Appetite of the Abyss is a survival cooking roguelite where players must feed an abyssal creature to keep it from turning on their village. Each run combines card-based building, strategic cooking, and forward planning against visible, escalating threats.
Players build temporary structures using a limited deck of cards. Buildings consume shared resources, occupy scarce space, and expire after producing a finite output, forcing constant adaptation rather than fixed builds.
Cooking is driven by preparation choices rather than reflexes. Meals are defined by how they are cooked—stirring style, heat level, and chopping method—and monsters have hidden preferences that are never directly revealed. The same recipe can succeed or fail depending on how it is prepared, with players learning through feedback and consequences.
Each run features a different creature with unique traits, hunger decay, and aggression. Monsters respond differently to mistakes, encouraging players to adjust their strategy every run.
Before danger strikes, players choose between forecasted paths that hint at incoming raids, environmental effects, or events. These paths vary in difficulty and reward, allowing players to plan ahead or take calculated risks.
Between runs, players earn Monster’s Gold to unlock permanent upgrades, including new cards, improved cooking options, and deeper monster interactions. At the end of each run, monsters judge player performance through reactive dialogue.
