Here at POTW we make the tough decision of what to buy if you only had money for ONE book coming out that week… this is easily the best comic coming out any given Wednesday…deal with it.
While seeing the graphic novel release of Pat Lee’s Widow Warriors made for one tempting POTW, I’d clearly be wrong about the italic text above. Nightly News 5th anniversary hardcover clearly takes the cake for this week’s best release. If you’ve followed this column any, then you’ve seen Jonathan Hickman’s name pop up here and there. The Nightly News is the biggest reason for that.
The Nightly News is about a cult of citizens whose lives have been ruined by shoddy journalism. It’ll turn out someone was arrested for something or accused of something, and that would get news coverage. When it turns out they were innocent, and the accusations ruined their lives, the news decided to cover something more interesting. They are led be an entity only known as The Voice. It turns out one man goes undercover in attempts to infiltrate the cult and actually meets with The Voice.
Hickman writes and draws the series and litters in tons of factoids about big business. One could say the book is very anti-corporation but the bits of information he drops on each page enhances the story. Hickman’s art really meshes well with his background as a graphic designer. It looks sleek and smooth, and when it came out, no other comic looked like it. This was a trailblazing book in how intelligent the story was and how artistically unique it was from any other book on the stands.
Here we are 5 years later with a story that still holds up and boatload of extras in a beautiful hardcover presentation. This is a classic from the Image Comics Library that no collector or reader should be without.
Pat Lee should not be allowed to work on any comics till he gives back alot of money tat he owes writers and artists tat worked for him at dreamwave, While Hickman is awesome
