A group of 9 year old school friends begin a game of Tag in 1983.. flash forward to present day, and the game is still running. Every year, for the month of May, the five friends are fair game. This year, Hogan (Ed Helms) meets up with Chilli (Jake Johnson), Callaghan (John Hamm) and Sable (Hannibal Buress) and tells them that Jerry (Jeremy Renner) is thinking about retiring from the game. This annoys everyone, basically because in 30 years, Jerry has never been tagged. They decide to travel back to their home town of Spokane, Washington and track Jerry down. Jerry is due to get married, but in the boys’ minds, this will not stop the game. The other four are determined that this is the year of Jerry’s downfall. They decide they will go to any lengths to catch Jerry and finally tag him…
The movie is based on the true story of a group of guys that started playing a game of tag in 1990 and it continues to this day. The actual number of players in real life is 10, and the game started when they were all in Preparatory school in Spokane. They became known as the ‘Tag Brothers’.
I really wasn’t sure how much of a movie you could make from a game of Tag, but was pleasantly surprised by the story. I’m a big fan of Ed Helm’s work and so looked forward to seeing it. A really great cast and a story based on actual events, make this one to watch. It’s great to just be able to go to the cinema and leave your worries at the door and not to have to think about anything whilst watching a film. ‘Tag’ is one such movie, and there is guaranteed laughs throughout the movie, mostly due to the injuries the guys get while trying to tag each other.
If you’re looking for a nice simple comedy to go to with a group of your mates, then go see ‘Tag’.
