‘Back To School’

Welcome back folks, to another Nihon Box unboxing!

This time we are taking a look back on what was available in April’s box, as even with Japan Post resuming normal service the mail is still coming in rather slow, with each box taking several weeks to get here. April’s theme focused on going ‘Back To School’, so we have a rather interesting mix of items that are kind of associated with that. So let’s get started.

Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to for what I find a very affordable price each month.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxapril2021_1"

Now on to our first two items, both of which are from the GTO: Great Teacher Onizuka franchise. A manga series that first debuted back in the late 90’s and has had a number of adaptations over the years, including both anime and live action dramas. The series follows a young man named Onizuka who decides to become a teacher in order to attract women. He soon discovers he has a conscience and instead devotes himself to becoming the best teacher, thus using whatever means necessary to break through and help each one of his students that others have given up on. It genuinely sounds like a good show, much like Assassination Classroom - just minus the indestructible creature for a teacher. So in this box, we were lucky to receive a nice sized shopping bag and a set of four corkboard coasters. Each with various illustrations from the show. I would imagine that this series doesn’t have much merch nowadays, seeing as the last adaptation was back in 2014.

"nihonboxapril2021_2"

We also got a small stationary item in this month's box, with a Doraemon Sakura themed pen. Doraemon is perhaps one of the most iconic anime characters in Japan, perhaps more so than Pikachu. This blue alien cat has been a part of generations of people's childhoods since the 1970’s. Its initial manga ran for 26 years! The anime series is still ongoing even today. So its quite nice to be able to get an item that represents a show with that much history attached to it. I mean this box is supposed to be focussed on Back to School, yet this pen will be the only piece of stationary included.

"nihonboxapril2021_3"

Moving on, we have both a Japanese snack item and a good luck cat. Our snack for April’s box was the Karintó Matcha Milk Flavor pastry. They are a traditional Japanese snack food. Sweet and deep-fried, it is made primarily of flour, yeast, and brown sugar. With this version having a matcha milk taste to it. I was hoping to try this one for myself, but unfortunately it was out of date by the time it got to me. The joys of a slow postal service -.-’

On the right is a miniature black cat figure, known as a Maneki-neko Sakura. Over in Japan, the sakura (cherry blossom) season is associated with the start of a new school year. Many schools in Japan actually resemble what you would see in anime, in fact it is pretty common to see sakura trees planted at the front entrances of schools. This little figure is also meant to attract good luck and wealth, as this one is seen lifting its right paw.

"nihonboxapril2021_4"

We are now on to a rather large item that came in this Aprils’ box, and that is a figure of Yúji Itadori from the popular anime this year - Jujutsu Kaisen. Now I am certain you have seen plenty of posts and merch going around these past six months or so about this anime. Although I have yet to sit down and watch an episode myself, it seems to have created a rather large fanbase. It’s the latest supernatural series that seems to be pulling in a new audience for Weekly Shónen Jump, and is also available to read now over on the Shonen Jump manga app. With almost 150 chapters available to read now for just €1.99 a month. Coming back now to the figure, its rather large and is quite sturdy. All you have to do is sit the figure on the base and that's it. He comes in what I would call a ‘ready to fight’ pose, which I assume is his usual stance in the show. Its fairly well detailed and built, it was also added into this box just days after it was released in Japan. So its a fairly decent exclusive for a subscription box, its just freshly out in stores!

"nihonboxapril2021_5"

We are now onto our final item, one that is sure to cushion-the-blow for fans of these reviews! What school themed box would be complete, if it didn't include Koro Sensei? Many of you must be aware of the yellow, perverted octopus from Assassination Classroom. A fantastic show and manga, if you have never heard of it before. The plot follows a group of students, who have become outcasts in their own school due to either their behaviour or failing grades. An opportunity is presented to them to change their fortune, if they participate in trying to assassinate their new teacher - a terrifying and indestructible mutant by the name of Koro sensei. If they fail, the entire Earth will be destroyed by the time they graduate high school. It’s well worth checking out, either the manga or even the anime. So the merch we got from the show is infact a small pillow of Koro senseis’ head! Small, soft and round, it acts as a nice head cushion or just a simple throw pillow.

So there we have it everyone, that was April’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from classic shows such as GTO and Doraemon, to the newer franchises including Assassination Classroom and Jujutsu Kaisen. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but also to make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime fans and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Back to School”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about School life in Japan and how it is different from perhaps western countries. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

‘Beastial New Year’

Hello all, look what finally turned up in the post! My Nihon Box from January this year, it was such a long wait for this one as it was shipped just before Japan Post resumed their normal service. So let’s begin with the usual spiel of what this service offers!

Much like SoKawaii, Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door.

"nihonboxjan2021_1"

January’s box theme was ‘Beastial New Year’, which also marks the year of the Ox according to the zodiac calendar. The theme ties in with the Netflix show ‘Beastars’, which became a fan favorite when Season One was first released back in 2019. To which we received two items of merchandise from the show, including a Foaming Soap Dispenser - which is pictured above on the left. This pump bottle features the main wolf Legoshi, with the shows logo. Great to have when you buy the refillable bags of liquid soap. We also received a Legoshi plush as well, which is a nice addition to the box. As you don’t see many Beastars merch here in the west.

"nihonboxjan2021_2"

Moving on, we received a Demon Slayer mini figure from the Hikkake collection. Hikkake translates to Hooked, which is exactly what this figure series represents. Each character hooks onto a box underneath, with three characters available including Tanjiro, Nezuko and Zenitsu. This is just series one of these figures, you can buy the rest of them and more from Dekai Anime at the moment through this link: https://tinyurl.com/zjjz2mx6

"nihonboxjan2021_3"

"nihonboxjan2021_4"

Next up is this tiny little glass hanging mascot, featuring a Tanuki and Kitsune. This very well detailed figure pictured above is from the PUTITTO Tanuki to Kitsune collection. With five different figures to collect, they are from a very popular Japanese online manga series that tells the story of these two mischievous creatures from Japanese folklore. Its very cute and is certainly a series I would be interested in getting into. Although the figure is far from practical, it would be cute to have on your glass shelf or on any display glassware you might have.

"nihonboxjan2021_5"

Now in this box there was a note saying that when my box was being prepared to ship my food item - the Monaka chestnut and mochi, went out of date. So they kindly replaced the item with the above two, which on the left I am unsure as to what exactly it was. I was guessing some kind of mochi maybe? While on the right was the brown sugar soybean sticks that I really enjoyed from a previous box. Unfortunately neither of which I can eat, as both items went out of date a month or so before arriving in the post. Which was very disappointing, but I appreciate the thought.

"nihonboxjan2021_6"

Following on from our food items, we received a miso soup bowl featuring an image of Mount Fuji. This item has been entirely made in Japan, with a black background finish on the outside of the bowl, with images of sakura, clouds and the iconic Fuji-san. The only issue I have with it, is that it appears to be made of hard plastic. Which gives it a bit of a cheap feel to it. An interesting fact though is that Mt. Fuji is one of the symbols that represent a New Year in Japan. It is said that if you dream of the Mountain on the first sleep of the year, it will bring you good luck!

"nihonboxjan2021_7"

Another authentic item made exclusively in Japan, is the above Tako - Flying Kite. This is another New Years tradition in Japan, where you fly a kite with a traditional design on it. It can also be used as decoration, but I hope to be able to fly it one day. Perhaps pack it in my luggage and bring it with me on my eventual trip to Tokyo. Its very small, about the size of an A5 page. Little to no weight to it and was available in a number of different designs. The one I received featured a number of Gods in a boat, which is the image of the 7 Lucky Gods on a Treasure ship. Also known as the Takarabune. It’s interesting looking up the image of the kite you receive in your box, so you can discover the history of kites design.

"nihonboxjan2021_8"

The last item we all received in January’s box is a Pikachu Bento box. We now have a matching set, as we received a pair of Pokémon chopsticks and a case in last November’s box. This super adorable bento box, features the iconic yellow mascot's face on the front of the box.

"nihonboxjan2021_9"

Now if you are a regular subscriber, you will also receive a bonus item every few months. This is a very welcome surprise every time it happens and I have had my eye on this collection ever since it came out. The bonus item I received is a canvas tote bag from the Cardcaptor Sakura and Little Twin Stars collaboration that was released in August 2018. This bag features the iconic Cardcaptor Sakura in her new outfit from the Clear Card series and Kero. Both are drawn in the same design as Little Twin Stars siblings, Kiki & Lala. This bag even folds up into the inner pocket, into a very easily transportable size.

"nihonboxjan2021_10"

And that is a recap of January’s box, just five months late is all. Now I am still missing February's box, so expect another recap review in the coming weeks as well as new reviews for all upcoming Nihon and SoKawaii boxes as they arrive. This box had a good array of goods, for both anime and food fans. As we get a plush, a figure, some traditional and iconic items as well. Such a good box and well worth buying if you can.

For more information on how you can order your own box, look to the top of this review and head over to the link below so you can sign up today!

https://www.nihonbox.com/en
It is August already and the World is still in a heap, but thankfully we have boxes like SoKawaii that continue to bring a smile to our faces with their monthly deliveries that land on your doorstep before you even get that dispatch email. Well that’s what happened to me the last two months, this one arrived on a Thursday in Ireland - yet I only got the email on Saturday saying it was leaving Japan! It is a much needed welcome surprise nonetheless, as my travel plans for Japan this year have just been cancelled for the foreseeable future due to travel restrictions.

So regarding August’ box, this month’s theme was “Mystical Forest Camp” - which includes some very useful everyday items, a ReMent figure, adorable Sanrio Tote Bag and more! Now onto that all important information!

SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 6 to 8 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts. https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiiaugust2020_1"

First off we have a product from the ever popular ReMent franchise, this time from the latest Pokémon release: Utatane Basket. With six very sleepy Pokémon character figures to collect, you are guaranteed one mystery box in this very box. I got the Alolan Vulpix, which comes very well detailed & made - and now sits on my bookshelf with the rest of my ReMent figures.

"sokawaiiaugust_2"

Next up we have two items which go hand in hand with this month’s theme of camping. First up we have the un-announced mystery Sumikko Gurashi item, which is a stainless mug. This interesting looking item looks very ideal to take with you on camping holidays, as it seems as though it can be used directly on a fire to boil water in. As to if the printed on designs will burn off - well I wouldn’t like to be the one that has to test out that theory. This travel mug was available in two similar designs and features what looks to be a pram/bag clip as a handle - which is ideal to attach onto the outside of your rucksack. This item is aimed directly at those adventuring types of people, as I doubt it would be used much whilst sitting in the cupboard at home.

"sokawaiiaugust2020_3"

Our second food related item is this official Studio Ghibli ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ bento box. This two tiered lunch container, also includes a divider between the layers and a fork. With the very recognisable grey coloring and iconic Totoro shaped design on the top, this is a must have item for any household that enjoys making homemade lunches. Although slightly smaller in size than what I was expecting, it is BPA free and for the most part - is Microwave safe! Just remember to remove the lids and fork before nuking that lunch! The only thing about it, is that you can’t simply throw it in the dishwasher. This is a hand wash only container, so make sure to look out for that. Now I’m not entirely sure what kind of lunches I would put in this, so leave me a comment down below as to what would be your ideal first meal when you use this Bento box.

"sokawaiiaugust2020_4"

Now this incredibly gorgeous Sanrio bag was a complete surprise when I got my box, as it was never even hinted at last month! As you can see it is a fairly large tote bag and was also the first item that greeted me when I opened the box. Now the one I received was a Hello Kitty design, which was a collaboration with graphic artist and fashion designer - Jun'ichi Nakahara. He is known as the man who greatly developed the idea of giant anime eyes for shojo manga characters. I highly advise googling his name and looking up his art work in google images, as it is very classic looking, with almost porcelaine qualities to the character designs. It adds a touch of class to what would have been a very plain looking Hello Kitty bag, the best qualities though are the fully zipped openings and the detail inside the bag and separate compartments. Not sure how I will be using this bag yet, as it seems almost too good to use for a quick trip to the shops.

"sokawaiiaugust2020_5"

We are now onto our final two items, starting with this almost familiar looking plushie in the top left hand corner. This furry creature is from the Tanuki & Kitsune plush range, of which I got the Kitsune. Which is the Japanese word for fox, who are often looked upon in religious terms as messengers from God or in Japanese folklore as being tricksters and shapeshifters. My little fox cub looks awfully similar to a Pikachu in their coloring, but is very soft and well stuffed - which makes it a cute companion to have sitting on your shoulder as you're typing away. And last but not least, we have a puffy sticker pack from this years’ best selling game - Animal Crossing. Featuring many of your favorite characters including Tom Nook, Isabelle and Marshal.

There you have it folks, that is everything from August 2020 SoKawaii box, so let’s get on to the subscription details.

"sokawaiiaugust2020_6"

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. At the moment, SoKawaii are shipping their boxes via DHL as Japan Post is still not allowing worldwide postage from Japan. So that's why at the moment, I have 5 months of Nihon Box stuck in a warehouse in Tokyo. Fingers crossed I can actually get them at some point this year! Thankfully this hasn’t been the case for SoKawaii, which is a blessing! Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options - there are savings to be had.

1 MONTH – $35.00/€31.77mo

3 MONTHS – $33.50/€30.40mo

6 MONTHS – $32.00/€29.04mo

12 MONTHS – $31.50/€28.59mo

Better yet, here is a 10% discount code that you can use on your first box!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you liked everything you saw in this review of August’s box, rest assured that the items are different every month. Each box has 6 to 8 items included and a few of them will be revealed online through SoKawaiis’ social media as the weeks go by. September’s box theme is “Too Kawaii For School”, which will feature goods from Sailor Moon, Sanrio & Pokemon, with a few of the products included already announced across their social media.

https://www.sokawaii.com/

;
