“Too Cute To Spook”

Hello everyone and welcome back once again to another subscription box review with us over on ComicBuzz. Today let’s take a look back at what was included in October’s edition of SoKawaii, which ran with the theme of ‘Too Cute To Spook’. We had six items this month that ranged from homewares, a plush, an accessory and beauty, from the likes of Sanrio, Pokémon and Twisted Wonderland. So before we get this review started, let’s take a look at who SoKawaii is!

For those of you that don’t know – SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 5 to 7 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep each month. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media accounts. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts, particularly their Instagram one – https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiioct2021_1"

Our first item this month is far from spooky, with this bright pink Pokemon alarm clock. This item was available in four designs and colors, including pink, yellow, green and purple. As you can see from the pink version above, it features Slowpoke, Mew, Luvdisc and Alcremie. This is a battery operated clock, with the battery not included. It is rather cute, great for a bedroom decoration.

"sokawaiioct2021_2"

Next up is this Makeup Brush Cleaner and stand from Sanrio. Featuring two of my favorite girls - Kuromi and My Melody. Now this is a rather practical item I must say. As you can see from the packaging above, all you need to do is take the lid off of the tub, add some water or cleaning solution and wash your makeup brushes in it by moving the bristles along the pointed spikes at the bottom which help to remove the likes of foundation from the brush. Now I’m not one to wear much makeup, so I’m unsure as to how well this item actually works but going by just the design alone - it is actually quite clever and well thought out. And who knows, maybe it also works on kids' paint brushes?

"sokawaiioct2021_3"

Moving on now to our Twisted Wonderland item, with this acrylic stand featuring Idia Shroud. With one of seven characters included in every box, its a series that is still rather unheard of here outside of Japan. Twisted Wonderland is actually a Japanese mobile game created by Aniplex and Disney. Interestingly enough, the character designs, scenario and concept was actually created by the author of Black Butler - Yana Toboso. There is even an anime in the works at the moment and should hopefully be released sometime next year over on Disney+.

"sokawaiioct2021_4"

Our next item is a Narikiri face mask from Sanrio. I’m unsure as to how many varieties of designs that were available, as there were at least two. I received the Hello Kitty design, while the Pompompurin one is advertised in the leaflet. These character designed face masks make a great inexpensive souvenir and are a good seller in Japan. This particular one is rose scented and claims to be packed full of everything your skin needs to feel revitalised including ingredients such as witch hazel water, damask rose, hydrolyzed collagen and soybean extract, it will also leave your skin smelling like roses. If you missed out on getting your own face mask last month, then do not fear as ToFu Cute is also selling them over on their UK based website and store based in Portsmouth.

TofuCute: https://www.tofucute.com/narikiri-face-pack-mask-kawaii-hello-kitty~p4970.html

"sokawaiioct2021_5"

"sokawaiioct2021_6"

Okay so who here also loves Aggretsuko? Exactly, practically everybody that has come across her! Retsuko is a 25year old red panda, working in the accounting department of a Japanese business. She is the most realistic Sanrio character I have ever come across, as she depicts the many ups and downs of being single, dating and working life. In order to blow off some steam, she goes on solo trips to a karaoke booth to play some heavy metal as she screams out her frustrations. It is definitely an entertaining watch, and you can catch it all now over on Netflix. Season Four is set to hit screens shortly, on the 16th December. So in order to get on the hype train, everyone received this Two sided Aggretsuko pouch. Where one side shows her calm demeanor, the other has her Rage side! It’s a small zipped pouch that you can attach to your bag with enough room inside for a couple of coins.

"sokawaiioct2021_7"

And our last item this month is this Halloween inspired Cinnamoroll plush. This exclusive Halloween plush takes our normal Cinnamoroll design and makes it a tad more magical. It’s ears now have a colorful fade on them from purple to orange on the tips, with both bat, black stars and spider web designs printed on. The plush also has a small black witches hat attached, a black and orange cape and the cutest of pumpkin wands attached to their right hand. With the addition of this new plush, I now have a trio of Sanrio Halloween plushies to break out each year. All thanks to the last three years of the October SoKawaii box. I wonder just what character we will be receiving in 2022?!

And there we have it folks, that was the end of our October box review from SoKawaii. What did you think of this one? Let us know by reaching out to us across our social media accounts. So let’s continue with how you can get your very own SoKawaii box, as well as a small discount for all your first time buyers!

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. SoKawaii are back to shipping their boxes via Japan Post, so delivery may take a number of weeks. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 Month – $35.00 (€29.00mo roughly)

3 Months – $33.50 (€28.00mo roughly)

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)

Better yet, here is a $3 discount code that you can use on your first box by clicking this link!http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you enjoyed October’s box, then just wait for Novembers’! It’s theme is “Wish Upon A Star”, which will feature a number of items from Sanrio, Pokémon and Cardcaptor Sakura. That box is already sold out and on the way to me and will include an exclusive Kuromi Pastel Rainbow plushie. Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for – so go have your say now! Also make sure and use that special discount code I left you all above!

‘Bakemono Story’

Hello everyone and welcome back once again to another subscription box review. Today let’s take a look at what was included in October's edition of Nihon Box. I have been looking forward to this particular box, as it will be focusing on Halloween so there is bound to be a good number of treats inside for all! This months’ theme is ‘Bakemono Story’, with Bakemono being another word for Yokai or creatures that change shape such as kitsune or tanuki, which are monsters from Japanese folklore. This months’ box also includes a number of items from a vast number of very well known anime franchises including Pokémon, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Assassination Classroom and Chainsaw Man. So let’s get this review started with a quick note on who Nihon Box is and how you can get your very own!

Nihon Box is a Japanese monthly subscription service that handpicks at least 6 items each month that are almost exclusive to Japan and ships them straight to your door. Their items are a mixture of Otaku Anime related merchandise and figures, as well as traditional Japanese items, from sweets to tableware. All of this is available to subscribe to monthly, just keep reading along to see just how affordable it can be.

Like SoKawaii, the more months you pay upfront the cheaper the price for individual boxes will be. https://www.nihonbox.com/en

Monthly is €29.99 plus shipping costs

3 Months is a single payment of €86.97, making each box €28.99, plus shipping costs.

6 Months is a single payment of €170.94, making each box €28.49, plus shipping costs.

Due to the latest European VAT legislation, the overall cost after shipping has increased slightly. The folks behind Nihon Box have done all they can to make this transition as simple as possible, so they have taken the necessary steps & changes in order to include the VAT directly in the subscription’s price. This change will normally be effective starting from the next renewal of your subscription, with the addition of the VAT in the final price (19% for Germany). And from August of this year, as a small gift of appreciation to their overseas customers they will be including a 1000yen gift card to their YattaJapan.com store. As an idea of how much the charge has gone up, prior to August I was paying €32.89 a month. The new price I pay now is €40.45 a month, which is a nice increase but I believe the value is still there within the box. Now once it arrived in Ireland, I have been charged customs through An Post. Totalling just under €9euro the first month, with this particular box being around the €10 mark on top of the €40.45 I pay each month, making this a rather expensive price hike in the end. However this is all due to inflation and the recent customs changes within the EU, whilst Nihon Box is still cramming in as much value into the box as possible from their side.

Here is a link to their FAQ page, just in case you’re wondering if they ship to your country: https://www.nihonbox.com/en/nihonbox/faq

"nihonboxoct2021_1"

Our first item this month is from Chainsaw Man, which has made a big impact in the anime and manga community in recent years and is set to be a massive success when the anime drops from Studio MAPPA possibly next year. Featured in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump, the story involves an alternate world to ours based in 1997 where humans true fears can become personified into monsters known as devils. These monsters are hunted by people known as Devil Hunters, with this show following one person in particular - Denji. So if you are a fan of the manga series thus far, you are sure to be excited about this item, as Nihon Box has included the above house mat featuring the Chainsaw Man himself getting ready to cause some carnage! Hopefully this will not be the last time we see this series being featured in the box.

"nihonboxoct2021_2"

Our next item is for all you Jujutsu Kaisen fans out there, with this strong cotton tote bag. A fine size indeed and one that would have been ideal for all of you going out trick or treating this past Halloween night. This bag was available in four different designs, each featuring a different exorcist from the series, including Gojo Satoru, Yuji Itadori, Nobara Kugisaki and Megumi Fushiguro. With each image being taken from a scene from the hit anime series.

"nihonboxoct2021_3"

Our third item this month features the most dangerous but nuturing teacher in the entire anime world - Koro sensei from Assassination Classroom. I have never seen such a well depicted plush such as this before, it has Koro sensei perfectly designed right down to the very last tentacle. There is something about his goofy smile that just encourages you to just keep going - ‘Ganbatte!’. The Assassination Classroom manga and anime franchsie both finished up in 2016, so it is so nice to see the show still getting so much love even today that a plush such as this has been included in the box. Well done to the team that handpicked the products for the box, ye all did a great job!

"nihonboxoct2021_4"

"nihonboxoct2021_5"

Now let’s continue as we get to the halfway point of this box. Next up is a Pokémon clear file folder from the ‘Sepia Graffiti’ range. Now I have actually lost track as to how many times this particular Pokémon range has been included in these subscription boxes, although it has become a tad repetitive it has also helped build up the collection if you have also been enjoying these particular designs. This particular clear file first went on sale back in 2018, so this design range is a bit old but mustn’t have done very well in its sales for Nihon Box to be able to acquire its remaining stock for its boxes. In my opinion the range is just adorable, with its classic Pokémon designs which reminds me of its early beginnings back in the 90s. A great piece of nostalgia for all us OG fans.

"nihonboxoct2021_6"

Next up is certainly a special sweet treat that I highly enjoyed consuming on Halloween. With this packet of Karintó Kuroppi, a wheat flour ‘biscuit’ dipped in black sugar and sprinkled with chopped peanuts. Don’t let the appearance fool you, (even though it does seem to resemble cat turds), it was oddly delicious and I certainly couldn't compare it to anything that we have over here in Ireland. It had a strong enough flavour and was more designed to just nibble on now and again. Unfortunately I managed to finish the entire packet whilst watching a few episodes of Gargoyles over on Disney+. The one good thing about this treat, is that seeing as it had zero chocolate involved there was no risk of anything melting during shipping.

"nihonboxoct2021_7"

So for the many of you that have already enjoyed Demon Slayer, you would remember that Tanjiro’s mentor Urokodaki wore a red tengu mask. Well there is a small porcelain one included in this month's box, very similar to the one seen in the anime but instead it features a white mustache and eyebrows. This is our ‘Made in Japan’ exclusive piece of culture and is also known as an Omen Tengu.

"nihonboxoct2021_8"

Speaking of Demon Slayer, each October box also included a gachapon from the show. Inside is a single character from the show, out of a total of six to collect. These mini figures are known as cable huggers and can clip onto the end of your charging cable in order to protect it from bending. And who did I get in my box, none other than the cry baby himself - Zenitsu.

"nihonboxoct2021_9"

And last but now least, we have our final item in this 1000 Yen gift card from Yatta Japan, which can be used on their website. Don’t delay in ordering for too long however, as these gift cards expire on New Years Eve. It can be used at check out, on all items except pre-orders. So watch out for that folks, also you can only use one card per transaction, Shipping is also a bit pricey for those of us in Ireland, as they only offer express shipping. Also don’t forget that you will have to pay Customs separately for anything from outside the EU through An Post when it arrives in the country. So it all adds up unfortunately.

So there we have it everyone, that was October’s Nihon Box. Did you like it? If so, comment down below or tag us on our social media to let us know what was your favourite item and if you have gotten your own subscription. Nihon Box always does their best to follow the latest anime trends as well as finding items from fan favorite shows in order to always appeal to their customer base. With items from Demon Slayer, Pokémon, Jujutsu Kaisen and even the latest Shonen Jump hit - Chainsaw Man. They not only source out some decent quality figures and plushies, but they also make sure that each month their box represents another unique aspect of Japan – from its food, to its culture, art, history and beliefs. It’s a well rounded box, for both anime and cultural fans. This box’s theme was “Bakemono Story”, and each pamphlet in every box also includes a detailed section called “Discover Japan”. This month’s topic was about the many cultural events that take place in October. From ‘Tomin no hi’ to ‘Sports Days’, to the latest international holidays they celebrate including Halloween and Oktoberfest. It’s details such as these that make this subscription box so unique and talked about.

Natsuo Fuji is just your typical high school boy, who has a massive crush on his teacher Ms Tachibana. Since there is zero chance he will ever get to go out with her, he agrees to attend a mixer with his friends in order to meet some cute girls. Whilst out he gets talking to Rui, a quiet but straight talking girl who persuades him to follow her home to do the ‘deed’. Thinking that they will never see one another again, Natsuo returns home to the news that his widowed father is getting remarried and she is on the way over with her two daughters - Rui and Ms Hina Tachibana. Let this chaotic new family dynamic begin, as Natsuo must learn to live with the woman he lost his virginity to and the one he wishes he could sleep with!

Well this is an anime that is just filled with drama and questions around romance within blended families and the morals that surround them. It initially began as Natuso having a long standing crush for his teacher Ms Hina Tachibana. In order to try and get past his one sided romance, he ended up sleeping with Rui, who inevitably ended up being the teacher's younger sister. As fate would have it, they all ended up under the one roof when their single parents remarried thus creating this incredibly complicated family. Following the initial revelation, the show then turns direction into Natuso and Rui keeping their first ‘encounter’ a secret from everyone and Natsuo also trying to resist all urges to pounce on Hina. The story further develops when Hina’s secret relationship is exposed, Natsuo acts upon his feelings, Hina attempts to play the older sister and obviously Rui ends up transferring to the same school.

So there is clearly a reason this show is marked as an 18 classification, both for the nature of the story and the numerous naked scenes included. It’s a pretty raunchy show at times and has a pretty narrow audience, however even though the premise of the show will be too much for many people to overlook - the character development, plot progression and the overall conclusion of the show is pretty well thought out! I can not falter the script whatsoever, it always keeps both feet in reality with its character reactions and inevitable consequences. We see the challenges that come about when step siblings develop romantic feelings for one another, normal high school antics, a school trip and even Natsuo thinking about his career as he throws himself back into his writing again towards the end thanks to the members of the Literature Club. Hina on the other hand is walking a tightrope, as her relationship to a married man is exposed and later we see how the cycle is repeating itself once more when the origins of which are revealed. With Hina now in the opposite role, her career ends on a cliff edge as well when a picture of her school trip antics lands on the Principal's desk. Its an inevitable conclusion to the series, a sad one at that but one that is more realistic than the hopeful happily ever after many would have been expecting from the series. As to if the anime’s ending is the same as how the manga series ended, I’m unsure as the manga concluded over a year after the anime did.

Speaking of which, the manga was created by Kei Sasuga, the same author behind the one shot harem romance ‘GE - Good Ending’. The ‘Domestic Girlfriend’ manga ran in Weekly Shónen Magazine from 2014 upto just last year in 2020, with a total of 28 volumes released with 11 extra chapters bundled together in one last volume. The English translation is being handled by Kodansha USA, with the volumes only being available in a digital format. The anime adaptation was then aired in 2019, with a total of 12 episodes all handled by studio Diomedéa. The same studio behind ‘My Girlfriend is Shobitch’, ‘Girlish Number’, ‘Squid Girl’ and ‘Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren’t They?’. This anime release is being handled by the dedicated team over at MVM Entertainment, giving it a BluRay only release.
