Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) has just spent 5 years in jail. She gets out on good behaviour and immediately goes back to her old ways; acquiring new make up, clothes and a hotel room for the night. She meets up with her old friend/ partner, Lou (Cate Blanchett), and together, they begin to hatch a plan… The first Monday in May is the annual Met exhibition/ gala and some of the world’s most expensive jewels will be there. What they really want though is a Cartier necklace, called ‘The. Toussaint’. Three weeks prior to the Ball, they assemble a team of women, all of whom are very good at what they do. Then the plan to execute the most daring and perfect heist begins…
This, the 8th in a franchise that in the past has been quite male driven, sees the Ocean’s story go in a new and interesting way. Danny (George Clooney), Debbie’s brother, is now recently deceased and she’s doing the only thing she knows how.
Sometimes you wonder if with the cast being made up of so many strong and well known actresses, whether the story itself would be weak.. No need to worry though because everyone plays their part to perfection. You also wonder if the heist genre has been done to death but I found this one to be brilliant and entertaining.
A really great story and a brilliant cast makes this definitely one to watch. Unlike some other franchises, you don’t have to have seen the previous Ocean’s movies to understand the plot; it’s just a good old fashioned heist movie, with lots of great plot twists. Also unlike most movies you don’t actually know if they’ll get away with it or not. It’s not a straight forward case of the good guys always winning in the end.
A movie that pretty much everyone will love; mates night out or a date night, Ocean’s 8 will keep you entertained from start to finish.
Overall: 8/10
