane. We started way back when I persuaded him to let me write the first Hellboy novel, The Lost Army, which came out in 1997. I’d like to think we’ve been positive influences on one another. We share a certain frame of reference and a lot of similar interests, but our approaches have always been very different. My mind is always searching for explanations for things, trying to force order onto a story, and Mike’s much more about the weirdness and the beauty and not so much about explanation. Working with him has always inspired me by giving me the freedom to NOT explain something, to let the weird and beautiful just be weird and beautiful.

"ladybaltimore_twq1_1"

What can you tell us about the first issue of Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens?

CG: Thirteen years ago, Sofia Baltimore took part in a battle that decided the fate of the world. Her husband—her closest friend, Lord Baltimore—died during that battle. The great evil of the Red King was destroyed, but that didn’t drive all evil from the world. There are still monsters, there’s still darkness. It took time to begin to gather but now, as World War II begins and the Nazis ally themselves with a congregation of witches called the Hexenkorps, Lady Baltimore has gathered a small group of her own allies to combat the insidious evil and the monsters popping up around Europe. In the first issue, she encounters an old ally, Judge Rigo, who tells her that stories abound about Baltimore’s ghost appearing in various places. He needs her help in his own work against the Nazis, and if she’ll help him, he’ll help her get to the bottom of the stories of Baltimore’s wandering ghost. Of course, that’s just the first step in a dark, epic story of war, evil, love, and resurrection—but not the way you might think.

When you and Mike Mignola are writing together how does that work? Do you write the plot together? Do you write the script together?

CG: It really differs from project to project. Most of our work together is done on the phone. Sometimes Mike has a lot of plot elements in his head and we talk them out, or he’ll write down ideas. Sometimes I’ve dreamt up most of a story already. Either way, we hash it out, and then I’ll put flesh on the bones and run it all by him for his take on it all. The best part is that many of these characters and stories are big, sometimes epic, and Mike always has the ability to pull out the essence of a thing, to carve off the fat, whether in the plot or in the dialogue. When I started as a comics writer, I would overexplain everything, and Mike has done his best to cure me of that.

"ladybaltimore_twq1_2"

The Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens comic includes the talent of Bridgit Connell, Michelle Madsen and Abigail Larson. How did they join the Lady Baltimore comic and what has it been like working with them?

CG: Michelle has been the colorist on most of the previous Outerverse comics, and she’s fantastic. I wouldn’t want it any other way. With Bridgit—Katii and I had a long, ongoing email chain and various phone calls as we built a list of potential artists for this book, searching for someone who could bring the right combination of action and movement, who could do the kinds of backgrounds and visual world-building these stories need, and who could give life to the characters’ faces the way we wanted. We winnowed that list down to two or three people and then presented them to Mike. Katii and I had Bridgit as our first choice, but I don’t think we told Mike that. He had met Bridgit before, and loved her work. What I’ve found, working with Mike, is that he has a great eye for artists who are already really good but who have it in them to really level up, and he saw that in Bridgit…and boy, was he right. With Abigail, that was a Katii and Mike decision, but I’m so glad they made it. Abigail’s covers give Lady Baltimore a gorgeous, distinctive style that sets the series apart.

Some of our readers maybe not be familiar with the Baltimore novel and the comic series, is Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #1 new reader-friendly?

CG: Absolutely. My hope is that new readers will pick up Lady Baltimore #1 and, though they shouldn’t need to read Baltimore to understand it, they’ll be intrigued enough to go back to the beginning. Fortunately, the whole Baltimore story is available in two gorgeous, affordable omnibuses—check ’em out!

"ladybatlimore_twq1_3"

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

CG: Just a thanks in advance to readers who are willing to give Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #1 a shot. It’s a wild ride with a new hero I hope you’ll love as much as we do. Sofia is her own woman, with her own mission, and I can’t wait for people to see where it takes her!

We would like to say a big thank you to Christopher for taking the time to talk with us, Lady Baltimore: The Witch Queens #1 is out this week from Dark Horse comics.

Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Mike Mignola’s Legendary Creation on March 23, 2019

MILWAUKIE, Ore., (November 15, 2018)—Next year, on Saturday March 23, 2019, Dark Horse Comics will celebrate the 25th anniversary of legendary comic book creator Mike Mignola’s most famous creation with Hellboy Day. In 1994, Dark Horse Comics published the debut issue of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction and introduced comic book readers to the Right Hand of Doom, the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, and one of the most iconic comic book characters—and universes—of all time. For 2019’s Hellboy Day celebration, Dark Horse will publish a 25th anniversary, promotional edition of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction issue 1, featuring a new cover by Mignola and colorist Dave Stewart, which will be given away at participating comic book shops; and select stores across the country will host Hellboy Day events.

“When I created Hellboy way back when I never imagined he would be around long enough to celebrate a 25th anniversary,” said Mike Mignola. “I’m grateful to the writers, artists, colorists and letterers who’ve joined me in telling Hellboy stories for all these years. And, of course, so grateful to the fans. This thing could not exist without their support and it’s a pleasure every time I get to go out to meet them.” Mike Mignola will appear at a Hellboy Day signing at Earth 2 Comics in Sherman Oaks in Los Angeles on March 23.

Dark Horse is inviting comic book retailers to celebrate this milestone anniversary for the world’s greatest paranormal investigator by holding store events and sales of Hellboy titles. In addition, Dark Horse will be creating a series of Hellboy Day promotional materials for retailers, including a Hellboy Tattoo Sheet, a Right Hand of Doom bookmark, a window cling, an open/close sign, and a new, folded version of the Hellboy double sided poster and Mignolaverse timeline that debuted at New York Comic Con. Retailers will have the chance to order promotional, giveaway materials and are invited to take advance of additional backlist sale pricing in order to hold celebrations at their stores. Qualifying retailers who take advantage of backlist sales promotion will be automatically entered to win special prizing packages from Dark Horse.

“Hellboy fans: please make sure to tell your retailer you want your local store to participate in this awesome celebration today,” said Matt Parkinson, Dark Horse Vice President of Marketing. “And retailers: look for the December Previews for February on Sale (Issue #363) for details on backlist sales and contest deals, as well as ordering information on the promotional material being created for the event.”

For nearly 25 years, Mignola and a host of celebrated writers and artists have chronicled the adventures of Hellboy facing his supposed destiny as Beast of the Apocalypse, and explored the mysterious backstories of B.P.R.D. agents including Professor Trevor Bruttenholm and Abe Sapien. Hellboy’s adventures have appeared in what are known as the Mignolaverse — the strange, shared universe of comic books and graphic novels, comprised of acclaimed titles including Hellboy & the B.P.R,D., Abe Sapien, B.P.R.D., Crimson Lotus, Frankenstein Underground, Lobster Johnson, The Visitor: How and Why He Stayed and Witchfinder. Hellboy has appeared in graphic novels and comic books, prose novels and short story collections, two animated features, two live action films, toy lines and all manner of merchandise. Neil Marshall’s forthcoming Hellboy film starring David Harbour, Sasha Lane, Ian McShane, Penelope Mitchell, and Milla Jovovich will be released by Lionsgate on April 12, 2019.

For more information about the Mignolaverse comic books and graphic novels, as well as announcements of Dark Horse Comics’ plans for 2019 to celebrate the 25 year anniversary of the first Hellboy comic book, Hellboy: Seed of Destruction, follow the company on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Writer: Mike Mignola, Chris Golden

Artist: Peter Bergting

Colorist: Michelle Madsen

Cover: Dave Palumbo

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Spoilers

Compellingly creepy, this issue is too relevant for me for this time of year...the constant rain, basement floods, and monster masks in every other store: talk about a mirror of real life. The Drowning City #2 is a horror-filled fantasy sure to delight fans of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and Hellboy of course.

"joegolem_odtcd2_1"

I get drawn into the story from the strong beginning, which has a very gothic feel to it, and though the plot faltered here and there with some confusing dialogue, the pacing was mostly on point until the end. Perhaps it’s just me, but I felt that the story suddenly stuttered at the end, like it ran out of gas and slowed to a stop. It’s not really a cliffhanger, though there are plenty of ends to tie up, but it is more of a cop-out end, especially with the cliched dialogue. Some of the transitions between the continuing storyline and this specific arc could be improved, but that’s note huge. These are really my only gripes.

The more I get to know the characters of Joe and Church, the more intrigued I am to learn about both them. I wish there was a bit more of a voice given to each of them, as they seem a teensy two dimensional at this point, so I am hoping that they fill out more in later issues. The dialogue could be better, but it’s not horrible; just not impressive or all that natural, either.

"joegolem_odtcd2_2"

My favorite part of this issue is the art. The anatomy is very well drawn, and the backgrounds are highly detailed and sketchy at the same time, which gives the vibe that something is off: perfectly apt for a comic of this genre. The colors are somewhat muted with these kind of...smoky (for lack of a better word) shadows. It’s like the shading was smudged with fingertips, as one would do with charcoal. It’s neat.

Look no further if you’re seeking a terrifying mystery. This issue will satisfy.

Overall: 8/10

Writer: Mike Mignola

Artists: Richard Corben, Duncan Fegredo, Mick McMahon, Fábio Moon, Gabriel Bá, Dave Stewart, Matt Hollingsworth, James Sinclair, Clem Robins, Pat Brosseau.

Editor: Scott Allie

Collection Design: Cary Grazzini & Justin Couch

Digital Art Technician: Christina McKenzie

Publisher: Dark Horse Comics

Having never read a single Hellboy comic up until this volume, I’ll say right now that this is the best gift if you have somebody you want to know about Hellboy.

The short stories presented cover the earlier years of Hellboy’s existence, from the late 40’s, to the early 60’s, with a brief stint over the 80’s, and take the main character all over the world, in places such as Norway, Mexico, Ireland and Malaysia, dealing with monsters of their local folklores in ways only Hellboy can do: with punches and blows.

"hellboy_tcssvol1_1"

As an introduction to the to the so called Mignolaverse, the book works magnificently. From the first to the last, the stories ease you into the world of this character that, while familiar to those who have watched the movies, has much more to offer when not restrained to a Hollywood budget and standards.

As for favorite stories, I’m divided between the lyrical Midnight Circus, the collection of stories set in Mexico, or the award winning Crooked Man. This last one, set deep into the Apalachia, tales a tale about witches and their craft, deals with the devil and christian faith in a mixture that would fit right into an old school country song.

"hellboy_tcssvol1_2"

If I haven’t stressed this enough, here it goes again: this book is a find. The very talented Mr Cadwell has worked on numerous comics. Some of the comics he has worked on include: Nelson, Lovecraft Anthology 2, Sold State Tank Girl, Samuari Jack, Dangeritis, Helena Crash and Mr. Higgins Comes Home.

Hi Warwick, happy new year to you. It's a pleasure to have you here with us. As some of our readers may not be familiar with your work, could you please tell us a bit about yourself?

Hello, and Happy New Year! Falconspeare is my third book with Dark Horse comics and Mike Mignola, but before then came Samurai Jack, Helena Crash, The Marionette Unit, Dangeritis, and Tank Girl. But aside from comics I have worked for publishers and in the animation industry. I’m just a very enthusiastic drawer/drawist.

Can you tell us about the origins of Falconspeare?

Falconspeare is the third book in a sort of series (at this stage they can still be read in any order) following the adventures of a group of vampire hunters of old. In this book we discover they shared their formative years with a fourth member, James Falconspeare, and here we discover what has happened to him since the group last met many years before.

"flcnsp1"

How would you describe the Falconspeare graphic novel?

It’s a vampire adventure of sorts. These books revel in the classic horror worlds of Universal Studios and Hammer Horror, but have their own flavor too. They’re also inspired by Mike Mignola, who wrote the first book, Mr. Higgins Comes Home. I have tried to maintain a level of humor in there, too. But this is the darkest book of the three, I think.

For our readers who are not familiar with Professor J.T. Meinhardt, Mr. Knox and Ms. Mary Van Sloan. What can you tell us about these characters?

These are classic vampire adventurers, like Van Helsing or Professor Abronsius. Professor Meinhardt is an academic expert in the supernatural, and Mr. Knox is a compassionate and careful force for good. Ms. Mary Van Sloan is a spirited fighting force. They’re all enthusiastic and brave, but also pretty lucky in a world where the forces of evil command a strong upper hand. And in this book we find that James Falconspeare is the honorable, law-abiding champion of the group.

"flcnsp2"

When you were creating the graphic novel, did you write a full script?

I did, eventually. I’m an artist mainly, and very interested in narrative. My process for the last two books was to firstly work out the story in sketches and thumbnails to determine what I wanted to do. Then I turned that into a script, which I then redrew as roughs. The two sets of roughs either side of the script aren’t easy to compare., however, as the first is spread over many sketchbooks in many sizes and qualities over the course of a few years.

You are the writer and artist on Falconspeare; what do you enjoy being more a writer or an artist?

An artist I think, but that’s mainly because I’m more comfortable with that aspect. I love getting to grips with writing, and I really enjoy working with word and images to create stories. I like working with writers very much, but I’m really enjoying being in charge of both the script and art to model the stories.

""

Do you have a favourite character from Falconspeare?

Ah! That’s tricky, because I like them all. The main three we’ve already met in the other books get a chance to develop or reaffirm their characters, which is nice. But getting to introduce new characters is great, and there’s plenty in this. There’s a brief appearance from Meinhardt, Knox, and Sloan’s very grumpy butler (Mr. Tuphold). He’s only in acouple of panels, but he makes me laugh, and I think he could be a great character in future. Such an angry old character.

Could we see more of Professor J.T. Meinhardt, Mr. Knox and Ms. Mary Van Sloan in the future?

I certainly hope so, though I’ve got away with a lot so far. Drawing these books is amazing fun, and every page throws up more ideas for more stories to tell. So, I hope we get to follow their crazy adventures further.

"flcnsp4"

What are you currently reading?

My reading goes all over the place, often a long way behind. And in that spirit, “Acheron” by Mike Mignola at Dark Horse was ace! Steeple by John Allison, too. I love that series. Kyle Starks and Chris Schweitzer’s 6 Sidekicks Of Trigger Keaton (Image) was also awesome! Other than that, I’m mainly rereading The Tomb Of Dracula or Dracula Lives.

Any message for the ComicBuzz readers?

Try out Falconspeare? Follow me for art if they’re keen on Instagram @wocco or on Twitter @warwickjc. But mainly I’d encourage ComicBuzz readers to get drawing/ reading or making. Anything. It’s awesome fun.

A big thank you to Warwick Johnson-Cadwell for taking the time to chat with us. We would like to wish him and his team the best of luck with Falconspeare.

With the second issue of the Sword of Hyperborea series out next week from Dark Horse Comics, we are so delighted to be joined by the co-writer of the comic, Rob Williams. Rob Williams has written numerous titles. Some of the titles he has worked on include Cla$$war, Suicide Squad, Trinity, Action Comics, Amazing Spider-Man, Judge Dredd and Doctor Who.

Hi Rob, happy new year to you; it's great to have you here with us.

We have been fans of your work ever since we read Cla$$war.

Thanks! Good memories!

How did you get involved with the Sword of Hyperborea miniseries?

I’d just done a creepy gangsters-haunted-by-ghosts creator-owned book called Old Haunts via AWA Studios with Laurence Campbell. Laurence drew B.P.R.D. for Mike Mignola and Dark Horse for a number of years, and had been talking to Mike and the guys about doing a Gall Dennar barbarian story. He asked if I’d be interested in coming on to write the book, and I think the Hellboy team liked Old Haunts.

What made you want to be a part of the Sword of Hyperborea miniseries?

Working with Laurence is always a treat. He’s brilliant, and one of my best friends. Working with Mike Mignola in the Hellboy and B.P.R.D. world? Who wouldn’t want to do that? I’ve enjoyed those comics for the past couple of decades. It’s a treat to be involved in that universe.

"swordohyp1_1"

How would you describe the Sword of Hyperborea miniseries?

The sword is an important weapon in the end times of the Hellboy/B.P.R.D. story. It’s a mythical blade much like Excalibur. Our series spans thousands of years and shows you four very different heroes who held the sword at various points before passing it on, allowing us to tell very Hellboy-world tales in a Robert E. Howard-like barbarian landscape. Additionally we'll see stories set in World War I, World War II and finally the electric blues scene of Chicago in the 1950s.

The Sword of Hyperborea series takes place in the world of Hellboy; is the series new reader-friendly?

A: We hope so. We’ve certainly tried to make that the case. We had no interest in a big exposition-fest or historical tract. If you know the major points on the Hellboy map, you’ll get a kick out of the references. But really we have four heroes here, three of whom are brand new, and we want to send them on a journey and care about what happens to them. In introducing three new players who don’t know the key facts of this world, readers are really in the same position as them, fighting against an evil they don’t understand.

"swordohyp1_2"

What is it like writing with Mike Mignola?

A treat, as I said. I’ve been a fan for years. It’s intimidating too, because Mike’s one of the best writers we’ve had in comics, and the level of people he collaborates with is extraordinarily high. But he was very welcoming and a great sounding board for Laurence and me. Mike had a plot in mind for Gall Dennar in issue #1, which we built out from. Then it was a case of a few Zoom calls discussing the world, and Mike leading us to a few places we should probably go. It was a really enjoyable experience.

The rest of the team for Sword of Hyperborea consists of Laurence Campbell, Quinton Winter, Clem Robins and Dave Stewart. Were they already a part of the team when you joined the series?

Laurence was onboard before me, yes. And then I think Laurence suggested colorist Quinton Winter, who lives near him. They know each other. Quinton coloured Unfollow, a book of mine from Vertigo a few years ago, which Clem Robins also lettered. Small world. Dave Stewart had coloured Laurence's work on his B.P.R.D. run, so he colored our covers.

When you saw the art from Laurence Campbell and Quinton Winter, what did you think?

A: I’m very aware of what Laurence can do, having worked with him so often. He’s a master of mood on the page, a brilliant storyteller. We wanted issue #1 to be an epic Terrence Malick-like quest across this incredible landscape from thousands of years ago, with evil priests, woolly mammoths, immense mountain ranges, and the odd pterodactyl. Laurence and Quinton have brought all that to such vivid life here.

"swordohyp1_3"

Do you have a favourite scene from the first issue?

A: Gall Dennar, having been alone on his quest for years and sitting by a fire in the mountains, tripping on some barbarian concoction, calls out to his love from thousands of years in the future and a giant wolf spirit comes to talk to him. Laurence and Quinton did a phenomenal job there. It really feels magical.

What can you tell us about the second issue?

We move the action through the Victorian London of Sir Edward Grey, Witchfinder to the first ever zeppelin attacks on London, and then to Belgium in the First World War. A German agent called Graf Ling de Gotha is given a mission to find a cult that is undertaking strange ceremonies nearby, trying to summon something unnatural into the world…
