New York City, and it’s pouring with rain. John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is running through the busy streets with his dog. A countdown has been announced for a bounty on John’s head, worth $14million and the clock is ticking. Every low-life, criminal, bounty hunter and thief has been notified by text of the payout for killing John, which takes effect at 6pm. The clock hits 6 and John must start running for his life. He leaves his dog in a taxi heading towards the Continental Hotel and it’s not long before he’s spotted.. The race is on and John Wick must use every skill he possesses to stay alive…
This is the third movie in the John Wick series, with the first released back in 2014 and second in 2017. The whole story started back when retired hit-man, John Wick’s puppy was killed by Russian mobsters. The puppy in question was a final gift from his recently deceased wife, and that plus the attempted robbery of his 1969 Mustang throws him over the edge and he returns to the career he swore to leave behind. The second movie saw John bound in a blood debt to an Italian crime lord, and when he goes to make good on his side, he is dragged into something which will ultimately lead to him having a huge bounty on his head and the Organisation he works for making him persona non grata.
The story arc in ‘John Wick: 3 – Parabellum’ (the Latin for ‘prepare for war’) continues where the second film ended… The beauty of the John Wick movies is that if you have seen the previous two then you will also hit the ground running when the story begins. You know exactly what you are going to get with this movie and fans of the other two and of Keanu himself will love it.
The body count and methods of killing are astonishing and quite graphic in places. The action is pretty much non-stop and sometimes it almost feels like you are watching a computer game being played. John Wick is an unstoppable killing machine and he uses whatever he has to hand to defeat his attackers and stay alive.
If you loved the other two then you will probably love this one as well. As corny as it sounds, ‘John Wick: 3 – Parabellum’ is a total rollercoaster ride. Strap yourself in and prepare for death, destruction and killings the likes of which you’ve never seen before. It did feel a tiny bit long though and just as you think it’s going to end, it sets off in a whole new direction. That being said, make sure you go see it on a big screen.
Overall: 8.5/10
