dance central 3 – q&a
Spokesperson: John Drake, Director of Communication and Brand Management, Harmonix Music
Q: What new features are available in “Dance Central 3?”
A: Whether you want to improve your dance skills, work up a sweat, or throw a killer dance party, “Dance Central 3″ has it all. In addition to featuring the hottest routines to everyone’s favorite songs, “Dance Central 3″ really breaks from the mold is in its new innovative gameplay modes, “Crew Throwdown,” “Party Time” and “Story.”
In “Party Time” mode players can start a simple dance party from the main menu with just one swipe, rolling them into an infinite shuffle of amazing songs and great gameplay with no menus to navigate. Alternately, dancers can gather their best dance crews and go head-to-head in a “Crew Throwdown.”
In “Crew Throwdown,” two teams of up to four players each compete against one another in a series of dance offs to prove which crew has the hottest skills. In addition to the returning “Battles” introduced in “Dance Central 2,” innovative new game modes keep the party moving. Get scored on your ability to move with the rhythm as you bust out your own freestyle routine in “Keep the Beat” or challenge your opponent to match your own, player created dance moves in “Make Your Move.”
Additionally, “Dance Central 3” features an over-the-top Story mode. In a first for the franchise, players can explore the decades of dance while engrossed in a narrative of cool characters, awesome venues and great music. Become an agent of Dance Central Intelligence, travel through time, and master crazes from throughout the ages to defeat evil genius Dr. Tan, who is hellbent on ruling the world of Dance Central!
Q: We hear this game is going to take players on a musical journey through the years. Which decades are featured in the game?
A: “Dance Central 3″ features songs, as well as tailored venues and character outfits, from five decades: the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, ’00s and ’10s.
Q: What was behind the decision to explore older songs and dance moves?
A: Harmonix pays close attention to fan feedback and dancers asked for two things: more dance crazes (actual dances you’d see out in the world, at a wedding or a party) and a more varied soundtrack. People wanted to learn how to Dougie, how to Hustle and how to do the Electric Slide!
This expanded scope lets us explore the foundational dances that have brought us to where we are today and inspired our choreographers for years. And, most importantly, the throwback, authentic crazes are balanced out by the most amazing hits of today for a soundtrack that everyone will love.
Q: The Usher partnership is very exciting. What can you tell us about his involvement in “Dance Central 3?”
A: After seeing the amazing and authentic dance experience in “Dance Central” and “Dance Central 2,” Usher was excited to be part of “Dance Central 3,” and he revealed the title with a show-stopping performance at the Xbox E3 Media Briefing this June.
“Dance Central 3″ features his latest hit “Scream” and his 2010 hit single “OMG.” Both songs feature choreography taken directly from Usher’s live shows and music videos. By playing “Dance Central 3″ fans can learn the same signature moves Usher performs on stage.
Usher is passionate about everyone’s ability to learn to dance. In “Dance Central 3,” he serves as the voice of the game’s “Rehearse” mode — hit the studio with Usher and learn moves to the 45 song soundtrack! He’ll talk you through complicated moves, and deliver encouragement and critiques as you perfect your performance.
Q: We’ve noticed that some of the moves in “Dance Central 3” have some quirky names! Who dreams these up?
A: The cue card system in “Dance Central 3″ is a great way to see what moves are next. Between the icons and the names, we try to communicate a LOT of information that’s easy to recall, but with 2,000+ moves in the game – the names have gotten wackier over time. Our choreographers, producers and designers work together to make move names that are descriptive, funny and memorable so you can keep dancing.
Q: Does “Dance Central 3” have a story mode?
A: Yes, Harmonix has crafted a fun and exciting “Story” mode that will have players traveling back through time to learn classic dance moves from past decades. Played solo or with a friend, players will join the ranks of Dance Central Intelligence (DCI) to uncover a nefarious plot to destroy Dance Central as we know it. To put a stop to the villainous machinations of Dr. Tan, players must journey through time to learn iconic dance crazes from the ’70s to today. Can you help the DCI crew master classic crazes like The Hustle, The Electric Slide and more in time to prevent the ultimate dance criminal from ending the dance party permanently?
In “Story,” players will unlock power moves, decode crazes from across the eras and travel through time to save the world…all while interacting with the great personalities and unparalleled choreography that define the Dance Central experience.
Q: Does “Dance Central 3” really make players better dancers?
A: Yes, with easy-to-follow instructions and must-have moves, “Dance Central 3″ makes it fun and easy for players of all skill levels to learn to dance. Whether creating routines on “beginner,” “easy,” “medium,” or “hard” difficulties, Harmonix choreographers focus on designing routines that will give every player the best moves on the block. In addition to the fresh original choreography in “Dance Central 3,” the DC Choreography Team spruced up classic crazes with fresh contemporary twists – dance The Hustle or the Electric Slide as you know it, and get ready for some amazing and authentic modern tweaks to these classics!
And learning these routines is easier in “Dance Central 3″ than any other dance game. In “Rehearse”, players can learn routines move by move, slow down particularly challenging sections, record video of themselves for comparison, and more. When they feel confident, they can put it all together to practice the whole routine, and take it to “Perform!” Kinect technology utilizes full body tracking to provide real-time per-limb feedback and video recording so players can see how to improve their moves.
“Dance Central 3″ also continues to expand the franchise with electrifying new gameplay that keeps the party going with the hottest, most authentic dance moves to-date. And if you have a friend who’s struggling to keep up on “Easy” in any party mode, the dynamic difficulty system of “Dance Central 3″ will seamlessly transition them to “Beginner” behind the scenes. On this easier set of moves, your friend will suddenly feel the “illusion of awesome” and really own the floor. After all, dance parties are about having fun!
Q: What’s your favorite track in “Dance Central 3” and why?
A: It’s hard to choose between the 45 awesome hits, but with custom choreography done just for the game, and with a commanding spot on the charts, Usher’s “Scream” is a truly powerful dance craze and is the top track for me!
