MunkyFun, a San Francisco-based independent game developer, confirmed the November 7th launch date for League of War: VR Arena, a new arena-based arcade war game based on its highly successful League of War strategy game franchise, on PlayStation VR. In the action-oriented strategy game, players will fight quick, visceral battles against AI opponents in single-player mode or a human opponent in two-player mode. The game’s head-to-head mode has a unique twist: the VR player will engage in strategic combat against a non-VR opponent playing on the Social Screen in the same room for a combination of classic local multiplayer and modern VR.
In League of War: VR Arena, players will attempt to lead their side to victory by virtually placing and aiming units on a tabletop-style arena battlefield. The goal is to destroy the opposing army’s towers and base. Each of the Commanders in the game earns units for their squad as they progress through their individual story mode. A squad is comprised of Infantry, Tanks, Recon, Choppers and Artillery, each of which occupies one of five spawn pads. These spawn pads generate units if they are part of your squad. Each unit requires time and energy to build, with more powerful units requiring more energy and taking longer to charge up. Players will directly place and aim their units at the opponent as if they were a giant-sized general overseeing a virtual battlefield. The winner is the first player to destroy the opposing base.
“League of War: VR Arena will turn your living room into an intense virtual battlefield that combines the immersion of VR with the immediacy of head-to-head competition,” said Nick Pavis, CEO and Co-founder of MunkyFun, Inc. “With one player on the headset and the other playing via the TV screen, it’s a throwback to classic strategy combat where you can’t hide behind a screenname—win or lose, your opponent will be right next to you!”
The game features both a single player Campaign mode and an Arcade mode where players face off head-to-head using the PS VR headset and the Social Screen as they each build their own custom armies. Controls are highly intuitive and direct in VR—players grab a unit with a Move controller and place it on the battlefield where they want to attack the opponent! For the Social Screen player using a DualShock 4 controller, the game launches player-selected units automatically when their charge time is complete. This dynamic balances the Social Screen player’s speed against the VR player’s precise aiming via the VR interface to give both players even odds.
In League of War: VR Arena, the game pace is fast, action is extreme and the fun only stops to give you a chance to catch your breath before the next battle. Regardless of whether the opponent is human or an AI hologram, the game thrives on a simple to play, difficult to master mantra. Should you wait for a powerful tank to charge, or immediately attack with an inexpensive recon unit that can distract the enemy while you prepare your big move? Should you deploy a helicopter to attack infantry, or wait to pair it with artillery for a more effective combo attack? These are the choices tabletop generals will make in League of War: VR Arena!
Developed and published by MunkyFun, League of War: VR Arena will be exclusively released for PlayStation VR on November 7th via the PlayStation Store, with a list price of $19.99.
