Independents day
On Sunday November 7th The Dublin Co-op will be hosting Ireland’s third annual Independents Day.
Independents Day is day long zine fair which celebrates & promotes D.I.Y. culture, whilst encouraging independent artists from the local community. It also serves to create awareness about ongoing local and international social movements, events & issues.
Zines are independent non-commercial, non-professional, small-circulation, do-it-yourself style magazines. There is little limitation on the subject matter and style of individual zines. They range anywhere from social commentary & music discussion to personal stories & experiences. The creators produce, publish and distribute the zines themselves. There is a long history of zine production in Ireland, beginning in 1977 with Raw Power produced by members of seminal Irish punk band the Radiators From Space.
Irish zines include Loserdom, The RAG, Baby Beef, The Devil On 45 and many others. All will be available on the day along with other zines and radical books from Britain, Europe, Canada and the USA.
Expect live music & dj’s throughout the day, as well as spoken word performances & poetry.
There will also be Screenings & workshops including a presentation by DCTV & a stop motion workshop.
As well as all this, local independent artists will have there work on display and there’ll be a range of stalls with information on various independent political and community organisations.
The Dublin Food Co-op will also have their store open, as well as the Co-op Café, serving coffee, tea and lunch. A map to The Dublin Food Co-op is available at www.independentsdaydublin.blogspot.com.
