So we’ve come to the last part of volume one. The series started off great and has kept the momentum pretty strong, the main question is: does it wrap up well?
For the most part Lucid finishes the story arc pretty well. We finally meet Dee’s ghosty girl-friend and we find out who the big bad is. In terms of plot it ties up and leaves just enough to run with for a second volume. But unfortunately the realization of who’s summoning the pendragon kind of comes off like a bad bond film. Similarly the reasons behind the decision to harness this power are a little uninspired. These complaints aren’t enough to ruin the comic and there are some really interesting moments as the story unfolds.
Lucid has been really interesting. It’s almost a struggle to figure out whats going on some issues but in that good way. The story has been weaved really well around a universe that is solidly constructed. The art is still gorgeous. I know it probably wont be to everyones taste but I gotta say I fell in love with Wieszczyk’s style from the get go. McMillan himself is adept at telling a story. His style is almost fragmented and always full of energy.
Of all the new series to come out Lucid is up there. Unfortunately it’s slipped just a little from the first two issues and the ending in places is a bit hackneyed. But this is worth checking out, it’s an original premise with some interesting characters. As I’ve said before if you’ve read and enjoyed the other issues then you’re going to dig this one. If you haven’t then check the first one out and see how you feel.
Looking forward to volume 2!
