We are well and truly getting into the festive spirit as a much anticipated Christmas season is just around the corner. After what has been a very much considered ‘write off’ of a year, I am getting into the holiday season this November and I already have the tree & decorations up this week. And what seems like an early Christmas present each month, my November SoKawaii box turned up just in time as I was finished decorating!

This months’ theme is “Kira Kira Night”, which roughly translates to Twinkle Twinkle Night. It has products from Pokémon, Sanrio and Kirby. Which range from a plush to stationary, a gift set, a Re-ment figure and an on-the-go cup.

So let’s get onto the important information shall we? SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 6 to 8 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts. https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/ And at the moment, they are amongst one of the only subscription boxes that are still able to reach your door no matter what country you are in! *cough cough I now have 9 months of Nihon Box crates stuck in Japan due to Japan Post still not shipping to Ireland*

"sokawaiinovember2020_1"

Our first product and the largest, was a pastel rainbow coloured Sanrio plush. Of which I received the Hello Kitty version, but there was also a Pompompurin and Cinnamoroll up for grabs. All three appear as though they are snuggly knit into a pastel colored jumpsuit with hood. All of which remind me more of a pastel galaxy design instead of a rainbow inspired palette. They are well padded and stitched together, they come with a zip in the back like most of the plushies that seem to come in this box in the past. I honestly don’t understand the design appeal of having a tiny pocket in the back of a plush, that can only fit like a few coins. It also comes with a keychain on the top of the plush, so you can attach it to your bag, a hook, your bedpost or even on your clothing like the incredibly fashionable people that frequent Takeshita Street and Harajuku.

"sokawaiinovember2020_2"

"sokawaiinovember2020_3"

Our second item is a Pokémon Re-ment figure from the Starrium series. Just like the name suggests, this series focuses on stars which plays perfectly with this month's box theme. This Re-ment series has six designs to collect, which include Pikachu, Lapras, Jirachi, Gardevoir, Umbreon and Espeon. Unlucky for me I received the one design I least wanted, which was Pikachu. It’s still adorable and well made, and only came in two pieces that had to be assembled. Which is very nice, as some Re-ment figures like the Rilakkuma terrarium we received a few months back included too many loose figures. This series is well worth checking out and if you did receive one in your box - you can complete your collection by heading over to TokyoToys which have the full collection up for grabs. (https://www.tokyotoys.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=379&q=Pokemon+Starrium)

"sokawaiinovember2020_4"

"sokawaiinovember2020_5"

Our stationary item this box, comes from Kirby. As we get a notebook, which is available in two designs. This ruled and spiraled notebook, both feature Kirby on the forefront as well as an enclosed pocket design that is just filled with sparkling sequins to resemble a starry night sky. Each of the 70 pages inside are designed with Kirby featured along the bottom of each page. This is a high quality gift and one that I am more than pleased to add to my collection. What I will be using this notebook for in the future, I don’t quite know yet. With the design, it might just be ideal as a jotter to write down the crazy dreams I have after a night full of eating nothing but sweets!

"sokawaiinovember2020_6"

Our fourth item this month is an unusual one, as we receive a pack of My Melody laundry pegs. Although super cute and certainly practical. I have yet to test them out to see how strong they really are. You could also use them as a stationary item, if you wish to peg up some photos, drawings or notes on a string around your room. I have seen this done many times on Pinterest and maybe worth trying out, if you prefer having them more as decoration instead of having them exposed to the elements outside. They could also work as a bag clip, as suggested on the packaging. How useful they will be, will all depend on their grip.

"sokawaiinovember2020_7"

Next up, we have quite an interesting product. So from first glance, it appears to be a very small cup. Once you turn it over and look inside, you will see a raised design in the middle with ridges. This cup fits on top of any drink bottle you buy. So say I bought a 500ml bottle of Pepsi, I can attach my cup to the top of the bottle by firmly pushing it down. Then I can unscrew the cap, with the cup still on. That is what the ridges are for, to grip the screw top cap on the plastic drink bottle. Now the cup is incredibly tiny and I don’t see much use for it, except for little kids. So say you are going on a picnic (certainly not in this weather anyway) and your child isn’t skilled enough yet to hold a heavy drink bottle on their own. You can bring this cup for them and it should stay neatly on the bottle as you are travelling. This product is definitely intended for younger children and is much akin to what would be seen usually with a flask, when you are carrying copious amounts of tea or soup with you on the go. This Sanrio PET Bottle Cap Cup is available in two designs, featuring either Kuromi or Cinnamoroll - of which I got the lather. Although the Kuromi one is far better detailed compared to what I would describe as a rather plain Cinnamoroll version.

"sokawaiinovember2020_8"

And last but not least, we have a Cosme Gift Set. This very well presented piece, encloses a decorative hand towel and a small bottle of hand cream. The packaging is eye catching and this alone would be perfect to either use yourself or put away for someone special. It would also be a shame to even wrap this as a present, as it is stunning enough even on its own. This item is available in two designs, as either Hello Kitty or My Melody. Either or which will be printed on the hand towel and the hand cream bottle included.

"sokawaiinovember2020_9"

And there we have it folks, that was Novembers’ Kira Kira Night box from SoKawaii. Another jam backed box, filled not only with some practical items, but also a plush and even a decorative Re-ment figurine. The highlights for me this month, have to be the Kirby notebook and the Pokémon Re-ment figure, the Cosme gift set was also a very nice inclusion and is completely travel sized as I am constantly on the go. So if you want to know how to get your own subscription, then continue on reading! There’s even a discount code in there.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. At the moment, SoKawaii are shipping their boxes via DHL as Japan Post is still not allowing worldwide postage from Japan. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 MONTH – $35.00/€31.77mo

Now if you liked everything you saw in this review of November’s box, rest assured that the items are different every month, for the most part. Each box has 6 to 8 items included and a few of them will be revealed online through SoKawaiis’ social media as the weeks go by. December’s box theme is “Kawaii Christmas Party”, which will feature goods from Animal Crossing, Sanrio and Kirby, with a few of the products included already announced across their social media. And this box will mark the last one to be released for 2020!

As Ireland heads into its second lockdown of the year, at least I have my October SoKawaii box to enjoy over the next few weeks. This months’ theme is focused on the Spooky season as Halloween is just around the corner. Although this year is going to be a very down played celebration, I have the popcorn bought and the list of movies lined up to enjoy on All Hallows Eve! Also did you know that Halloween originated in Ireland? It’s true!

So onto this months’ box, we have 100% licensed products from Studio Ghibli, Sanrio and DoReMi. With a number of household and stationary items included, it really is a practical bunch of gifts. I mean I see the plush as well needed during these unsettling times.

"sokawaiioctober2020_1"

Our first gift in this month's box is this adorable Halloween themed Kuromi plush from Sanrio. Which is in fact my very first Kuromi plush, which I am delighted about. Where Kuromi usually sports a black and purple theme, for this Fall season, she is switching out her purple for the Pumpkin Orange look. Although not my favorite look or her’s, it is still adorable and well made. On the back there is a small zipper, which hides a very small pocket which might just hide a coin or two and nothing more. There is also a keychain on top that allows you to hang it from your bag, a hook or even your bedpost.

"sokawaiioctober2020_2"

On to our second gift, next up we have another Sanrio Halloween themed item in the form of this Cinnamoroll pouch. This is the second month in a row now we have gotten a Sanrio pouch, although this one is larger in size and of better quality - in all honesty how many pouches does one person need?! The design is adorable, with a spooky looking Cinnamoroll and background. With a strong zip and decent size pouch, you could easily fill this up with all that spare cash we all have or just full of candy!

We are now half way through this box and SoKawaii have added a bit of a throw back to what would be classed as an old anime now. They have added a fold out memo pad from ‘Magical Doremi’, a magical girl series that first debuted back in 1999 that is still being adapted even today. This is very high quality and looks like it must have come from a pop up store, as I imagine it would be pretty rare to find something from this franchise in stores very often. This product is available in two designs, which has 6 different memo pads inside that correspond to each character.

"sokawaiioctober2020_4"

We are now on to the first of our Studio Ghibli items, with this 500ml tumbler. It’s decorated all round with the classic Totoro characters and a forest theme, it doesn’t have anything that actually themes it exclusively to Halloween or even Fall. In fact you could easily use this all year round. It comes with a straw, a screw-on lid and is BPA free. It is also very simple to clean, but I wouldn’t chance putting it in the dishwasher as I would be afraid the design would come off.

"sokawaiioctober2020_5"

Our second Studio Ghibli item is this adorable set of Jiji chopsticks, featuring the iconic black cat from Kiki’s Delivery Service. These bamboo chopsticks are essential when it comes to eating that next Cup Noodle in the middle of the night, in fact what will be the first meal you eat with these chopsticks? Let me know in the comments below or on our social media. It is also not dishwasher safe, so once again this product is best to hand wash.

"sokawaiioctober2020_6"

And now our final item is this Sanrio Candy Mold featuring My Melody. This is our third kitchen item this month and is perfect for those that love making their own sweet treats. These molds look like they will make some adorable chocolate characters, not sure I have the patience to even give it a go though as I may just end up eating the melted chocolate halfway through the recipe.

And there we have it folks, that was October’s SoKawaii box. Kinda surprised they didn’t include some sort of sweet treat, instead they included a chocolate mould. Overall I really enjoyed this box, simply for the plush and tumbler. The rest was just a bonus.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. We are now 9 months into this incredibly unpredictable year, but thankfully we still have SoKawaii arriving at our doorsteps each month with no hassle. This month’s theme is “Too Kawaii For School”, with perfect timing as schools and colleges have just started to reopen again. The items inside are there to help you as you prepare to go back for another year of education, featuring some products from Sailor Moon, Sanrio and Pokemon!

SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). "sokawaiiseptember2020_1"

The largest item we have this month and is no doubt the one you will spot the second you open your box, is this Cinnamoroll Sakura bag from Sanrio. This large plush handbag is fairly practical as it has a decent size pocket inside which will be able to fit your phone and perhaps a few pens or a small wallet. It will be even more practical for students as a pillow they can get some sleep on whilst waiting around in college after a session the night before. This is sure to be a very sought after bag come RAG or Freshers week. The only downside is that its’ white, which will make it almost impossible to keep clean whilst travelling.

"sokawaiiseptember2020_2"

Our next two items are also from Sanrio, so let’s begin with our guaranteed Kuromi pouch. This is actually the first Kuromi item I have been lucky enough to receive ever since I started my subscription in April 2019. With this pouch you could use it for a number of things, from carrying make-up to toiletries, stationary or even some coins. It’ll no doubt serve some purpose.

Our third item features My Melody, who is Kuromi’s rival within Sanrio. We get a pair of Magnet clips in the shape of My Melody's head which are ideal to use both on the fridge or on a magnet memo board. The other suggestions given on the packaging include using it as a money clip or as a bookmark. They are useful for holding notes on the fridge, especially those that include those all important exam dates and holidays!

"sokawaiiseptember2020_3"

Moving on, we now have our Pokémon item. Which was the already announced Pikachu mug from the Pokémon Girly Collection. This white ceramic mug thankfully arrived in one piece, although short in stature it will still be more than capable of getting that much needed coffee into you each morning. As well as those well deserved hot chocolates as we get closer and closer to the Christmas season. Best to wash this by hand though, as it may be difficult to locate a similar one if it ends up broken.

"sokawaiiseptember2020_4"

We are now onto our final two items, both of which belong in the stationary section. First up we have a Sailor Moon Crystal pen from Dr. Grip. This 0.5mm mechanical pencil is stunning, with two shades of pink on the outside, the inner design showcases both Sailor Moon and Chibi Moon together. Seeing as it’s a mechanical pencil, it should be possible to find refills fairly easily so you can keep using this pen for years to come! It is definitely a must have item for your studies this year!

Following that we have a clear file from Sumikko Gurashi. This item was available in six designs, compared to the other items in this box are all guaranteed in every crate! Now I’m not a massive fan of clear files, but I can see their uses. The design really comes to life as soon as you put a sheet of paper in there. Perfect if you end up getting handouts during class and don't want to have them get all mixed up in your bag. Although a normal poly pocket would do the same job, it certainly wouldn't be as cute as this clear file!

And there we have it folks, that is the end of the September SoKawaii box review. How did ye find it? Pleasant I hope! This month feels like all the focus was mostly on the plush bag and cup. I’m hoping that next month we might get a better variety of items. I honestly don’t think my shelves could take another cup being added. Let me know in the comments below or on our social media, which item was your favorite and if you have subscribed to SoKawaii as well! Would love to hear from you all.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. At the moment, SoKawaii are shipping their boxes via DHL as Japan Post is still not allowing worldwide postage from Japan. So that’s why at the moment, I have 6 months of Nihon Box stuck in a warehouse in Tokyo. Fingers crossed I can actually get them at some point this year! Thankfully this hasn’t been the case for SoKawaii, which is a blessing! Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

This new anime streaming platform is now coming to the end of its’ first quarter, having just started up back in May. Today I am having a look at what they had to offer to viewers for their third month of screenings. This monthly subscription service currently hosts four films and one season of anime for viewers to either binge watch on their own - or join in on the weekly anime viewing parties over on the Screen Anime Twitter account. Where you can join in on the conversation with fellow anime fans, including the people who brought this unique service to you - in a year where it’s not possible to host the usual anime film festivals. At the moment the films and series that are being shown, are all from the Anime Limited catalogue. This month’s offerings included Lu Over The Wall, Mai Mai Miracle, Ride Your Wave, Eureka Seven Hi Evolution 1 & 2, as well as the second and final season of Silver Spoon.

Not only can you binge watch these animated works over on their site, but they sometimes include the added bonus features, as well as the Dub and Sub versions if available & a weekly watch-a-long party as well. You can join Screen Anime now for only £3.98/mo or for a reduced £39.98/yr, but be aware it is only available in both Ireland and the UK. You can also avail of a 3 day free trial - https://www.screenanime.com/

"Ride_Your_Wave"

The first title I’ll be covering today is a film called - ‘Ride Your Wave’. Which is the latest anime film to have been produced by Science Saru studios and it’s an emotional rollercoaster. The story follows the life of a young college student named Hinako who moves out to an oceanside town, in order to take full advantage of the surf as she attends her classes. Along the way she begins to grow close to a young firefighter named Minato and the two eventually start going out. As they begin to learn more about one another, Minato decides to take up surfing and is guided by his new girlfriend. Tragedy strikes one morning as Minato heads to the beach to practice alone, leaving Hinako completely shattered. Not only did she lose the man she falls in love with, but she also puts down her surfboard for good - as she can no longer face the waves. The story does not end there folks, as magically Minato begins to appear to Hinako in every body of water she sings to. This film does a fantastic job of showcasing just a number of ways some people grieve when they lose someone they love and admire. The emotional storytelling is by far the best feature of this film, but you can not overlook the animation at the same time. With such beautiful scenery involved, I would love to just find the real life location and move there. This is definitely a film worth rewatching again and again, and is sure to become a film festival favorite amongst fans. This could also be easily used as an introductory anime for parents if you wish to get them involved. ‘Ride Your Wave’ is available to view in both English sub and dub on the website. Hopefully there will be news to follow over the coming months about a physical release.

"Lu_Over_the_Wall"

Next up we have ‘Lu Over The Wall’, which is also from Science Suru studios. Interestingly enough both of these titles have the same Director - Masaaki Yuasa, who also directed one of this year's most talked about Netflix originals ‘Japan Sinks: 2020’. I first came across ‘Lu Over The Wall’ back in 2018 at the Irish Japanese Film Festival. Having first watched it in Japanese Dub, the film initially left me with such joy after watching it. It was entirely loveable, some good beats to keep you moving in your seat and once again, it had some beautiful visuals. You can check out my full review of it in the link here: http://comicbuzz.com/lu-over-the-wall-review/

"Mai_Mai_Miracle"

Our third film of the month is ‘Mai Mai Miracle’ from Madhouse studios and director Sunao Katabuchi. This film is categorized as a festival classic, but is the first time I have actually sat down and watched it. It is also a bit of an older title, as it first came out back in 2009, but the visuals still hold strong today. The story follows a young girl named Shinko who is just 9 years old, we watch as she imagines what her countryside home would have looked like centuries ago during a time when it had its own Princess. With a wild and vivid imagination, we see the many adventures she undertakes as well as getting to know her new classmate: Kiiko. All of this is taking place in the Spring of 1955, where kids played exclusively outside in all weather, running through fields, building small dams and just simply being kids. However we also see how such a young girl as Shinko, views and understands the troubles that some adults get into. This is certainly a much watched film if you enjoy slice of life stories. There are moments of harsh realisation, but we also see the beauty of having a childhood free of video games and on demand TV services.

"Eureka_Seven_Film"

Moving on we actually have two more films, with Eureka Seven Hi Evolution 1 & 2. Both of which are available to watch in both English sub and dub. Now I haven’t exactly watched all of the Eureka Seven anime series, so these films left me utterly confused as to what was going on in the story. For instance, Part 1 followed the series from Rentons’ POV which had the awful habit of skipping back and forward and even repeated a scene or two later on. This left me completely baffled as to what was happening throughout the film, it was just a mess trying to piece together the timeline. Now Part 2 didn’t have that problem and we experienced the story from Anemone’s POV, which was from an alternate reality trying to break through the looking glass so to speak. Her story was more of a revenge mission, as the existence of Renton’s reality led to the death of Anemone’s father. These are in fact the first two films in what is to be a trilogy, that takes place both before and during the events of the original anime but by also having its own original story. The third film was slated for last year, but has instead been delayed until 2021. Hopefully that film will bring about a more satisfying end to the trilogy. Overall, I enjoyed the animation, the structure of the first film though was a disaster in my eyes. The second film was miles better, so fingers crossed now for the third. These films are obviously more suited towards existing fans, and I would advise to at least watch the original series before tackling Hi Evolution.

"Silver_Spoon_S2"

And last but not least, we have our anime season. Seeing as last month’s offering was Season 1 of Silver Spoon, it was only right that we had the second and final season to enjoy this month. From the creator of ‘Fullmetal Alchemist’, Hiromu Arakawa comes a vastly different series compared to her previous work. ‘Silver Spoon’ follows the day to day life of first year dairy science student Hachiken. Having come from a working class family in the city, he has zero background in the farming business but over the course of Season One he has learned quite a bit about the life on a working farm. From rearing pigs from birth to slaughter, joining the equestrian club, working an entire summer as a farm hand and even how to butcher up a dear. This Season continued with the same level of energy as the first and was just as enjoyable. With Hachiken now spending more time at the stables than the pig pen, he begins to hone his skills on horseback as well as being landed with new responsibilities. All of which are challenging him to adapt and grow into a very dependable and capable person. It’s not all sugar-cubes however, as Hachiken later learns about the heartache involved when farms are forced to close down. I am actually sad to see this series end, so I will be looking into reading the manga at some point to see if it went further than the show.

And there we have it folks, that has been the July/August offerings over on Screen Anime. If you want to get your own account just click on the link below. They are also offering a three day free trial as well.

https://www.screenanime.com/browse

At the moment there is no app, it is solely just on the website above. But in the future, who knows. Personally I would love to see it added to either Android devices or even the Playstation, seeing as the Funimation app doesn’t even work properly on that still. In the meantime, keep an eye on the Screen Anime social media accounts, as they should be announcing what titles will be appearing next month over the coming days!

It is August already and the World is still in a heap, but thankfully we have boxes like SoKawaii that continue to bring a smile to our faces with their monthly deliveries that land on your doorstep before you even get that dispatch email. Well that’s what happened to me the last two months, this one arrived on a Thursday in Ireland - yet I only got the email on Saturday saying it was leaving Japan! It is a much needed welcome surprise nonetheless, as my travel plans for Japan this year have just been cancelled for the foreseeable future due to travel restrictions.

So regarding August’ box, this month’s theme was “Mystical Forest Camp” - which includes some very useful everyday items, a ReMent figure, adorable Sanrio Tote Bag and more! Now onto that all important information!

So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts. https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiiaugust2020_1"

First off we have a product from the ever popular ReMent franchise, this time from the latest Pokémon release: Utatane Basket. With six very sleepy Pokémon character figures to collect, you are guaranteed one mystery box in this very box. I got the Alolan Vulpix, which comes very well detailed & made - and now sits on my bookshelf with the rest of my ReMent figures.

"sokawaiiaugust_2"

Next up we have two items which go hand in hand with this month’s theme of camping. First up we have the un-announced mystery Sumikko Gurashi item, which is a stainless mug. This interesting looking item looks very ideal to take with you on camping holidays, as it seems as though it can be used directly on a fire to boil water in. As to if the printed on designs will burn off - well I wouldn’t like to be the one that has to test out that theory. This travel mug was available in two similar designs and features what looks to be a pram/bag clip as a handle - which is ideal to attach onto the outside of your rucksack. This item is aimed directly at those adventuring types of people, as I doubt it would be used much whilst sitting in the cupboard at home.

"sokawaiiaugust2020_3"

Our second food related item is this official Studio Ghibli ‘My Neighbour Totoro’ bento box. This two tiered lunch container, also includes a divider between the layers and a fork. With the very recognisable grey coloring and iconic Totoro shaped design on the top, this is a must have item for any household that enjoys making homemade lunches. Although slightly smaller in size than what I was expecting, it is BPA free and for the most part - is Microwave safe! Just remember to remove the lids and fork before nuking that lunch! The only thing about it, is that you can’t simply throw it in the dishwasher. This is a hand wash only container, so make sure to look out for that. Now I’m not entirely sure what kind of lunches I would put in this, so leave me a comment down below as to what would be your ideal first meal when you use this Bento box.

"sokawaiiaugust2020_4"

Now this incredibly gorgeous Sanrio bag was a complete surprise when I got my box, as it was never even hinted at last month! As you can see it is a fairly large tote bag and was also the first item that greeted me when I opened the box. Now the one I received was a Hello Kitty design, which was a collaboration with graphic artist and fashion designer - Jun'ichi Nakahara. He is known as the man who greatly developed the idea of giant anime eyes for shojo manga characters. I highly advise googling his name and looking up his art work in google images, as it is very classic looking, with almost porcelaine qualities to the character designs. It adds a touch of class to what would have been a very plain looking Hello Kitty bag, the best qualities though are the fully zipped openings and the detail inside the bag and separate compartments. Not sure how I will be using this bag yet, as it seems almost too good to use for a quick trip to the shops.

"sokawaiiaugust2020_5"

We are now onto our final two items, starting with this almost familiar looking plushie in the top left hand corner. This furry creature is from the Tanuki & Kitsune plush range, of which I got the Kitsune. Which is the Japanese word for fox, who are often looked upon in religious terms as messengers from God or in Japanese folklore as being tricksters and shapeshifters. My little fox cub looks awfully similar to a Pikachu in their coloring, but is very soft and well stuffed - which makes it a cute companion to have sitting on your shoulder as you're typing away. And last but not least, we have a puffy sticker pack from this years’ best selling game - Animal Crossing. Featuring many of your favorite characters including Tom Nook, Isabelle and Marshal.

There you have it folks, that is everything from August 2020 SoKawaii box, so let’s get on to the subscription details.

"sokawaiiaugust2020_6"

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. At the moment, SoKawaii are shipping their boxes via DHL as Japan Post is still not allowing worldwide postage from Japan. So that's why at the moment, I have 5 months of Nihon Box stuck in a warehouse in Tokyo. Fingers crossed I can actually get them at some point this year! Thankfully this hasn’t been the case for SoKawaii, which is a blessing! Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options - there are savings to be had.

1 MONTH – $35.00/€31.77mo

3 MONTHS – $33.50/€30.40mo

6 MONTHS – $32.00/€29.04mo

12 MONTHS – $31.50/€28.59mo

Better yet, here is a 10% discount code that you can use on your first box!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you liked everything you saw in this review of August’s box, rest assured that the items are different every month. Each box has 6 to 8 items included and a few of them will be revealed online through SoKawaiis’ social media as the weeks go by. September’s box theme is “Too Kawaii For School”, which will feature goods from Sailor Moon, Sanrio & Pokemon, with a few of the products included already announced across their social media.

https://www.sokawaii.com/

Hello everyone!

Now I know I am fairly late on this, but did you know that Anime Limited created their own online film festival service back in May?! They are the masterminds behind the new anime streaming platform known as ‘Screen Anime’, which is a monthly subscription service that changes up its anime offerings each month. At the moment the films and series that are being shown, are all from the Anime Limited catalogue. Each month they host four films and one anime series on their site for fans to enjoy. Last month's offerings included The Anthem of the Heart, Weathering With You, Your Name, Fireworks and Season One of Silver Spoon.

Not only can you binge watch these animated works over on their site, but they also include the added bonus features, Dub and Sub versions if available & a weekly watch-a-long party as well. You can join Screen Anime now for only £3.98/mo or for a reduced £39.98/yr, but be aware it is only available in both Ireland and the UK. You can also avail of a 3 day free trial - https://www.screenanime.com/

"Anthem_of_the_Heart_Key"

Now I have already covered some of these films over the last few years, mostly through the Japanese Film Festival in Ireland (http://www.jff.ie/). Which, fingers crossed, will be back up and running again in the coming months once this pandemic has safely passed.

Our first film - ‘The Anthem Of The Heart’ was written by Mari Okada, who is one of the most prolific writers in the anime scene at the moment. Having not only worked on scripts for both Rozen Maiden, Vampire Knight and A Whisker Away. Her directorial debut was for none other than ‘Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms’. ‘The Anthem of the Heart’ also comes from the animation studio ‘A-1 Pictures’, the studio behind not only Sword Art Online, but also Fairy Tail, Blue Exorcist, GATE and The Seven Deadly Sins.

This film focuses on many different characters, all teenagers going through their own tough challenges. From troubled family dynamics to failed romances, sport injuries that could end a career before it begins and a girl who refuses to speak for ever more, as her words broke up the happy family she thought she had. This film is well worth watching once again and adding to your collection. You can buy it here through this link - https://www.alltheanime.com/products/anthem-of-the-heart-dvd

Also here is a quick link where you can check out my full review that I did of ‘The Anthem Of The Heart’ back in May 2018. http://comicbuzz.com/the-anthem-of-the-heart-review/

"Weathering_with_You_1"

Up next we have “Weathering With You'', which is the latest release from acclaimed animator and filmmaker - Makoto Shinkai. A man that has become just as well known as Hayao Miyazaki for his filmmaking and storytelling talent. His previous works include “5 Centimeters Per Second”, “The Garden of Words” and “Your Name”. There was immense hype when this film was released and rightly so. Not only was it breath-takingly animated, it also showcased some very important issues that need to be addressed. Featuring the dark reality of runaway youths, the increased risk that Global Warming is having on the World and on locations such as Tokyo. As well as the importance of holding on to tradition and history, in this ever evolving society we are living in. Looking back on my review now, I may have been too kind over my score. Although it was a very enjoyable film and one that is still worth adding to your collection - I would have preferred a bit more backstory on Hodaka. You can check out my full review in the link here - http://comicbuzz.com/weathering-with-you-review/

You can also buy your own copy of ‘Weathering With You” here - https://www.alltheanime.com/search?type=product&q=Weathering+with+you

"Your_Name_8"

“Your Name” - a film I was adamant I had a review done on but can not locate. (Believe me, I spent the better part of my day looking for it across harddrives, emails and online!) Another Shinkai masterpiece that was released three years before “Weathering With You”. And is in my opinion, a better film storywise. Where “Weathering With You” was a visual delight and brought up topics that need to be discussed, “Your Name” was a great character driven story. Following a pair of teenagers who had never met and lived thousands of miles apart. It’s more or else similar to the 2006 film “It’s A Boy Girl Thing”, but as an anime. However this film also involves some sort of a time travel paradox, think of the Keanu Reeves film - The Lake House. It has taken inspiration from both films from what I have seen, but it’s unclear if Shinkai has even seen these films anyway. It could all just be a coincidence.

You can buy your copy of “Your Name” now in the link below, as well as a sneak peak at the movie merchandise that is coming to the Anime Limited store soon - https://www.alltheanime.com/search?type=product&q=Your+Name

"fireworks02"

We are now onto “Fireworks”, a film that I have only just watched for the first time thanks to this streaming service. I don’t know how I missed this title when it was first released! Interestingly enough, this anime film is actually based on a live action TV film of the same name that was produced back in 1993. The director for this animated adaptation is Akiyuki Shinbo, who also directed and helped create “Puella Magi Madoka Magica”. This film is much like “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time”, as it also involves a lead character being able to manipulate time in order to get the best scenario possible. All of which involves a girl named Nazuna wanting to run away from her family, soon after learning that she will be transferring schools and her mother will be remarrying. A fellow classmate - Norimichi ends up falling in love with the young girl and does everything he can to help protect her and make her happy. Throw in a mystical marble of sorts that distorts time and reality, and that is more or less the plot of the film. There are some lovely visuals and character performances throughout, but unfortunately the story didn’t hold up much for me. I would have preferred to see some more backstory to the characters, prior to all the drama.

If you want to check “Fireworks” out now, you can buy it through the link here - https://www.alltheanime.com/collections/fireworks

"Silver_Spoon_1"

And lastly we are on to our anime series, with Season One of “Silver Spoon”. Many of you may recognise the character designs as being similar to “Fullmetal Alchemist” - and you would be correct! Following the end of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga series, mangaka Hiromu Arakawa began work on a very different series - Silver Spoon. The coming of age story of a group of students attending an agricultural college, through the eyes of a city boy from Sapporo who has no prior experience of working with animals or farm work. Oddly enough, this was actually a really enjoyable season, something I had very little hopes for when I began watching it. It also was very factually accurate when it came to showing how dairy farms are run, how pigs are reared to be slaughtered and the pure joy young farmers get when they see a brand new Combine Harvester in action! I grew up in the Irish countryside, surrounded by farms and am used to having cattle as neighbours at times. So much so, we had to have a cattle grid in order to stop them wandering into our garden when they break out of the field. So this show brought back a bit of nostalgia for me but ultimately also gave me some insight into what happens on a working farm. This would actually be a great show for kids to watch, but can easily be enjoyed by all ages from what I have experienced. This is also another A-1 Pictures production.

Silver Spoon Season One is well worth giving a go and adding to your collection - https://www.alltheanime.com/collections/silver-spoon/products/silver-spoon-season-1-blu-ray-collectors

And there we have it, that was last months’ Screen Anime selection. The new list has just been released and is now available on the Screen Anime site as you read this. The new selection will be running from the 25th July to the 25th August and will include the following four films and anime season.

*cough cough I now have 8 months of Nihon Box crates stuck in Japan due to Japan Post still not shipping to Ireland*

At the moment, SoKawaii are shipping their boxes via DHL as Japan Post is still not allowing worldwide postage from Japan.

So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts. https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/
