Wish Upon A Star

Well hello again and welcome back for another So Kawaii subscription box review. Each month I take a look into what has been included in the most recent of Japanese anime subscription boxes from both So Kawaii and Nihon Box. Today's entry is none other than November's edition of So Kawaii, which ran with the theme of “Wish Upon A Star”. A theme that included such fan favorite franchises, including Cardcaptor Sakura, Pokemon, Sanrio and Sumikkogurashi. So before we begin looking at what was inside, let’s just do a recap on the company that makes these addictive boxes.

For those of you that don’t know – So Kawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at So Kawaii handpicks 5 to 7 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, packs them up in a very decorative box and sends it straight to your doorstep each month. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media accounts. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts, particularly their Instagram one – https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiinov2021_1"

So let’s start off with our first item this month, which comes straight from Sanrio with this adorable Little Twin Stars 'cosme case’. Designed in the shape of a star, with images of Kiki & Lala riding on a magical unicorn with their castle floating on a cloud behind them. This decorative storage box is ideal to help declutter your desk or make-up table, whilst also adding a splash or kawaii to the room.

"sokawaiinov2021_2"

Next up are two items from the San-X brand - Sumikkogurashi. The one on our left is a squishy Ebifurai no Shippo, who is a leftover tail of fried shrimp. This item is incredibly pleasing to just squish in between your hands, I can fully understand now why people have come to be fascinated with items such as this. It also has a rather pleasing scent to it, I am still unsure what exactly it is but I think it’s something like vanilla pudding. This item was one of many characters that were available at random in every box last month, that either came as a squishy bread or a candy pouch.

Our second Sumikkogurashi item is this wooden bookmark which was also entirely made in Japan according to the leaflet. With four character duo designs available at random, I was happy to see that Ebifurai no Shippo returned once again but was featured sitting on top of her friend Tonkatsu. Now I adore books and have gathered quite a collection of bookmarks over the years, from ordering online and in stores. However I must say this one is quite adorable, never have I owned a wooden bookmark before.

"sokawaiinov2021_3"

Moving on, we have our Pokémon item in this latest Re-Ment “Starrium” Season 2 collection. This series has a total of six designs to collect, of which I received the Pikachu and Eevee duo sitting upon a cloud with a starry night sky behind them. It’s almost a shame that you only get one of the designs in every box, as these Re-Ment figures are so addictive to collect as you will always crave a complete set once you see the various designs. This one in particular has now been added to my now full shelf of other Re-Ment figures from various other series including Pokémon, Kirby and San-X.

"sokawaiinov2021_4"

Our largest item this month came in the form of this Kuromi plush from Sanrio. Now you would normally expect to see Kuromi in her iconic black and white colors, even a dark shade of purple would be understandable. However in this month's box, Kuromi has been transformed into this pastel rainbow plush, much like a large TsumTsum. Rather unusual and certainly out of character for the mischievous punk rabbit. However this item is rather unique, as it was made by Sanrio especially for this very box - so you won’t find this anywhere else in the World.

"sokawaiinov2021_5"

Our final item for this rather special So Kawaii box comes from the one and only Cardcaptor Sakura. A franchise that is very close to my own heart, so I am always delighted to see it being included in boxes from time to time. This item however is a tad lacking though, as it is simply two clear zip lock bags. This is a two piece set, which includes a small and medium sized document pocket as I would see it. Now the designs printed on them are adorable as heck, both featuring original images from the Clear Card anime. They can be used to hold your important papers whilst travelling, or maybe even your make up. End of the day, they are just resealable pouch pockets with cute images on the front and back.

And there we have it folks, that was the end of our November box review from SoKawaii. What did you think of this one? Let us know by reaching out to us across our social media accounts. So let’s continue with how you can get your very own SoKawaii box, as well as a small discount for all your first time buyers!

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. SoKawaii are back to shipping their boxes via Japan Post, so delivery may take a number of weeks. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 Month – $35.00 (€29.00mo roughly)

3 Months – $33.50 (€28.00mo roughly)

6 Months – $32.00 (€26.50mo roughly)

12 Months – $31.50 (€26.00mo roughly)

Better yet, here is a $3 discount code that you can use on your first box by clicking this link! http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you enjoyed November’s box, then just wait for Decembers’! It’s theme is “Kawaii Under The Christmas Tree”, which will feature a number of items from Rilakkuma, Sanrio and Pokémon. That box is already sold out and on the way to me and will include an Aggretsuko Christmas plushie amongst many other items. Stay tuned to SoKawaiis’ social media, as they announced their themes, sneak peaks and opinion polls on what fans want to see next in their boxes. They are very active on their Instagram and really listen to what their customers are looking for – so go have your say now! Also make sure and use that special discount code I left you all above!

We are well and truly getting into the festive spirit as a much anticipated Christmas season is just around the corner. After what has been a very much considered ‘write off’ of a year, I am getting into the holiday season this November and I already have the tree & decorations up this week. And what seems like an early Christmas present each month, my November SoKawaii box turned up just in time as I was finished decorating!

This months’ theme is “Kira Kira Night”, which roughly translates to Twinkle Twinkle Night. It has products from Pokémon, Sanrio and Kirby. Which range from a plush to stationary, a gift set, a Re-ment figure and an on-the-go cup.

So let’s get onto the important information shall we? SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (the Japanese word for cute). They create monthly subscription boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from brands such as Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio, Studio Ghibli and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 6 to 8 cute & useful items exclusive to Japan, pack them up in a very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently trending in Japanese arcades and stores. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. They also listen to what you would like to be included in future boxes, by asking across their social media. So make sure to have your opinions heard over on their social media posts. https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/ And at the moment, they are amongst one of the only subscription boxes that are still able to reach your door no matter what country you are in! *cough cough I now have 9 months of Nihon Box crates stuck in Japan due to Japan Post still not shipping to Ireland*

"sokawaiinovember2020_1"

Our first product and the largest, was a pastel rainbow coloured Sanrio plush. Of which I received the Hello Kitty version, but there was also a Pompompurin and Cinnamoroll up for grabs. All three appear as though they are snuggly knit into a pastel colored jumpsuit with hood. All of which remind me more of a pastel galaxy design instead of a rainbow inspired palette. They are well padded and stitched together, they come with a zip in the back like most of the plushies that seem to come in this box in the past. I honestly don’t understand the design appeal of having a tiny pocket in the back of a plush, that can only fit like a few coins. It also comes with a keychain on the top of the plush, so you can attach it to your bag, a hook, your bedpost or even on your clothing like the incredibly fashionable people that frequent Takeshita Street and Harajuku.

"sokawaiinovember2020_2"

"sokawaiinovember2020_3"

Our second item is a Pokémon Re-ment figure from the Starrium series. Just like the name suggests, this series focuses on stars which plays perfectly with this month's box theme. This Re-ment series has six designs to collect, which include Pikachu, Lapras, Jirachi, Gardevoir, Umbreon and Espeon. Unlucky for me I received the one design I least wanted, which was Pikachu. It’s still adorable and well made, and only came in two pieces that had to be assembled. Which is very nice, as some Re-ment figures like the Rilakkuma terrarium we received a few months back included too many loose figures. This series is well worth checking out and if you did receive one in your box - you can complete your collection by heading over to TokyoToys which have the full collection up for grabs. (https://www.tokyotoys.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=379&q=Pokemon+Starrium)

"sokawaiinovember2020_4"

"sokawaiinovember2020_5"

Our stationary item this box, comes from Kirby. As we get a notebook, which is available in two designs. This ruled and spiraled notebook, both feature Kirby on the forefront as well as an enclosed pocket design that is just filled with sparkling sequins to resemble a starry night sky. Each of the 70 pages inside are designed with Kirby featured along the bottom of each page. This is a high quality gift and one that I am more than pleased to add to my collection. What I will be using this notebook for in the future, I don’t quite know yet. With the design, it might just be ideal as a jotter to write down the crazy dreams I have after a night full of eating nothing but sweets!

"sokawaiinovember2020_6"

Our fourth item this month is an unusual one, as we receive a pack of My Melody laundry pegs. Although super cute and certainly practical. I have yet to test them out to see how strong they really are. You could also use them as a stationary item, if you wish to peg up some photos, drawings or notes on a string around your room. I have seen this done many times on Pinterest and maybe worth trying out, if you prefer having them more as decoration instead of having them exposed to the elements outside. They could also work as a bag clip, as suggested on the packaging. How useful they will be, will all depend on their grip.

"sokawaiinovember2020_7"

Next up, we have quite an interesting product. So from first glance, it appears to be a very small cup. Once you turn it over and look inside, you will see a raised design in the middle with ridges. This cup fits on top of any drink bottle you buy. So say I bought a 500ml bottle of Pepsi, I can attach my cup to the top of the bottle by firmly pushing it down. Then I can unscrew the cap, with the cup still on. That is what the ridges are for, to grip the screw top cap on the plastic drink bottle. Now the cup is incredibly tiny and I don’t see much use for it, except for little kids. So say you are going on a picnic (certainly not in this weather anyway) and your child isn’t skilled enough yet to hold a heavy drink bottle on their own. You can bring this cup for them and it should stay neatly on the bottle as you are travelling. This product is definitely intended for younger children and is much akin to what would be seen usually with a flask, when you are carrying copious amounts of tea or soup with you on the go. This Sanrio PET Bottle Cap Cup is available in two designs, featuring either Kuromi or Cinnamoroll - of which I got the lather. Although the Kuromi one is far better detailed compared to what I would describe as a rather plain Cinnamoroll version.

"sokawaiinovember2020_8"

And last but not least, we have a Cosme Gift Set. This very well presented piece, encloses a decorative hand towel and a small bottle of hand cream. The packaging is eye catching and this alone would be perfect to either use yourself or put away for someone special. It would also be a shame to even wrap this as a present, as it is stunning enough even on its own. This item is available in two designs, as either Hello Kitty or My Melody. Either or which will be printed on the hand towel and the hand cream bottle included.

"sokawaiinovember2020_9"

And there we have it folks, that was Novembers’ Kira Kira Night box from SoKawaii. Another jam backed box, filled not only with some practical items, but also a plush and even a decorative Re-ment figurine. The highlights for me this month, have to be the Kirby notebook and the Pokémon Re-ment figure, the Cosme gift set was also a very nice inclusion and is completely travel sized as I am constantly on the go. So if you want to know how to get your own subscription, then continue on reading! There’s even a discount code in there.

So here is the price breakdown of the box each month and the savings you can get. At the moment, SoKawaii are shipping their boxes via DHL as Japan Post is still not allowing worldwide postage from Japan. Whether you subscribe month to month, or for their 3, 6 or even 12 month package options – there are savings to be had.

1 MONTH – $35.00/€31.77mo

3 MONTHS – $33.50/€30.40mo

6 MONTHS – $32.00/€29.04mo

12 MONTHS – $31.50/€28.59mo

Better yet, here is a 10% discount code that you can use on your first box!

http://sokawaii.refr.cc/maryhealy

Now if you liked everything you saw in this review of November’s box, rest assured that the items are different every month, for the most part. Each box has 6 to 8 items included and a few of them will be revealed online through SoKawaiis’ social media as the weeks go by. December’s box theme is “Kawaii Christmas Party”, which will feature goods from Animal Crossing, Sanrio and Kirby, with a few of the products included already announced across their social media. And this box will mark the last one to be released for 2020!

November’s theme was “Childhood Memories” and centered around some iconic franchises that popped up during my own childhood, from Pokémon to Kirby and Hamtaro. So let’s get the usual bit of information out of the way shall we.

For those of you that are just jumping into this article, this is now my 7th consecutive month that I have gotten this box. SoKawaii is a company based in Japan, home of practically everything kawaii (Japanese for cute). They create monthly boxes, jam packed with 100% licensed products from Hello Kitty, Pokémon, Sanrio and more. The items range from plushies to Gachapon, little figures, stationary, lifestyle, kitchenware and more. The staff at SoKawaii handpicks 6 to 8 cute & useful items exclusive in Japan, pack them up in this very decorative box and send it straight to your doorstep. You can also check out their Instagram for even more info and insights into what is currently appearing in Japanese arcades. As well as sneak peeks into what they could be including in next month’s box. https://www.instagram.com/sokawaii/

"sokawaiinov1"

So November is centered around “Childhood Memories” and for me Pokémon was a huge part of mine. Even today I tend to keep up to date on the latest Pokémon news, although I have fallen far behind on playing the games. Whereas Hamtaro I only knew from reading girls magazines growing up and seeing it plastered on tote bags and notebooks. I didn’t even know it was a Japanese character. In this box, we also have products from Rilakkuma, Sanrio and Sumikko Gurashi, that we get in the form of plushies, stationary and a cute key lock.

The largest item we receive this month is a macaron shaped plush pillow from Sumikko Gurashi, that you could get in 3 different designs. Sumikko Gurashi is a set of characters created by San - X, the same company behind Rillakkuma. The characters involved in Sumikko Gurashi are an interesting bunch, that include an anxious cat, a polar bear that dislikes the cold, a penguin that has an identity crisis, a leftover pork fillet (Tonkatsu) that has its own consciousness and a dinosaur that pretends to be a lizard. As to what the other two pillow designs were, I’m not sure but it looks like I got Neko the anxious cat. It’s super soft but not all that well padded, great for throwing around for decor but perhaps not the best in terms of comfort.

From the same San - X company, we actually get quite a useful Rilakkuma key lock. Perfect for those of you that are still in school and have lockers, it can also be used to lock those diaries you which to keep quiet about and maybe even your gym locker. It’s certainly very cute, but I’m unsure how sturdy a lock like this could be. Either way, it still makes for a very eye catching keychain.

"sokawaiinov2"

Sanrio are back again this month, but this time in the form of some stationary. This time we get an eraser in the shape of a lipstick - yes I had to double check that once I got it as I was fully convinced it may have been lip gloss before opening it. This lipstick shaped eraser comes in a few designs that feature some of Sanrios’ famous characters - I for one was very happy to receive Pompompurin. As well as this very useful item to add to my stationery collection, it also comes with it’s own special scent. Mine reminds me of custard or even flan.

Then we have a mascot plush of Hamtaro! The little hamster TV series that was popular back in the early noughties, that followed an adventurous young hamster named Hartaro and his fellow hamster friends the Ham-Hams. This plush is just perfection! The perfect size for a character such as Hamtaro, very well made and is perhaps the first bit of merch I have seen from Hamtaro this side of the World in about 15 years. It’s clear to see that this character is still going strong back in Japan if this new plush is being released. There are also 8 character designs available, so which one will you get in your box? And it looks like I got either Stan or Sandy.

"sokawaiinov3"

You can never go wrong with including either Kirby or Pokémon in your boxes each month. This time we got this adorable and really good quality coin purse with a cute Pikachu on the front. Aimed more at women who have known up with Pokémon and are still in love with the franchise. The perfect size to keep in your handbag and even comes with an attached clip so you can clip it on to something in your handbag so you know where it is at all times. I will definitely be using this when I go over to Japan and play in the arcades.

Our last two items are Kirby related, with yet another piece of stationary included in this box with a small notepad. It fits in the palm of your hand and looks incredibly cute when you pair it with last months’ Kirby themed pen. The notepad has colored pages with two different Kirby designs used throughout. It will certainly make note taking even more enjoyable on a daily basis, and is available in two designs.

And lastly we have this charming Kirby themed dessert spoon, which is only available exclusively in Japan and now my cutlery drawer! It also seems wrong to use it, for one - it is quite a big spoon! Perfect if you plan on eating a tub of ice cream in just a matter of a few spoonfuls, but it also looks like a piece of art that should only be admired and not touched. I’m torn as to either figure out how to display it or simply give in and go grab a tub of mint choc-chip out of the freezer. Why not leave your suggestions below, as I would love to hear your ideas. This spoon is available in four designs, so which one did you get in your box?

That was certainly an interesting box and it included some great nostalgic characters like Hamtaro. However seeing as the theme was “Childhood Memories”, I don’t really understand why they included Sumikko Gurashi as they only came out around 2012, whereas Rillakumma first appeared in 2003. It makes me wonder what the general age bracket is of the customers that buy the SoKawaii boxes? I myself am 28 and I would think that this was more aimed at women in their early to mid twenties. Either way, I won’t be stopping this subscription anytime soon!

"sokawaiinov4"

And there you have it folks, that was Novembers’ So Kawaii box. What has been your favourite item included and have you signed up yet for your very own box? If not, here are all the details you need to know.

Here is the price break down of the box each month and the savings you can get, weather you subscribe month to month, or for 3, 6 or even 12 months.
