ComicBuzz Chats With Frank Cho

With the launch of his art exhibition today at New York’s Philippe Labaune Gallery, we are delighted to be joined by illustrator, cartoonist, and writer Frank Cho.

Hi Frank, it’s so lovely to have you here with us.

Could you please introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, everyone. I’m Frank Cho, creator of Liberty Meadows, Jungle Girl, Skybourne, and Fight Girls. I’m also a writer and artist on Savage Wolverine, Shanna the She-Devil, The Mighty Avengers, and many other titles at Marvel Comics. I’m currently the cover artist for Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, and Catwoman for DC Comics.

How does it feel to have your art exhibition at the Philippe Labaune Gallery this Fall?

I am absolutely excited. It’s a great honor to be showcased at the prestigious Philippe Labaune Art Gallery in Manhattan. The owner, Philippe Labaune, and curator, Nathaniel Pallant, have been a dream to work with. What I really value about Philippe and Nathaniel is how transparent and reliable they are. They take a very personalized approach — it feels like a real partnership, not just a business.

In preparation for your art exhibition, did you find any art that you had forgotten about?

It was a walk down memory lane as I retrieved my artwork from storage in preparation for this art exhibit. The pleasant surprise was the varied and sheer amount of work I’ve done over my career. I hope the fans will enjoy the best examples of my work from different genres, as I did creating them.

Looking at your older art, how do you feel you have grown as an artist?

I’ve grown as an artist over the years, yet I still feel I’m progressing and evolving. This may sound strange, but whenever I look at my art, I see all the flaws, struggles, and missteps. I always see room for improvement. I believe my hypercritical eye and need for self-improvement keep me grounded and help me grow and evolve as an artist.

Is there a particular illustration or art project that you hold dear to your heart?

I feel I’ve done pretty much everything I’ve wanted to do in mainstream comics. Although there are a few creator-owned books I’m in the midst of, I can’t announce them yet. With several classic books in the public domain now, such as Sherlock Holmes, The Princess of Mars, Tarzan, and King Kong, I’m looking forward to expanding my art to include illustrations and paintings.

What can you tell us about the upcoming art exhibition at Philippe Labaune Gallery?

The owner, Philippe Labaune, exhibition curator Nathaniel Pallant, and I each contributed distinct perspectives to select a unique and delightful blend of work, ranging from comic book art to never-before-seen personal pieces. For me, this collaboration is about more than just one exhibition. It’s about building something long-term with a team where Philippe brings visionary leadership and design sensibility, and Nathaniel provides curatorial expertise and an artist’s eye. I’m continually impressed by Philippe’s generosity and by Nathaniel’s discerning taste. I believe this exhibit will impress and delight everyone.
