In an alternative timeline there exists a similar New York. Much like our own, with the only exception being that it has its own schools of magic. Grand buildings that give the best education in not only the common subjects of math, literature and science - but it's students are children of prophecies. Each tasked with their own unique destiny - many of which are either to vanquish evil or save entire realms.

Logan is one such student, however she unexpectedly fulfilled her prophecy at the age of 13. Now she is coming to the end of her Graduate programme, with no direction or career in sight. When she learns about her ex girlfriend achieving her happily ever after, it reawakens some old wounds. One that the new hot girl in town might be able to solve. Thing is, not everyone has achieved their prophecies yet!

This story went in a different direction than what I was expecting from the first few pages. At the beginning of the first issue, we are introduced to the young lovebirds Logan and Bailey, who are students at a magical high school. We get a quick glimpse into their relationship and the reason they both attend Destiny University. Their relationship status changed drastically over the next few years, until we met Logan again seven years later. We are mostly following her life, as she is dealing with heartache, confusion over her future and some mild sexual frustration. Her Knight in shining armor seems to appear in the form of Lilith, who saves her from what could have been a complete write off of a day.

"destinyny1_1"

So in these first two issues we delve into the complex life of Logan, her ex Bailey, a former hook up named Gia who comes back into her life and new bad girl on the block Lilith. Unfortunately for Logan, it seems her old flame Gia won't be coming BFFs with Lilith anytime soon, as they have been prophesied to vanquish one another. This final year of school has just gotten a whole lot more complicated, as Logan deals not only with adjusting to 'normal life' by searching for a career - but now her inner circle is about to split asunder. She can't seem to catch a break!

Although we haven't had any crazy magic yet, there is one familiar wizard kid amongst the students named Joe. His character is remarkably similar to Harry Potter - but just more of a snob! It's quite entertaining to be fair. Aside from Logan's storyline, we also get a quick understanding of some of the other characters including Gia, her seer Anthony, and even a cliff hanger from none other than the Dean - Ms David's. Which has me anxiously waiting to see what happens next in Issue 3.

'Destiny, NY' is brought to life by author Pat Shand (Snap Flash Hustle) and artist Manuel Preitano (DC Comics’ The Oracle Code) with an incredible limited-edition cover by Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise). Pat Shand has an incredible list of work thus far, not only stemming from comics, but also novels, film making, short stories and theatre. Manuel Preitano is not only the co-creator and illustrator for Destiny NY, but is also the artist for DC Comics The Oracle Code. The artwork in this series has been flawless thus far, the first story page had its own style where it was clear they were being filmed through a lens. We also saw our main characters as young students and then 7 years later. They had obviously changed over time, and it was depicted very well. It's very clear cut illustrations, nothing over shadowed or difficult to make out. Plenty of light and just a joy to read.

Destiny, NY #1 & #2 are available now from all good comic book shops. Well worth checking out this one, as #3 is out on the 26th May so not much longer to wait.

Whilst in the middle of penning her new book, she discovers her perfect happily ever after relationship was all a sham and quickly packs her bags to join her illustrator friend Robin on her move to San Francisco! Here our innocent young author is thrown out of her tranquil surroundings and into a new Wonderland - where her new housemates are out and proud about their kinks. Just what wonders await Alice in this dazzling new town?

I am sure we are all aware of the Lewis Carroll classic that was ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Well this story’s Alice takes herself to the Golden Gate City in search of some freedom, inspiration and distance from her toxic ex girlfriend. She is now on a journey of self discovering after a harsh taste of reality back home. Not wanting to rely on her close friend Robin, Alice takes it upon herself to find her own place, which ultimately ends up being in a shared house with a bunch of ‘interesting women’? Perhaps this will be a tale of sexual awakening and exploration for our timid Alice.

"aliceinleatherland1_1"

With only 36 pages for our first issue, it has left us with an interesting start to Alice’s next step in life as she settles down in SF. We discover that her illustrator Robin could be a possible love interest in the future, Alice has deep ties to FairyTales and wants to live her life as close to one as she possibly can. Alice also just had a massive shock when she discovered the true feelings her ex had for her and then took it upon herself to just pack up and leave all of a sudden for a new city. Alice appears to be an all or nothing gal from what I read, she has her own style which isn’t racey or controversial. Playing it safe, seeing as her profession is that of a children's author. It will also be interesting to see how her own story telling will evolve with her lifestyle change to the big city. Will this little firefly discover her light again?

So this comic series is definitely aimed at a more mature audience, as you may have guessed from the front cover. Which I must say has so many details that could be overlooked at first glance, and I am guessing may have several clues as to how this story will progress. For now we are done with the main introductions, but for the issues ahead I will be amazed if there isn’t a rauchy sex scene, a pole dance or some form of bondage. This girl Alice is in a whole new World to explore!

"aliceinleatherland1_2"

Alice in Leatherland is brought to us by real-life creative couple Iolanda Zanfardino (writer) and Elisa Romboli (artist) while they were in a pandemic lockdown together. Having found the time to sit down and work on a comic book mini series together, they created this diverse, modern romantic comedy that is bound to make a splash in the comic book industry. I’m interested to see where this story will go in further issues and just how far it is willing to illustrate on page. ‘Alice in Leatherland’ is being published by Black Mask Studios, the Los Angeles based indie publishing company. January 18, 2018) Having taken the publishing industry by storm with a widely popular Kickstarter campaign for their acclaimed comic book, co-creators Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3 are publishing two new titles set in the world of BLACK, their controversial comic that asks “in a world that already fears and hates them, what if only Black people had superpowers?” The progressive, Los Angeles-based indie publisher Black Mask Studios will publish both of these new projects in early 2018, the first of several planned BLACK spinoff titles.

"AMERICASSWEETHEARTTPB"

On sale timed to Black History Month, the original graphic novel BLACK [AF]: AMERICA’S SWEETHEART introduces America's first superhero, a black teenage girl. Though Eli Franklin’s friends and neighbors in rural Montana think of her as a typical 15-year-old, she just might be the most powerful person on the planet. The adopted daughter of a government official, Eli sets out to give America hope as its first superhero, Good Girl, but soon discovers it may take more than donning a patriotic costume to lessen societal divides. On sale in comic book stores on January 31 and in bookstores on February 13, BLACK [AF]: AMERICA’S SWEETHEART is a stand-alone YA story that updates classic superhero tropes (an adopted child manifests incredible powers of super strength, invulnerability, and flight) to tell a bold, thrilling, and timely origin story for a new generation.

The book introduces artist Jennifer Johnson, who makes her graphic novel debut. “With superhero comic books rising to prominence, many stories have evolved to reflect modern ideals,” said Johnson. “AMERICA’S SWEETHEART embodies ideas of heroism, sacrifice, and empathy while reflecting on the world around us. Eli is a savior that we need and a character that many can identify with. In the wake of her powers, Good Girl harbors an uncompromising sense of justice and selflessness, unafraid to do what’s right for the greater good.”

“In this book, we wanted to show the breadth and depth of the world of BLACK and our flexibility to explore other genres within it,” said co-creator and writer Osajyefo. “Jennifer Johnson's charming approach to the art allows us to tell a coming-of-age story that has a lot of dynamic action as well as social context.”

"BLACK-AF-WidowsAndOrphans"

Following the publication of BLACK [AF]: AMERICA’S SWEETHEART, Black Mask Studios will publish the miniseries BLACK [AF]: WIDOWS & ORPHANS starting in April. The four-issue series will reunite BLACK co-creators Kwanza Osajyefo and Tim Smith 3, with Osajyefo writing the series and Smith illustrating it. The series highlights Anansi, one of the characters introduced in BLACK, and marks the first BLACK series to be illustrated by Smith, who designed the characters that Jamal Igle illustrated in the first BLACK comics.

“Tim and I first came up with the concept of BLACK almost a decade ago,” said Osajyefo. “It’s a thrill to see these characters come to life through his art in the pages of this series.”

“Like the other titles, BLACK [AF]: WIDOWS & ORPHANS is no-holds-barred storytelling,” said Smith. “This story features Anansi and Hoodrat investigating a human trafficking ring that will take them across the globe and bring them face-to-face with dark pasts of abuse, child soldiers, and families torn apart. The series asks a genuinely disturbing question—in a world where only black people have superpowers, what price do they fetch on the black market?”

More BLACK titles are in development from the co-creators and Black Mask Studios.

Los Angeles, CA) What if the children of the .0001% rejected their family legacies of global brutality and tore down the billionaire patriarchy? That's the concept behind BILLIONAIRE KILLERS, a new comic book series created by writer Matteo Pizzolo and artist Soo Lee about corruption, conspiracy, and what happens when the next generation vows to burn it all down. On sale this March, BILLIONAIRE KILLERS is the latest comic book series from Black Mask Studios, the progressive, Los Angeles-based indie publisher of acclaimed titles including BLACK, THE DREGS, KIM & KIM and 4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK.

“BILLIONAIRE KILLERS is about a new generation assessing the terrible things done by the previous generation,” said writer Matteo Pizzolo. “In simplest terms, BILLIONAIRE KILLERS asks: what if someone like Ivanka Trump became radicalized?”

In BILLIONAIRE KILLERS, the CEO of ExxonMobil is America’s Secretary Of State, a hedge fund manager worth $300 million is the Secretary Of The Treasury and a lawyer who sued the EPA 14 times is head of the EPA. It’s a world where the President stops even bothering to hide the fact that America is ruled by corporations; a world where the next generation declares: enough. The series follows two young women, Sera and Pru, heiresses to their industrialist fathers’ empires, who come to learn the patriarchs of their families earned their fortunes by causing global suffering, and then decide to go to war against their own parents.

"BillionaireKillers-01_coverB"

BILLIONAIRE KILLERS is a standalone, ongoing comic book series that expands on YOUNG TERRORISTS, the acclaimed comic by Pizzolo and artist Amancay Nahuelpan. "You can think of BILLIONAIRE KILLERS as YOUNG TERRORISTS: YEAR ONE, but it also completely works as an altogether new narrative. If there’s one thing we’ve learned in the past 5 years at Black Mask it’s that readers love wild, fearless, passionate comics, and that’s what Soo Lee and I are aiming for here.”

In addition to the debut of BILLIONAIRE KILLERS, 2018 will also see the return of CALEXIT, the acclaimed comic book series by Pizzolo and artist Amancay Nahuelpan, which sparked international headlines and acclaim in 2017. Following a hiatus, CALEXIT returns on February 14 with the release of the much anticipated second issue as well as a new, third printing of the debut issue which features a cover by Ashley A. Woods. “Issue 2 is our Valentine’s Day love letter to Trump just when he's declaring war on California,” said Pizzolo. “And then, in March, with issue three, we will bring the first CALEXIT storyline to an explosive close.”

"BillionaireKillers-01_coverC"

In CALEXIT, the citizens of California struggle to seize power back from an autocratic government after a fascistic President takes over the United States. "From its history as a breakaway state with the Bear Flag Revolt to becoming the home of rebel fiction like Star Wars and NWA, California has represented the spirit of resistance for almost two hundred years. The first arc of CALEXIT tells the tale of a U.S. President going to war against the Golden State, and, with California being the fifth largest economy on Earth, things escalate pretty quick. Although we conceived this story back before the 2016 election, California's defiance of Trump's policies and the Trump Administration's new policy war against California has us scrambling to keep our speculative adventure a step ahead of the real world.”

"Calexit-01_3Pcover"

The third printing of CALEXIT issue 1 by writer Matteo Pizzolo and artist Amancay Nahuelpan, featuring a cover by Ashley A. Woods, goes on sale on February 14, 2018.

CALEXIT issue 2 by Pizzolo and Nahuelpan goes on sale on February 14, 2018.

CALEXIT issue 3, by Pizzolo and Nahuelpan, the conclusion of the series’ first story arc, will be published on March 14, 2018.

BILLIONAIRE KILLERS issue 1, by writer Matteo Pizzolo and artist Soo Lee, is 36 pages and will retail for $3.99 when it goes on sale on March 28, 2018. BILLIONAIRE KILLERS issue 1 will have 3 covers — by Soo Lee, Alexis Ziritt and Amancay Nahuelpan.

Superheroes are synonymous with comic books, while SuperPACs are ingrained in the current political landscape, and now there’s an unlikely crossover between the two worlds in the works. Matteo Pizzolo, the writer of the acclaimed comic book series CALEXIT and the co-founder of Black Mask Studios, is starting a SuperPAC called Become The Government to support first-time candidates from non-partisan backgrounds in the 2018 midterm elections. Pizzolo will contribute his writing royalties from the acclaimed ongoing CALEXIT comic book series to support Become The Government. Last week the first issue of the series by Pizzolo and artist Amancay Nahuelpan was released with a print run of 25,000. Within 24 hours, the book had sold out at the distribution level and at most major comic book retailers, prompting publisher Black Mask Studios to immediately initiate a second printing.

“Our intention in creating CALEXIT was to tell a story that celebrates the spirit of resistance. We want it to ultimately be optimistic, if not inspirational,” said Pizzolo. “Our job is first and foremost to serve our characters and tell an entertaining story. We’re not preaching at our audience.

“But at the same time, we have the opportunity to engage with readers on another level in a conversation about the state of the country. Each issue of CALEXIT has interviews with people like political activist Amanda Weaver, director Lexi Alexander and author Bill Ayers and I’ll be documenting the formation of the SuperPAC in the back matter of the upcoming comics.

“For me, forming the SuperPAC is an incredibly educational experience in how our government works, and I hope that by documenting my process in the backmatter of CALEXIT I can share what I’m learning about this strange and fascinating part of American politics, “ said Pizzolo. “With the Become The Government SuperPac, I’ll be putting my money where my ideals are by taking a more active role in the 2018 midterm elections, just like I hope CALEXIT might inspire some readers to take a more active role in their local communities.”

In CALEXIT, the citizens of California struggle to seize power back from an autocratic government. The ongoing series tells the story of Jamil, a 25-year old courier (aka smuggler), and Zora, a 27-year old leader in the Pacific Coast Sister Cities Resistance, who escape together from a prison camp in Occupied Los Angeles, where martial law has been in place for the past year — ever since America’s demagogue President signed an executive order to deport all immigrants, and California responded by proclaiming itself a Sanctuary State. Each issue of CALEXIT will also include non-fiction material about local sustainability and grassroots campaigning for 2018 elections.

“When I started researching and speaking with people who are doing real-world political work, it really struck me how important midterm and local elections are, and how the smaller elections that aren't as glamorous as the Presidency have an outsized influence on people's everyday lives. And I became very inspired to join the process and support new candidates in smaller elections who can effect change on a local level in the short and medium term while also rising with grassroots support to become national leaders over the long term.

“Not all of our readers share my personal values and this isn’t an official position of the book, my co-creators, or the company, it is simply what I personally am opting to do with money I earn from my work writing the book. And I hope that by being open and honest about that it will continue the conversation between writer and readers. I’m hoping my experiences here will inspire our readers to participate more directly in their local communities, and I would hope it might encourage readers of all political points of view toward greater and more constructive participation. If there’s one thing I’m trying to say with the book it’s that we don’t have to agree on everything in order to work together.”

Become The Government will be an independent-expenditure-only political action committee focused on supporting first-time candidates in the 2018 midterm elections. The group, which will select candidates to support but will not donate directly to them nor coordinate directly with their campaigns, intends to advocate for candidates who bring fresh new ideas, perspectives, and experiences to the position.

Black Mask Studios will be exhibiting at San Diego Comic Con this week at Booth 2104 and selling a San Diego Comic Con exclusive cover by Winston Smith. the iconic artist whose work graced the album covers of THE DEAD KENNEDYS. The Los Angeles based indie publisher has arranged the “CALEXIT: Change The World Tour” of comic stores to promote the new series this summer.

;
