Following a deadly accident on a building site, Kaneki is rushed into surgery where the only hope of saving his life is to replace his failing organs with that of the Ghoul who was about to kill him. Thus Kaneki’s life begins to change forever, as his body and appetite dramatically evolve into that of a ghoul. He later develops a reputation as the ‘One Eyed Ghoul’, as he battles not only against a society that hunts his kind, but also his own mental demons. With little to no ties left in the ‘human’ world, Kaneki trains and fights to defend his new ghoul allies. The franchise is a continuous journey of Kaneki’s life over the course of just a number of years, as his view on the World shifts a number of times. We follow his footsteps as he not only takes on an unjust society filled with hatred for the Ghouls, the CCG that hunt them, the underground societies that support ghoul attacks but also the individual ghouls who let their hunger overtake their sanity.

Within Season One of Tokyo Ghoul, we meet what was once a shy college student on the day of his first date. Our poor Kaneki was soon almost left for dead and upon Doctors saving his life, they practically ended any hope of him living as a simple human being ever again. Following his organ transplants, Kaneki is ‘reborn’ into a Ghoul. He quickly realises the situation he is now in and uses his will power to the best of his ability to put up with his hunger. As the story begins to come full circle, Kaneki is introduced to the manager of Anteiku - an undercover Ghoul café that also monitors and helps the local ghouls in the area. There are many hardships in this first season, as we see many beloved characters meet their end. As well as watching Kaneki being both mentally and physically abused, all of which drastically changed him once again.

"tokyoghoul_root"

Season Two - Tokyo Ghoul √A follows Kaneki as he leaves Anteiku behind and goes down a different path in order to get stronger. Without ruining the plot of this season, Kaneki’s journey does not get any easier. We do learn more about the other Ghoul factions, more information on the ‘One Eyed Owl’, developments in the CCG and their plans to wipe out all Ghouls one by one. This season was full of action, but the final scenes in that episode were dragged out far too much in my opinion. Also prepare to follow the numerous bad dye jobs Kanekis’ hair goes through in such a short amount of time.

"tokyoghoul_Part1"

Moving on, we have Season Three called Tokyo Ghoul:re. Now this season takes place two years after the final moments of the previous season. The CCG have developed a new section named the Quinx Squad. Formed of a group of highly trained investigators that have been made into one eyed ghouls, established to better attack and defeat ghouls on the field. This particular group is led by a very familiar face now known as Haise Sasaki. This season explores this mans’ identity, past and his decision to change the World around him. More details and secrets are exposed from the inner workings of the CCG. We see the return of many familiar faces, old factions reforming and causing havoc, the ‘Gourmet’ ghoul searching for his beloved Kaneki and the face of Tokyo undergoing a new facelift. An overall satisfying ending to the anime series and still a show I would love to check out the manga it is based on.

"tokyoghoul_ova"

The two OVA are JACK and PINTO. Both of which are prequel stories to the series, but can perhaps be better enjoyed once you have watched all three seasons. It is only these two episodes that can only be watched in sub, as there was no English Dub released for these. Anime Limited certainly explained these two plots better than I could:

In "Jack", see the early days of Kisho Arima's life as both a high school student and one of the youngest CCG investigators. See him team up with a high school delinquent by the name of Taishi Fura to hunt down a brutal ghoul known as Lantern.

Meanwhile in "Pinto'' discover more about fan favourite Shu Tsukiyama, aka the Gourmet, as he meets Chie Hori for the first-time. Find out how the avid photographer captures Tsukiyama on camera for the first time and how their friendship begins to blossom from there.

So let’s dive into the origins of Tokyo Ghoul. This supernatural thriller manga was created by Sui Ishida and was published in Weekly Young Jump back in 2011. Within its first three years it had already released 14 volumes and concluded the initial part of the manga series. It then began a new chapter under the name Tokyo Ghoul: re just a month after ending the original title. That series carried on for another 4 years and ended with a grand 16 volumes. All of which is available in print and digital from Viz Media over here in the West, and can of course be read in its entirety on the Viz Media app. Which is well worth that €1.99 monthly subscription fee.

The franchise has also had a number of light novel adaptations, the three very successful anime seasons and OVAs, as well as two live action adaptation films and five video games. All of the anime was developed by Japanese animation studio: Pierrot. A long established company that is now four decades in the business. They have animated many memorable and classic franchises including Naruto, Bleach, Black Clover and The Mysterious Cities of Gold.

Tokyo Ghoul certainly has it’s darker elements to the show, including murder, mutilation, cannabilism and physcal torture. Its not for the faint hearted or the very young for obvious reasons. But is certainly a show well worth watching for those that can stomach it. You can watch it in all its glory by buying the physical editions from Anime Limited. In a World where Gods & Goddesses once descended upon the Earth in order to walk amongst their subjects and seek some entertainment, Dungeons were created for their followers to explore and defeat the evil monsters within its labyrinth like levels. Each God created their own clan known as a Familia. Some were more successful than others. The Goddess Hestia was amongst the lower class, whose familia only consisted of just one other member. A 14 year old young adventurer by the name of Bell Cranel. Having been bestowed with Hestia’s blessing, Bell begins his long journey to becoming a well skilled adventurer and making the Hestia Familia infamous.

Despite the long winded and somewhat off-putting title, this show was actually quite entertaining. We follow the young Bell Cranel, who has journeyed towards the city of Orario to become an adventurer just like his late grandfather had hoped for him. Having failed to join any of the established Familia within the city, he is eventually found and welcomed into Hestia’s following. Unlike many of the other Deities we come across in the show, Hestia also helps support their lifestyle by working any job she finds whilst Bell is training in the dungeons. After an encounter with a renowned adventurer, Bell develops a new skill that allows him to level up a lot faster than what would normally be possible. To which Hestia refuses to tell him about, due to come conflicting emotions regarding the origins of this ability. Throughout both seasons, we watch as Bell comes against many challenges and dangerous battles, including a minotaur attack that would have surely killed him. He later gains allies and begins to build an adventuring party, as well as gaining some new friends along the way from other familia and occupations. We learn more about the Gods and the fractions between them. Some stretching back so far in time, before the Gods even set foot upon the Earth. There is far more to this show, than simply ‘picking up girls.

"isitwrongtotrytopickupgirlsinadungeon-season-2"

Bell Cranel is our main character in the show, he begins as a solo adventurer with little to no skill. He certainly stands out in the crowd when it comes to his appearance, as he has white hair and red eyes. Almost inhuman in some regards, but certainly is a 14 year old boy at heart. Following an encounter with the powerful swordswoman Ais Wallenstein, Bell develops a crush on the beautiful woman and vows to train as hard as he can in order to get to her level of skill. Thankfully the romance is one sided for now, as the story instead revolves around his journey to level up and improve the living conditions of his Familia. Hestia is perhaps one of the more head-strong Goddesses in this show, short in stature but will take any opportunity to prove her worth in a fight. Her attire is….questionable, as it holds absolutely zero practicality. I mean, what is the point of having a string/ribbon tied across your upper arms and restricting your movements? I just don’t get it!

There are a number of other characters that appear in the show that certainly add to the fun. From those within the other Familia, who are friends and foes alike, to Eina Tulle who is Bell’s contact at the Guild, and even the waitresses Syr and Ryú that work in a local pub. All of which have certainly added some excitement to the show. With Season One more focussed on Bell developing his skills and doing his best to survive the upper levels of a dungeon. Season Two has even more action, as a war between both Hestia and Apollo’s familias begins. With the Champion familia choosing what fate the losing faction will suffer, as well as claiming their entire wealth. Not only that, Bell gets involved in trying to uncover and save a Renart he encounters in the ‘Red Light District’.

You read that right folks, Bell takes a stroll through Otario’s version of the ‘red light district’. The home to many a courtesan and escort, if Hestia found out she would be furious! Where Season One developed not only Bell’s skills, but also established the World and many of the recurring characters. Season Two went straight for the action, with not only a rescue attempt of a captive fox-tailed prostitute, but also a war between Gods that resulted in a deadly game of ‘Storming the castle’. This franchise is full of action, and it doesn't end just there with Season Two!

‘Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?’ first began as a light novel series back in 2013 by Fujino Ómori. It has since been picked up and translated by Yen Press, and is still on-going with 16 volumes out at present. Several months later, the manga adaptation was released from the same author. Which was also picked up by Yen Press and now stands at 11 volumes and once again, is still on-going. With just two short years after the series hit print, an anime adaptation was released. All of which was animated by J.C. Staff, the studio responsible for Food Wars, A Certain Magical Index and One Punch Man Season 2. The anime has since had 3 seasons and a number of OVA’s. However it was Animatsu Entertainment that released Season One over here in the West, with MVM Entertainment picking up and releasing Season Two.

Season Three only just aired last year, so we should hear at some point this year who will be releasing that title. Fingers crossed for another MVM Entertainment release. If all that isn’t enough for you, there is also a film called, ‘Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?: Arrow of the Orion’ that was released by Manga UK. As well as the spin off series, ‘Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? On The Side: Sword Oratoria' was released by MVM Entertainment a number of years back.

This is a show well worth checking out if you enjoy your adventuring, dungeon battle animes. All the fantasy adventure, just minus the isekai. And there is plenty to enjoy from this franchise, and I highly doubt it ends with Season 3!

During an event known as “Lost Christmas”, a biological disaster struck the entirety of Tokyo. Known as the “Apocalypse Virus”, those that were infected suffered from an incurable disease that ultimately destroyed them. Japan sought assistance and aid from abroad, which led to the United Nations dispatching an organisation known as the GHQ.

Ten years have gone by and the GHQ is still controlling Tokyo. A group or resistance fighters known as Funeral Parlor wage a campaign against GHQ, in order to liberate Japan once again. One of their members is the popular vocalist Inroi Yuzuriha and through her connection a young high school student Shu Ouma is pulled into the fight for liberation. This series is filled with action, battle tactics, rescuing each other and survival.

So this is kind of an older anime that I came across whilst scrolling through Netflix one evening. Originally came out in 2011 from Production I.G Division 6, best known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Eden of the East and Psycho-Pass. It was an original anime production, but following it’s initial anime release it later had a number of manga and a novel adaptations. It was later picked up for physical release by Manga Entertainment UK and was released in two parts back in 2013, however their physical releases have become very difficult to find brand new nowadays. Which is grand, as the entire show is available to stream over on Netflix which is where I watched it.

Now at times during the show, it was a bit hit and miss. Feeling as though it was almost a chore to watch it around the mid way point. The plot was decent, characters were good, their personalities at times - kinda meh! The show could have ended at 12 episodes for me and I would have been happy, however they stretched it out until episode 22. The battles were exciting, the second half of the show went in a direction I wasn’t expecting. There were a number of sad moments, of which the ending was a tad bittersweet. Which is kind of similar to another show I am watching at the moment, a certain season of SAO.

If you enjoy your dystopian animes, then Guilty Crown is worth watching. Not only have you got just groups of teenagers acting like soldiers, fighting for their country's liberation. But you also have political thrillers as well, with the actions taken by Funeral Parlor and even Shu, determining just how an entire population's futures will unfold. We have ‘magical’ weapons known as ‘voids’, that can be drawn from an entire demographic of people, by just one guy - Shu Ouma. Not its never just by chance in anime, that the main character just ends up being ‘gifted’ a powerful ability such as this. Shu has a rather interesting past, family members and even a direct connection to the origins of “Lost Christmas”. All of which is fairly well explored in this show.

You can catch Guilty Crown right now over on Netflix, but best of luck finding the physical releases online!

Overall: 7.5/10

‘One Cut of the Dead’ is back once again, with a sequel that takes place just six months after the films ‘live recording’. The Higurashi family return with Mao, their over enthusiastic daughter stepping up to the directors chair when her father takes an unexpected trip in a removal van as he takes a night's rest in some unusual bedding. They gather up the original cast and crew, with the addition of some foreign talent, as they set their sights on filming their new production in Hollywood.

With the starlet Chinatsu returning in the leading role, who travels to America, changes her hair, starts working in a restaurant and goes by the name Holly. All the while escaping her past and the horrors she witnessed in the first film.

Now I have to say, I absolutely loved the format of the first film and was thrilled to see a sequel. Seeing as we already had a fairly good introduction to the cast in the first film, you really do need to watch that before diving into the Hollywood edition. In which its their daughter Mao, who takes the reins when things really go to shit just hours before they go live on the air. Not only does she deal with the stress, chaos and even a massive incident with the leading star all on the fly - she also deals with working through a fairly big issue with her foriegn boyfriend, who also ends up playing one of the leads on ‘her’ film.

"onecutofthedead_he1"

So with the returning cast of various characters, we still have a good entertaining mix of personalities for this sequel. Within the film they also still have the very awkward task of working with starlet Chinatsu, who seems to love making the film's crew work around her ‘demands’. Some of which require quite a change in the script, much to Mao’s anger. Then we have Mao becoming both the saviour and real star of this film, as her father the director disappears. This girl manages to overcome all the obstacles that a live shooting brings, as well as dealing with a heartbreaking situation with her other half. Then we have the two ‘foreign’ talents in the film, who definitely add to the overall enjoyment of the film.

So as an overall look back on the film, I have to say the first twenty minutes was hard to watch. It was so incredibly cheesy and with terrible acting, that it felt as though it was trying to make fun of itself. However those twenty minutes was the entirety of the film they were shooting live, so we saw their ‘finished product’ first before we actually got to the plot. So the film within the film, was pretty bad, but the film as a whole - t’was decent. I wouldn’t be rushing to go back and rewatch it anytime soon. As it hasn’t surpassed the original, but at the same time it was good to just see it again and see how the characters had progressed. As Mao’s character development was practically the whole point of this film, also it was so good seeing how they shot the film ‘live’ and how it all works from behind the scenes again. It certainly was a passion project. Even though this is a ‘zombie’ film, it was ‘John’s character acting that kind of eclipsed it all. I mean, the moment he was stalling in the scene outside with the zombies - he just went pure Scarface.

If you haven’t bought the first film already, then I would highly suggest this version. You also need to act quick, as it is limited to just 2000 copies. Based on the fact that this includes the original film, my score is going to be higher than what it would be based on just this sequel.

I’m sure to many this franchise needs no introduction, as for some of you it may have been your first anime. As it became a massive hit when it began back in 2012 and has since been known to divide the anime community back in the past. We are coming up to the shows 10th anniversary next year and after seeing clips of the new season: Alicization Underworld, I decided to go back to the very beginning of the show and catch up.

It’s the year 2022, virtual reality gaming and its technology has come a long way. Now players can ‘fully dive’ into an online multiplayer role playing game by using a NerveGear, that allows the user to experience and control their online characters with just their minds, whilst in reality they are just lying down in their bed with a gaming helmet on. Both the NerveGear and the latest VRMMORPG game Sword Art Online, were created by Akihiko Kayaba. Who welcomes all the new players when they enter the game - only to trap them all inside on Launch Day as he removes everyones ‘logout’ button. Now 10,000 players of all ages are trapped within the online game, with no way to disconnect - except to beat the game by defeating the Boss on the 100th floor.

We follow a young man named Kirito, as he does his best to survive in the game as a solo player. Along the way he often joins up with other players and even joins a Guild, in order to progress even further towards the Boss floor. Two years pass both within the game and the Real World, many have given up all hope of ever leaving Aincrad and have begun businesses, bought homes and as for Kirito - meeting a fellow SAO player named Asuna and having a family together by more or less adopting a wandering child that they found in the forest. This couple keeps pushing forward at all times for the sake of all the players still trapped in the game and in memory of those that have died along the way. The first Season of Sword Art Online had heart ache, a thirst for survival, seeing people reach their limits, the dark side of humanity but also the many girls that have all fallen head of heels for Kirito. With only one of them getting that all important ring on their finger. Now this show may not have been for everyone, as there were a number of dark themes involved, including PKs (Player Killers) within the game that were murderers. We also had immense violence, torture, some shocking and intense scenes at times, especially towards Asuna towards the end of the first season. It came close to hitting the 18 age rating at times.

"swordartonline2"

Season Two is set a year after the events in Aincrad but just a short time after where we left off in Alfheim Online, as both Kirito and Asuna begin to readjust to reality and attend school again. We have since been introduced to Kirito’s cousin Suguha, who joins the gang as they continue to explore ALO. This season follows Kirito as he ports his avatar over to another game called Gun Gale Online, at the behest of a Government Official after reports of several real life murders linked to the game and a player going by the name Death Gun. Here we meet a player named Sinon, who assists a very feminine looking Kirito as he gets his barings in the new game. Sinon has an interesting backstory and is using her character in GGO to help tackle her childhood trauma. Once again by the end of this season, another girl has fallen for Kirito. With Asuna still the only one in Kirito's sights, the rest of the girls still manage to follow him wherever he goes. This season also see’s Kirito playing a significant role in how a Government taskforce tries to bridge the gap between crimes committed between the real and virtual worlds.

"swordartonline2_3"

In the second half of Season Two, we return to the adventures found in ALO. As Kirito and his friends set out on a quest to discover the legendary Holy Sword Excalibur. Once that side mission is complete, its Asuna’s turn to shine as after her duel with an undefeated player, she is asked to join a party with a guild known as the Sleeping Knights, in order to complete a mission. There we meet the undefeated swords-woman Yuuki, known across ALO for her 11 hit original sword skill “Mother’s Rosario”. This was a heartbreaking arc to watch, as Yuuki’s story was tragic. Asuna, having ultimately discovered her secret, rushes to her side and does all she can to comfort her. Once again it is both Kirito and his ideas of limiting the gap between the real and the virtual worlds, that allows Yuuki the chance to experience a normal school day yet again. Something she had been unable to do for so very long. Although the end of this season left me in tears, it was beautifully done and left such an impact on all the characters involved that continued to be shown again in the coming seasons.

"swoardartonline_movie"

Following on from Season Two, the “Ordinal Scale” movie was released. Having bridged the gap once more between the real and virtual worlds, a new headset and VR game was released. Similar to when Pokémon Go was first released, you had to travel around to both catch Pokémon, defeat gyms, participate in raids and hatch eggs. This film brought the VR world into the real world, you could ‘dive’ out in the open on the street during live events. With Boss raids a common event, they were organised in a way that wherever it was taking part, areas of the city would be cordoned off for the event for safety precautions. It was a community event, instead of solo gaming. You would imagine that Kirito would love this kind of game, but in fact it was the opposite, as it didn't feel the same as a ‘fulldive’. It relied more on your physical ability, as it was just you as you are doing all the movement. Too much physical effort for Kirito it seems. Ultimately there was something sinister going on behind the games development, as several players' memories became affected - including Asuna’s. As Kirito begins investigating more into the games developers, he uncovers that there is a link between this new VR game and the developer of SAO: Akihiko Kayaba.

"swordartonline_a"

Season Three takes on the Alicization arc. Where a member of ‘Laughing Coffin’ ends upattacking both Kirito and Asuna one night out on the street. As Kirito manages to push Asuna out of harm's way, he ends up being injected with the same poison that was being used to carry out the murders he was investigating in GGO. Now clinging onto life and with severe brain damage, it’s none other than Investigator Kikuoka that brings forth the idea that Kirito gets transferred to a military hospital in order to get specialized medical attention. By using the same full dive tech that was used by Yuuki in ALO, Kirito awakens in the same world he onced visited as part of his part time work at Rath. However he still retains his memories, all except the moment he was attacked by Laughing Coffin and the memories he once held in this World. Now Kirito must figure out how this ‘game’ works, what he can do and how he can get out again.

In this series we meet Eugeo and Alice, both of which were born in the same village and grew up together. In this world there are rules and laws, if they are broken by an individual, they are taken away by an Integrity Knight to be punished. This is what happened to the young girl Alice, now Eugeo wishes to go and rescue her. However first he has to complete his Sacred Task, which of course Kirito teaches him a short cut in how to do this.

This season is unlike anything that happened in the franchise previously. Although Kirito is now ‘trapped’ in a new world, it’s not a game. This is an AI building environment, these ‘people’ are living out their entire lives, generation after generation right here. All experiencing life just like people in the real World. It’s almost like The Truman Show, a world set up so that individuals will believe its real and will live their lives out as normal. And of course this is all being done with an ulterior motive, not for the world of gaming but as a technological advancement for warfare by creating a ‘bottom-up’ AI. One that was created not by inputting all the data, but by learning it itself and establishing its own morals and values. So although Kirito is recovering within the ‘full-dive’, as his neural brain paths are being restored, he is also trying to help rescue the captured Alice within. There is quite a bit going on in this show, although very little time has passed between all these events in Asuna's world - perhaps a week or two at best. For Kirito, it has been over two years and a lot has happened in that time!

"swordartonline_a2"

Part Two of this Season has only finished airing in recent months and has yet to receive an English Dub. So the physical release will be some time for Alicization: War of Underworld. However you can still watch the English sub version now over on Crunchyroll if you just can’t wait! For me, this arc of the franchise has been the strongest yet and needed the previous seasons to get the characters and storyline to this point where this arc would be possible. Ultimately it is Kirito that has suffered the most in this season, I can’t say much as there are far too many spoilers involved. It’s such a strong season and I have no idea where it will go next, but there is hope for another season. We know already that there is a movie in the works named Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night, which brings us all the way back to Season One in Aincrad from Asuna’s perspective as she encounters Kirito and we see her initial struggles trying to cope with her new reality trapped within a game.

For now feel free to buy your physical copies of the anime franchise today. If you prefer streaming, then Seasons 1, 2 and the first half of Season 3, as well as Ordinal Scale are available to watch now in English Dub over on Netflix. The full franchise is also available to watch in full over on Crunchyroll.

A Tale of Two Sisters is still considered the highest grossing Korean horror film of all time, and rightly so. This film keeps the audience guessing until the very end, when all is revealed and you are left reeling in shock during the closing credits - I certainly was at least. Although at times the plot did appear confusing, I encourage you to watch to the very end for that jaw-dropping reveal.

A family road trip suddenly comes to a halt, for a recent widowed Ben (Charles Bateman) with his newly girlfriend Nicky (Ahna Capri) and Ben’s young daughter K.T (Geri Reischl), when they come across a car accident on the highway. After witnessing the car accident, the family heads to the isolated town of Hillsboro to report it to the local sheriff (L.Q. Jones). After trying to report the incident, the family is met with violent locals and with the failure of trying to leave this crazy town, they’re warned by the sheriff (L.Q. Jones)., deputy Tobey (Alvy Moore), the local physician Doc Duncan (Strother Martin) and the local priest (Charles Robinson), of the strange occurrences, that has left the locals paranoid in fear, due to several gruesome murders and the mysterious disappearance of eleven local children gone missing. This soon becomes reality for Ben and Nicky, when Ben’s daughter K.T suddenly goes missing and is believed through the local priest, that a dangerous satanic cult of Satan worshippers are behind it all.

‘’The Brotherhood of Satan’’ (1971) is an American low budget horror movie, that surrounds a family consisting of Ben (Charles Bateman), who’s wife died years prior is now on a road trip with his newly girlfriend Nicky (Ahna Capri) and Ben’s young daughter K.T(Geri Reischl), who are on their way to visit K.T’s grandmother’s house to celebrate K.T’s birthday, which unfortunately for them soon comes to a halt, when they come across a brutal car accident on the highway, leading them to go to the small town of Hillsboro to report the accident they came across to the local sheriff. This film starts with a bizarre opening that may cause confusion to audiences on what is going on, as before we are introduced to our main protagonists Ben and his family, the film shows what had happened that had lead to the car accident Ben and his family had witnessed the aftermaths of, in which the opening of the film shows a continuing theme within this movie, which is children’s toys coming to life and killing those within the town, as a toy tank is shown being brought to life and destroying a car with a family inside, which continues to be even more creepy, as a child is seen walking away from the crash with the toy tank in his hand, indicating something sinister is happening, Ben and his family soon experience the strange occurrences themselves, when they try to leave but are forced to stay, due to a mystical force, that is not letting them or any of the locals leave the town. While the local sheriff (L.Q. Jones).and some of the other locals try to come up with a logical explanation for not being able to leave or the reasoning behind all the gruesome murders and missing children within the town, they all laugh at the local priest (Charles Robinson), who suggests their dealing with witchcraft, but they’re soon proven along with Ben and Nicky, that the priest maybe onto something, when K.T (Geri Reischl), becomes the next child to suddenly go missing and more dead bodies start piling up.

"brotherhoodofsatan1"

The film introduces our main protagonists Ben (Charles Bateman) and his newly girlfriend Nicky (Ahna Capri), as a loving couple, due to them holding each other’s gazes throughout and their first scene within the film is them passionately having a private moment, before they’re interrupted by Ben’s daughter K.T (Geri Reischl and a sudden pouring down of lashing rain. Ben’s newly girlfriend Nicky (Ahna Capri) is portrayed from the very start to have been treating Ben’s daughter K.T (Geri Reischl) as if she was her own, as despite K.T not being hers by blood, Nicky is shown being affectionate towards her and K.T seems to reciprocate the same affection, showing there is trust between them, as Nicky’s character isn’t portrayed as a cruel step mother but a doting one instead. The locals within the town of Hillsboro are firstly introduced as crazy town’s people, as they turned dangerously violent the minute Ben and his family showed up, as due to all the strange occurrences and the mystery behind no one being able to come in or out of the town, has caused the locals to become paranoid, as they became suspicious of Ben and his family, as they were the first outside people to get into the town. The character of the local sheriff (L.Q. Jones) is shown in most of his scenes to be smoking, which indicates he might be using it as a copying mechanism, as character traits like this has made his character stand out, as he shows more emotion and presence on screen than our lead protagonist, as he has moments where he loses it, due to the stress of how he can’t solve the mystery, which is even more frustrating for him, as his niece is one of the missing children and even though he is sceptical at first, he does step up, when he finally comes to terms and believes the priest (Charles Robinson), that there is something satanic at play. The character that stood out the most was the cult leader (Strother Martin), due to his performance being quite eccentric, as he embodied the craziness and evilness of a satanic worshipper with the pride and egotistic mind of a leader, who wants those to bow down to him and kiss his hand.

This ambitious low budget horror film was a truly entertaining watch, with its unique visual ideas that were quite well executed while others were not. This film had one of the most strange openings, that involved a toy tank destroying a car with a family inside, with the film showing the back and forth of seeing a toy tank to the tank becoming life size and with no context on why or how this is happening, it will keep audiences intrigued to see how this ties into the overall plot. Along with the toy tank, the film also has other toys come to life, that were visually quite well executed, such as the film showing the contrast between a toy of a knight on a horse reflecting in the shadow on the wall behind it to seeing the same knight on a horse brought to life and having their shadow reflect the image of the killing of its victim. One of the killings that wasn’t executed visually as well as some of the others, was where a creepy doll is about to murder a couple but the scene comes off more laughable that creepy, as it looks as though someone was just shaking the doll in front of the camera and edited to look as though it had killed their victim. The most visually striking scenes were those with the satanic cult, as due to the creepy imagery that is shown describing horrific events and the red lighting that helps set up a more gothic feel, it causes those scenes to stand out, as it visually looks as though it’s not in the same contemporary setting, as the rest of the movie with our main protagonists. The character of the cult leader (Strother Martin) stood out from the rest of the cast, as the actor Strother Martin, who is mainly known as a character actor, looked as though he had the most fun with his role, as he had brought much needed life into the film. Other than the character of the cult leader (Strother Martin) giving a more of a memorable performance, there is a sense of disconnect for our other characters such as our main protagonists Ben (Charles Bateman) and Nicky (Ahna Capri), as they don’t really get much to do, other than having a sweet family dynamic and it’s the same with the characters of the sheriff (L.Q. Jones) and the local priest (Charles Robinson), as it felt as though they were all doomed from the start.

"brotherhoodofsatan2.jpg"

I highly recommend watching ‘The Brotherhood of Satan’ (1971), as I guarantee you will be surprised by how quite ambitious the film tries to be, as despite it being low budget, the filmmakers tried to make something unique, which is evident especially in it’s opening scene and even though the film doesn’t always perfectly execute all their visual ideas, it will leave audiences with chills from the film’s fiery satanic bloody ceremony to the eyes of those staring back in its dark unsettling end.

‘The Brotherhood of Satan’ (1971) is a mix between the horror film ‘Children of the Corn’ meets ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ , as the children in this film are used as pawns by something satanic and the film also indicates towards a sickening reason behind those involved in the satanic cult. ‘The Brotherhood of Satan’ (1971) is directed by Bernard McEveety, who famously directed Jodie Foster’s first film Disney’s ‘Napoleon and Samantha’ in 1972.

Special thanks to Vertigo Releasing, who has announced that ‘The Brotherhood of Satan’ (1971) will be available on Blu ray with a broad range of special features including new audio commentary and much more, to be released on the 30th of August 2021.

So this release is actually a combination of the first film and the Hollywood edition, with a bunch of bonus material.
