Super Farming Boy is an action-puzzle farming sim. This game is developed by LemonChili Soft and published by Renxo Europe Limited. Super Farming Boy is a game that plays quite like no other, offering a creative and unique experience for players who enjoy farming sims. Super Farming Boy is currently an Early Access Game. This review was done for PC prior to the game’s release.

Super Farming Boy is a single-player game where the story begins on a deceptively calm day. Day one of Spring, Year one, where you are simply tending to your crops, when all of a sudden, chaos strikes. A menacing vacuum-like creature named Korpo appears out of nowhere, devours your mother and destroys your entire farm. With your powers stripped, you are thrust into a quest for growth, vengeance and survival. Korpo now runs the ominous Korpo Corp Inc., a shadowy farming conglomerate that visits you at the end of each day to take your harvested goods in exchange for money. Issuing invoices is quite a brilliant way to put together a bigger farming scheme.

The game opens with a quick but effective tutorial that introduces basic controls like movement and flying, along with how to farm. Each crop acts almost like an ‘attack’. For instance, planting and harvesting corn triggers a horizontal combo attack while tomatoes attack vertically. These attacks can then be used to damage and harvest larger crops that have HP, such as giant carrots with four health. This mechanic makes farming feel dynamic and tactical, turning your humble patch of land into a strategic battlefield. I do have to say that the flow of income in Super Farming Boy is not heavily restricted, giving players greater chances to explore various crops and combos for future upgrades. Building up money is essential as you will unlock power cards with the money you earn each day that give you vital upgrades like flight, a watering can or Combo Vision, which shows which tiles will be affected by combo attacks.

Visually, Super Farming Boy shines with an enchanting art style that’s both whimsical and expressive. The game is full of beautifully animated cutscenes that add heart and personality to its bizarre world. Super Farming Boy reminds me of Cuphead with its exaggerated artwork that resembles 1930s cartoons. The characters, including your adorable living seed companions, are full of charm. Your seeds don’t just sit in your inventory; they follow you around as tiny munchkins waiting to be planted. This adds a sense of warmth and companionship to the experience. Watching a series of combo attacks is satisfying to avoiding ghouls late at night. The animations and graphics are effortless, bringing Super Farming Boy to life. There are some bizarre seasons that you get to farm, which amps the game to an even more exciting level. The soundtrack complements the game’s eccentric atmosphere, with upbeat farm tunes giving way to slightly eerie motifs when Korpo appears, keeping the tone unpredictable.

Gameplay-wise, Super Farming Boy is more than just another cosy sim. While there’s stamina management, where you cannot endlessly perform tasks, the game thoughtfully includes ways you can refill your energy by purchasing food from the town chef. Fever Time is another clever mechanic that allows for instant crop growth within a limited area, ideal for pulling off those satisfying combos and getting a burst of productivity for a great amount of money. The To-Do List helps keep players focused and provides accessible goals without hand-holding too much. Once again, making money feels fair and rewarding, encouraging players to continually invest in Super Farming Boy and their farm.

What I personally love is how Super Farming Boy takes familial farming game mechanics and turns them on their head. The combat-like combo system tied to planting, the oppressive corporate overlord dynamic (almost like dealing with the Devil in Cuphead), and the lack of traditional inventory all felt refreshingly original. I love the playful elements Super Farming Boy brings to the game, which make farming life more endearing and exciting.

We are thankful to have been provided with another code for Super Farming Boy, and Moody absolutely enjoyed the game. ‘I thought Super Farming Boy was such a blast. At first, I did not know what to expect from another farming simulator. But the moment I saw its arty style, which felt as charming and expressive as Cuphead’s, I knew this game would be an experience. I mean, in what other game would your house be a see-through cloud that wakes you up by blowing out air? I just loved how this game was a creative standalone from traditional farming games. The game contains fast-paced elements where some crops do not even take forever to grow, and the combos make it even more fun to plan crops within certain tiles. Having to maintain your daily tasks, go into town and buy items, plant crops, and harvest is so much fun. Nighttime is even more interesting, where ghouls will start to attack you, so it is better to be wary.

What I found even more intriguing was having the ability to unlock upgrades and powers that could help you out even more around your farm. I had played Super Farming Boy prior to its full release, and there were some slight bugs, but the developers were great in responding to those bugs. Overall, everything played out smoothly. The mix of strategy, humour and heart made it one of the most refreshing and enjoyable indie games I’ve played in a while. Plus, Super Farming Boy is a great game to pick back up where you left off whenever you feel like!’

Super Farming Boy is a delightfully quirky and surprisingly strategic farming adventure. With its gorgeous art style, creative mechanics and sinister undertones, it’s definitely one to watch for players looking for something unique in the farming sim genre. Whether you’re here for the combos, the townsfolk interactions, the cutscenes, or the chance to take down Korpo Corp one carrot at a time, Super Farming Boy is definitely worth buying!

Overall: 8.5/10
