Dime Evo are True Wireless Earbuds from Skullcandy. Similar to the Dime Series collection but evolved? The wonderful people at Skullcandy sent us a pair of Dime Evo to review. The Dime Evo earbuds have been designed so people can easily carry around a pair of earbuds with them without any worry. The Dime Evo earbuds have an innovative design that lets you clip them onto your jeans and bag, acting like a keychain. The earbuds are nicely compacted in a case that sells at the price of €49.99.
The packaging for these earbuds are kept simple and complements the Skullcandy brand design. It features a black and orange colour palette that is aesthetically pleasing and goes well with the Skullcandy theme. The box includes the following items: Dime Evo True Wireless Earbuds, ear gels that come in three different sizes (small, medium, and large), a micro-USB charging cable, a user guide and a two-year limited warranty. Almost all of Skullcandy’s earbuds come with additional ear gels, which make it convenient for people to adjust the size to their liking and comfort.
The design of the Dime Evo earbuds comes in a selection of three different colours: True Black, Bone, and Preppy Sage. The pair we were sent was in the True Black colour. Now, the design of these earbuds are ones we have not quite seen anywhere else, making them an extremely interesting and worthwhile buy. The case of the earbuds is compact and unique, which has a keyring clip that can clip onto a number of items. The clip can be used to attach the earphones to your bag or jeans, which is very convenient. Compared to the other dime earbuds, the earbuds are usually exposed, but with the Dime Evo casing, the earphones are well covered. This was always something we wished for with the other Dime pairs, as the exposed part of the earbuds was easily scratched or damaged. Having the buds encased is great protection and a case themselves. The Dime Evo case is larger than the other Dime series earbuds, but it still can fit into your pocket. The size of the case is almost similar to a 25 ml Eau de perfume bottle. A cylinder case has a length of 3.7 inches and a width of 1.2 inches. The outside of the case is almost transparent, and once the earbuds are charging, you can see the light shining through. The inside of the case is all a shiny black, where the earbuds sit. The earbuds look exactly the same as the others in the Dime series. Also, the charging port can be found at the bottom. The Dime Evo weighs around 65g, which is heavier than the other dimes but still is light and easy to carry around. The charging case is about the size of the inside of an average palm and is made out of plastic. The case is very smooth, and the design is slick. Some of the other specifications for these earbuds are the following: The connection type is Bluetooth 5.3, impedance is 16Ω±15%, the driver diameter is 6 mm, the THD is <3%, the sound pressure level is 104dB±3dB, and lastly, the frequency response is 20Hz – 20KHz.Preset EQ modes and five-band EQ mode, call and media controls, activate voice assistant, low latency audio mode, multipoint pairing, stay-aware mode, Skullcandy App, smart mic, media controls, custom button settings and use either bud solo. They are great for the outdoors and working out as they come with IPX4 sweat and water resistance. Many of these specifications have been upgraded in comparison to the previous Dime earbuds.
In our test for the battery life, each earbud lasted over 8 hours before needing a recharge. The case dies after recharging the earphones around five times. The earbuds being able to last this long is impressive as it has a greater battery life than previous Dime earbuds. A total of up to 36 hours can be used with one charging of the case. If you use one earbud at a time, the earbuds can last you up to 72 hours! It took around an hour to fully charge the case, but a 10-minute charge can last up to 2 hours. When the case is being charged, you can tell if it’s fully charged when the dot next to the charger has stopped flashing and remains the white colour. Honestly, the battery life for these earbuds are quite impressive.
The sound quality for earbuds are pretty good for the price you are paying. Now, obviously, some of the price goes to the innovative case design, but the sound quality, rest assured, is good. As the earbuds have good ear cupping, it almost creates a noise-cancelling environment within the ear. Now, the Dime Evo buds are compatible with the Skullcandy App, which means that listeners can customise hand control buttons and mess around with the equaliser. In the previous Dime series, compatibility was not possible, which is actually a great addition to this pair of earbuds, giving listeners a bit more customizability to their liking. As someone who has previously used the Dime 2 / 3 earbuds and is highly fond of them, I believe the Dime Evo earbuds were even better. The sound quality was a lot more crisp and was not so bass-heavy. Something even better was that it seemed there was a slight difference in the mic off these earbuds where not much feedback was put through, and the voice was somewhat illegible. To test the sound quality, we listened to several music genres, some more bass, instrumental and soft tune heavy.
We found that the earbuds had good sound quality at any volume level lower than about 75%, sound quality felt a bit scorched if the volume exceeded that level (depending on the type of music you are listening to), but it was highly unlikely that the volume level ever needed to be raised that far up. The sound quality was clear, and you could hear the tunes with somewhat of a separation. Even the voice would be picked up with no sense of muffling. Besides listening to music, using them to watch shows/movies is also really good and no interference or sounds are obstructed. Honestly, they are perfect for casual listening: pretty much the ideal earbuds you could get. On top of that, if you want to use them while gaming, you can do that too. Anything that has mellow and soft tunes is perfect for listening to. Not that, but we used these earbuds while playing Valorant (an fps-heavy game), and loud noises would have good feedback, like gun shooting. Because of loud noises in the game, it would not entirely separate out footsteps, but in quieter situations, it did a good job at picking up sound and created an audible space from left ear to right.
Now, some comparisons were already made whilst talking about the Dime Evo earbuds, but specifically, we can compare them to the Let’s compare the Take a Hike Dime 2 True Wireless Earbuds. The Take a Hike earbuds were a limited edition pair of earbuds that were a bit more expensive than the base Dime 2 earbuds but had similar features except for design. The Take a Hike earbuds sell for €45, whereas the Dime Evo Earbuds sell for €49.99. A major difference would definitely be the overall design and specification upgrades that the Dime Evo has brought. When comparing the mic, the Take a Hike Dime 2 earbud mic was not great whatsoever as so much static and outside noise would get picked up that would muffle the user’s voice. On the other hand, we found that the Dime Evo earbud mics were much better as the voice was eligible, and no static noises were picked up. However, if the earbuds were used outside, they would pick up the air quite a lot, so in a home setting, they are pretty decent to use.
Earbud comfort between the two are quite similar; if we were to compare them to the Dime 3 earbuds, I would say that they are exactly the same. The Dime 3 and Dime Evo earbuds have the exact button layout, lighting and earplug design. It seems that they do not differ whatsoever in that sense, and honestly is not something to complain about because no discomfort comes from it. In addition to this, the sound quality I felt was similar to that of the Dime 3 earbuds but did slightly differ from the Take a Hike earbuds. As the Dime Evo has compatibility with the Skullcandy app, it allows for the audio settings to be maxed out for better use, which is something that is quite nice.
Lastly, one amazing feature these earbuds come with is one being mono-mode, where you can easily use one earbud at a time even; when switching them out, they automatically connect. With IPX4, there is no worry about sweat destroying the buds. Perfect for when out in the rain as well. These earbuds can even connect to your Gmail account, which allows them to be found with the ‘find my earbud’ feature just in case you lose them. The simple accessibility, creative case design that is perfect for the ‘on the go earbuds’ and effortlessly good sound quality make the Dime Evo earbuds perfect for anyone to use. Additionally, the battery life is better than most earbuds, which will keep from your daily charging worries. For only €49.99, it can not get better than this for such great quality earbuds! Make sure you go out and buy yourself the Dime Evo Earbuds!
