Many games fall under the roguelike genre, but Turnip Boy stands out with its story-driven and quirky mechanics. This review was done for the PC, but the game is also available for the Xbox series and Switch.
Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is a single-player game where you play as a troublesome turnip, Turnip Boy. Turnip Boy embarks on a thrilling adventure to rob a bank after the disastrous events from Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion. He partners up with the leader of the Pickle Gang to execute the weirdest heist of all time. In the game, you aim to buy items off the dark web, steal as much money as possible, recycle weapons and unlock upgrades. As Turnip Boy carries out this heist, he encounters many various enemies and bosses who try to stop him from completing the greatest heist of all time.
The controls for Turnip Boy Robs a Bank are extremely simple. Once you start the game, you are given a tutorial by Dillitini, the Pickle Gang leader, who goes over the controls of the game. As you start to progress with the game, there are other characters you meet who explain the other mechanics. One really helpful character you will meet is the elevator operator, who will tell you about each room you enter. The controls work very smoothly, and there’s no delay in them. I like the option for being able to change the crosshair and enemy outline. This allows players to pick from a selection that they are most comfortable with.
The art style of Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is pixel art, which is charming and extremely colourful. The game has a sense of liveliness to it through the expression of 2D visuals, from character designs to details in the environment. The game is full of humour and absurdness, which is complemented by the cute art style this game portrays. The environments are inviting, unique and whimsical. So much detail is put into this game, and the character design is beyond phenomenal. The art style really brings out the personality of the game, which is highly engaging for the players. The art style is 100% my favourite thing about this game. Both in Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion and Turnip Boy Robs a Bank games, the comical side and attention to detail with each character you interact with is done so well. Even the enemies are so cute yet intimidating. They all fall under the category of food yet bring such a vibe to the game. Besides; just the visuals, the game does an excellent job with its soundtrack. The fact that you can collect tracks as a task within the game to grow your music library is such a fun way to get players in control of what they want to hear while playing a game. The soundtrack selection is also really good, as it ranges from subtle music to some pretty amps. With a range of blazing guns, the soundtrack is filled with immersive and catchy tunes.
If you have played the first game, you will notice that there is a difference in the play style. The first game was more of a dungeon crawler with a mix of combat, puzzle solving, and questing, whereas this game is a roguelike, which is heavily focused on combat. I do like the fact that the two games differ in play style but still hold some similarities, as this allows for a range of players to try both styles within the same comical realm. The aim of the game is where you have to rob a bank as Turnip Boy and explore different rooms that differ after each run. As you collect money through stealing gems, shaking down civilians, and shooting enemies, you can buy items from the dark web that will help you rob more money, unlock better upgrades such as longer timer, more damage dealt, or even be able to recycle new weapons you find to build your gun armoury.
Now, I am a big fan of the first game, and to my surprise, I did not expect the sequel to be so different. Even though it was quite a different jump from the first game, it was just as thrilling and fun. There are so many things about this game that I just loved. The hats. None of these games ever stop with the hats, and the uncontrollable amount you collect in this game is ridiculous, but I love it. Some hats are easter eggs from other indie games, which I find quite interesting. Each hat can be used in a different situation, and it’s a fun way to get players to talk to NPCs and learn more about the story. The phone on Turnip Boy is also such a cool feature, as you can control the music you want to hear, check on the map, check tasks, look at the photos you took, and even get a train ticket. The game is filled with so many melee and gun options that Turnip Boy can discover that help him better on his adventure. Each weapon is unique to the other, deals various amounts of damage and has quite wacky designs. All in all, everything about this game is made so well, and really gets the player immersed with the vibrant visuals, environments and guns! At some stages, it becomes a shooting havoc.
Turnip Boy Robs a Bank took me about 5 hours to complete the full game, and then I spent a few hours trying to do the sidequests to get the 100% completionist route in the game. It seems that there may be a bug with the achievements, as the dark web one does not register as completed when all items have been purchased. Hopefully, this can be patched in the next update for the game.
Turnip Boy Robs a Bank is a sequel game to Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion. If you have or have not played the first game, this should not stop you from checking out this game. Turnip Boy Robs a Bank has humour, charming, vibrant visuals and immersive tunes to get the player all amped up for the greatest heist of all time. If you think a roguelike game with imaginative character designs, dialogue and story is for you, then you have to check out Turnip Boy Robs a Bank!
